This is my WK Build Thread, 'The Core'.

Although I am on multiple forums, this forum and thread serves as the 'home-base' for my build thread. This means all of my mods and updates are typically covered in greater detail here than other locations that I may frequent.

Many thanks to these guys: Lifted_Up, cricket, xOakley, Sal-XK, and Omelet. As a 3.7L WK, I drew most of my confidence from the momentum generated by WSPJeep - your WK will be remembered, dude.

My WK today

Bought my 06 WK in 2009. I have VERY few surviving pics of this thing stock i mean bare bones stock. After a couple hours of owning it. I had the same Jeep dealership install a sunroof in it (for free).. (they were nice people)... Majority of the things I did for the first year were all interior

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2011/08/earlyjeep200901-1.jpg

After this picture I took the Jeep to get an after-market sunroof installed.

When I returned I got the Yakima bike racks and cross bars, and wind deflector installed up top

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2011/08/jeep200902-1.jpg

Then a couple weeks later I had the Nav system installed. Which allows me to integrate my IPOD with the Nav system, it has some basic voice command system, and bluetooth capability. It's also got Sirius radio membership (which I still think is a waste of my 12 bucks every month). And i installed a back up camera on it as well which is also hooked up with the NAV.

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2011/08/nav-1.jpg
https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2011/08/camera2-1.jpg
(I'll get placement of IPOD later)

Slapped on the wind deflectors on the driver and passenger side windows, and tossed in some slush mats, and threw the carpet ones in the cargo area... Just some easy cosmetic stuff. I also put in after-market headlights that I am still thinking of putting back in the OEM.
https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2011/08/windvisors-1.jpg

Then me and a good friend of mine decided it would be cool to slap on some nerfbars, which it did look good, and some splash guards. I have some pics. But I have removed them both now.

Cont'd

Then I didn't touch the Jeep at all during much of the summer of 2010. Work kept me pretty busy. Ironically, during grad school, I managed to find time to install the greatest investment this Jeep has seen thus far - my OME suspension kit (thank you Kolak for your business). It took a few days, because it was not exactly a cake walk by any means but it was fun.

Get'n it done

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2011/08/frontome-1.jpg
https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2011/08/rearome-1.jpg

Then we put on 255/75/17 Good Year Wrangler Silent Armors. There was a little rubbing so i installed 1/4'' spacers to separate it from the ball joint. Even with the 1/4'' spacers, you can tell it's STILL pretty close. But in my future upgrades you'll notice I listed MOAB's for better offset.

Update:

Since I have Yakima cross bars, and bike racks... I decided to keep it all in the same family and got the racks as well. It's strong, but not quite the quality grade as Rola but.. but it's still a good rack... These two pics are without the spacers

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2011/08/DSC02658-1.jpg

Spacers are also in...Much to my surprise it rides a little different, and the ride quality is improved a lot more with the wider stance. It looks absolutely fantastic, but I'd love to get your feedback on it

I think I have a couple pics of the rear view of this vehicle... You can immediately tell the difference. It looks great, and it rides a little more stable. I also happen to have my other Jeep in the vid as well.

I completely forgot to upload placement of my CBRadio and Antenna. I didn't want a large whip antenna twirling all over the place, and they just don't look right on a more modern Jeep. They are O.K. on trucks... I thought this was more appropriate appearance wise.

Wanted to remove the air damn, but it would look funny with the bull-bar so both were removed. I like this simplistic look better although 4xguard front will be ordered here in a month.
https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2011/08/DSC02783-1.jpg

Here is what was done to run the wiring without drilling any holes... There's a few ways you can wire it. If you pull off the rubber lip you can see that you fit some wire between the interior vinyl, and the metal itself. You can then run the wire towards the battery. Here are a few pics without tearing up too much, lol.

Very nice bro very nice indeed.

Ty, even though, this is probably as far along as the WK will get... except for some larger meats next year. Efforts will be focused on the ZJ - Untill it is as feasible to mod a WK as dirt-cheap as a ZJ

great pic's. with the short annt. How is it working out for you?
It works well - there are some people who make can make me out just fine and vice versa. But, there are some who can't hear me, or I can't hear them at all - And I'm not entirely sure why. It has worked well on the trail and at the beach for the most part - It acts weird in urban areas.

Lots of really nice WK photos there.

Thanks, Knapp - She's come a ways - lol.

I haven't purchased it yet - I should have it as early as next Friday is what I'm thinking. But it will definitely be Black, probably limited with the 5.2 or the 5.8 engine. I've seen quite a few around me within a 2hr radius of me.

