Figured this would be a good thread to have. There are a bunch of different racks being used by members, as well as some alternative mounting options... but the information is spread all over the place (garages, home grown solutions, etc).

Thought it would be a good idea for everyone to post up their rack details along with a bunch of pictures. Good pictures showing mounting, side/front/rear view, loaded, etc.

Good idea with the unit strut to keep it low profile - did you notice a difference in drag from the standard mount on the cross bars?

Thanks it was a big diff in just noise alone. I'm pretty happy with it so far it does need a third support in the middle though do to my mesh floor.

Matt, What you can do is as people start posting there baskets put a link to that basket in the first post so people can jump right to the post they want.

Rage roof basket 62.5" x 45"

First, I had to make some new cross rails that were lower profile (so i can park in the garage at work). I used curtain alluminum rails that we use at work. Cut them to length and test fitted them..............

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2011/04/NewRails6-1.jpg

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2011/04/NewRails3-1.jpg

Then I sprayed them with undercoating/bed liner stuff and installed them in their resting area..........

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2011/04/NewRails2-1.jpg

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2011/04/NewRails1-1.jpg

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2011/04/NewRails-1.jpg

I gained 1.25"s of lower profile....with the sport bars (including the mounts) it was a total of 4"s high.......with my home-mades it came out to be 2 3/4"s high.

Then it was time for the basket......I picked this basket because of Sal's review and torture tests......Anywho, on to the pics.....

I'm not concerned with how high the cross bars make the rack sit. I dont have a garage to worry about getting in and I figure you're not gaining anything as far as mileage goes so it doesn't bother me.

Anyone want to see my rack? Here it is the well endowed Defender rack sitting nice and low on the roof from Offroad Unlimited. Beware that it seems that getting this kinda rack takes some real work. They are slow as molasses at shipping it out (assuming they even ship it). It sure looks good though don't you think?

As soon as you post some pictures in this thread. The point of this thread is to get pictures of all the different roof racks in one thread. As people post their pictures I add them to the first post with a quick link to their post in this thread.

Like Sal mentioned, it's also a good idea to post a link to your install thread as well (if you have one)

Ironically one of the reasons I started this thread was because i did so much searching during my roof basket research that I actually started getting angry when i would think i found what i was looking for, but it was just someone saying "yeah i have ___________ basket and love it", but not post pics. Made a floor from surplus stainless steel screen that came from Ice Harbor dam. It's high grade SS and was a fish screen. It's about IMPOSSIBLE to cut, and we ruined three pairs of shears. It acts like a solar blocker, so even in the Southwest, very little heat builds up inside the rig now.
https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2010/09/DSCF0187JPG-1.jpg

My XK in its current form. The rack makes a handy place for lights. I also have a backup camera mounted on it, so it looks down from 6' up. Its GREAT for backing up while off-roading. The front has a piece of 4'' ABS pipe cut lengthwise, and helps with wind flow. Before that was installed, the wind screamed like banshees above 40 MPH. The "long thing" on the passenger side is a Foxwing awning.
https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2011/08/DSCF1937JPG-1.jpg

The backup cam. The transmitter is crammed into one of the backup light housings.
https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2011/09/DSCF0929JPG-1.jpg

The GPS screen switches to the backup while in reverse. The markers are great while backing up off-road. The end of the yellow zone just has to be kept in the center of the dirt tire tracks, and I can go backwards at 15 MPH with no worries. The photo shows backing up at night. The two floodlights make it easy to see where I'm going.

I've always loved the look of the AEV desinged WK. I stole their idea for front tow hooks and now I want their roof rack. Anyone know anything about it? Was it a one-off? If so, someone should make a similar one. It appears to be one piece and not a seconday add-on to the existing rack.

I finally got my Rage rack up this weekend. Since I have the sport utility bars I had to go with the u-bolts like Sal originally had. Once I have time it will be coming off again so I can bed line it and the hardware. The hardware is obviously silver and the rack looked like it came used because there were paint chips missing in a couple areas. So to avoid rusting the entire thing will get the bed liner treatment.

I've redone mine in the front end. Gone is the halogens and chopped-in-half lengthwise 4" ABS (Wind break) and replaced with a 40 inch LED bar. It's high noon out front at midnight with that thing on!!

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2013/06/IMG_4227-1.jpg

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2013/06/IMG_4223-1.jpg

And, new camera setup in the back. I can now see the very edge of the rear winch, so I can edge right up to within 1" of something behind me. :)
https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2013/06/20130216_143312-1.jpg

The new look, as I added a 30 inch LED bar to replace the round HID's that were on the front bumper. There's something like 40,000 lumens blasting forward now. I can see the tops of trees and telephone poles as well as 3,000 feet of what's ahead. That's my buddy Mike leaning on the Jeep during one of our outings. The long green thing is a Foxwing awning.

Mine's a Totron from eBay, such as this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/321089814204?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

Cool that was one I was looking at. How do you like it? The other one I was considering was the 42" Tough-Light... but that's still pretty pricey, however I think Jon is a vendor IIRC.

Turned out looking good ! I'll have to try that stuff sometime myself, didn't know what all it could be used on.

The long green thing is a Foxwing awning.

I have heard good things about those portable shade Foxwings.

Hopefully in a month or two I will be able to help contribute to this thread.

Add me to the Rola/Unistrut list.

I used deep channel unistrut...a 10ft piece cut in half. My mounts are the unistrut channel mounts in the stock "gutters" with a hex screw and washers. The spacer is simply a threaded coupler measuring 1.5". What I like about the set up is that the tension on the mounts to the roof rails is separate from the tension on the basket. I've had it all installed for 5 days now and no wobbles/looseness at all. I bought the Rola and the extension. I really like how it all looks put together. 2163

I'll snap a few more pics this weekend (the time change killed my available daylight!). All in, the unistrut rails/mounts cost me ~$50. More to come, I promise! :)

OK.. OK… After over 1 and ½ years I did FINALLY get to install my Defender Roof rack.

For my more detailed installation information and photos > http://www.theultimatejeep.com/showthread.php?2503-Defender-Roof-Rack-and-Lights-(FINALLY)-Installed&p=46086&viewfull=1#post46086

I’ve been super busy but after Matt’s request for me to post mine, I decided to take my camera and take a short detour on the way to get my wife some milk! I need to take detours like this more often! Lol. So please excuse all the photos I posted but it was a long wait to finally get it mounted!

I am also very happy with the Rigid scene and driving lights! They are also used with a flasher to augment my other rack and vehicle mounted emergency lights.

With the horrible experience I had trying to get this rack, I did end up having a “Happy Ending” of sorts to my story thanks to an unexpected Great customer service experience from Rigid Industries Led Lighting.

If you notice in my installation photos >linked above< all I could afford was the “SR” or single row front 40” driving light and still have enough left over to get lights for 360 deg coverage.

Well after my very long and ridiculous rough time I had before and then after the rack arrived ( see> http://www.theultimatejeep.com/showthread.php?2503-Defender-Roof-Rack-and-Lights-(FINALLY)-Installed&p=46086&viewfull=1#post46086 ) I thought it was going to start all over again!

After installing the lights, adjusting them and soon at a major fire they all worked great. But… yes another But… (I was starting to think I was incurably jinxed on this whole rack/light mod!) …the 40” SR front driving light had developed an intermittent problem with one section of the light.ie… it would not always come on!
Sometimes it would go out then come on again without any reason. Wow.. all this time, money and work and it is still not over!

Now I’m very nervous about contacting Rigid as I have had their lights for going on two years now but only been able to use them a few times in the last month. With all the rotten luck I have had to this point I just knew I was screXXd again!

I sent Rigid an E-mail explaining my situation and crossed my fingers. I was very surprised to hear back from them in less than 30 minutes assuring me that they have a Life Time Warranty and not to worry they would make it right! Wow.. was I dreaming ??

With a few more pleasant phone and e-mail communications with Rigid Industries, they were not just able to expeditiously replace my Single 40” light, but they went out of their way to help work with me, to be able to upgrade to their E series (dual) 40” light!

It has already worked great at a couple of emergency and community events!!!

So sorry for going on so long.. but for those of you who have followed this frustrating story, I just wanted you to let you know that even though it looked like the story would never end, something small but good did come out of it! And a big thanks to Rigid ! There are some good companies out there after all !!

Damn Ron i do love that Defender rack!

Yup... I have always been partial to this rack after first seeing Gulf550's over 2 1/2 years ago. I hope I was able to work all the bugs out for anyone that may now want to order one! It took me over a year and a half but I'm dedicated to my fellow Jeep owners, and someone had to stick it out to the end! Lol..

Oh here is the first photo I saw of the Defender Rack on Gulf550's XK.

I like the fact the sides go out far and over the roof rails. I wish it were a foot longer, but it looks good as-is. It gives a nice chunk of useable real estate up there.

I would have considered one if they made it a foot longer also. I have mine mounted as far forward as it would go for both the lights sake and to try and not to cover the satellite antenna. My rear homemade mount for the combo parking, turn and stop lights just barely comes up to its edge now. I was hoping that I wouldn't have to find the time to do another project and try to relocate the antenna if I didn't have to. I hadn't considered my sat antenna when I was first started looking at racks.

I think I remember Adondo writing something about buying a SiriusXM antenna that just plugged in to the box under the second row, so all he did was run it up over the passenger door.

The best part about the bolt together rack is that you can buy an extra center section to make the rack longer, although at 200$, its probly just cheaper to weld your own center section and bolt it in to extend the length.

My main reason for getting this rack, besides the great deal Superacer gave me, was the fact that it is just as wide if not wider than the roof trusses that hold the mounts. It allows me to fit two kayaks side by side without them hangin' off each side haha.

You took the words right off my keyboard!

It would make it ideal to add 6 to 12"s (when I get home the next time I'll take a photo with a ruler on the back of the rack) to the rack . Perhaps two 6" bars added on both sides of the center section to minimize the spacing between the cross bars, if you didn't want to add more of them also?

That with relocating or as Lekmedn mentioned about Adondo's mod of just installing a separate antenna would be perfect. (Adondo's Great Sirius Satellite thread mod fyi > http://www.jeepcommander.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10079&highlight=Adondo+Sirius+Satellite+Radio+Antenna+Re location )