Actually... CNC4X4 is doing a URE tail maintenance day next weekend on the 20th - wheeling in the afternoon. If I have my ZJ by then, I was honestly thinking about going - Probably apply for membership to the club if everything goes well (They seem like nice folks). Randal has been pretty cool.

CNC4X4 is basically my last attempt to find a club in North Carolina that isn't full of people with their heads up there... :)

Dude we already tried at URE once, those lights are clearly tougher than they appear! It'll take a few more slams on Daniel trail to break em' off.

How did you do the wheels Graphite? Can you do this yourself?

Yeah I cleaned them thoroughly, dried them off, sanded them down with 400 grit yellow sand blocks from Autozone, rinsed and dried them off sprayed 2 coats of primer with 15 minutes between each layer. Then I sprayed 3 coats of graphite with 15-30 minutes between each layer. Then I layered on 2 coats of clear with 15 minutes between those two. I allowed them to dry for 24 hours before I mounted them back on the Jeep - and then allowed another couple days to cure before I drove it.

Nice pics.....we have a mountain biking thread here somewhere. So take pics/vids on your trail ride and post them up.

I will have to find it, but I am BIG on mountain biking. Ask sal. The day i sold the XJ, I was soaking in wet mountain biking in the middle of a thunderstorm.

Yeah - Which is frightening. I hope they won't be hard to take off, because they have been pretty beastly on the trail, I have landed on those lights, and slid off them on numerous occasions.

The WK is looking good A.J.!

AJeepZJ
11-27-2011, 01:36 PM
Do it! - The letters all together cost me 9 bucks - the graphite pain I already had left over from my wheels. Painting them took me about 1.5 hrs - the I let them dry for an hour. Even though they still hadn't cured - I just tossed them up. it's about 1.25" spacing between the letters.

I installed a Warrior Pre Runner Universal Grill Guard today - It is not the 4xG grill guard. I like this one a little more because it extends forward some. Gives a little more protection for the lights and the grill itself. I'm going to have some steel brackets cut to provide additional mounting support for this bar - It's made out of 1 1/2" round steel tubing - it's very strong.

Thank you, I can't wait to get my RG2 installed. I'm tired of looking at it in my living room. All it does is remind me I lacked the hardware to do it myself, lol.

Yeah - A chain and master lock, lol. You know how people are in Eastern NC - People will take anything, even if it's worthless, lol. I came to my Jeep one day took off, and noticed my cargo rack was sliding around. Seemed like someone tried to take the cargo rack, but lacked the ability to execute it. To their credit, the Yakima's have a built in theft deterent.. it basically takes FOREVER to take off and it is quite cumbersome... So I imagine they gave up doesn't help that there is a 33lb tire on top.

But yeah, a chain that is cut resistant and an outdoor masterlock that would even take Sal an hour or two before cracking it open, lol.

LOL!

But seriously, the people in NC don't play around about stealing stuff. I left my rear shackle on my XK by accident. As I walked up to get in my Jeep I saw someone pulling at the pin to receiver. I yelled, "What the hell man!" and he bolted.

AJeepZJ
12-12-2011, 12:03 PM
Wasn't there a discussion a while back about whether you should leave your Shackles on or off? The average person doesn't know how they come off, and at first glance it look impossible to remove... but an offroader, or a clever thief KNOWS they are worth 15 bucks a piece. I have been leaving mine on since the day I got them - But I will probably start taking them off... NOTHING pisses me off more than someone stealing.

Matt
12-12-2011, 12:51 PM
I tighten my shackles up with plyers so you can't just turn them off by hand. Wont stop a good thief who's equipped with basic tools.... but it'll stop the grab&run types.

That doesn't work around these parts! Everyone and their mother carries tools in their POS car or on them. If you can easily get to the mounting bolts/screws, someone will steal it! That is why I keep all my gear in the back or custom mount it so you can't get at the bolts. :D

Added some more auxiliary lighting for the WK today. They were all installed to my cargo rack. 2 Halogen sets total. One 55w set for the reverse. One set for the sides. I will make an attempt at wiring some of this stuff tomorrow. Eventually, I want to wire them such that when I hit the unlock button on my key - the reverse and side lights come on just as the headlights and follow the same time delay before cutting off, or shutt off when the vehicle is turned on. I'll get some pics in the morning I'm still tired, lol.

Nothing crazy - Pics below

D-ring Isolaters equipped up front - Also removed my aftermarket headlight assembly's and put int he OEM.
https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2012/01/myisos-1.jpg

Remember those reverse lights I used to use that seemed to act as really good sliders? lol. Well I had to remove those to install my 4xG RG2. I bought some new ones and installed those on the cargo rack. Wires are all nice and protected and tied fastened to the frame out of the way of damage from whatever I put on top.

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2012/01/wiring-1.jpg

I like Sal's lights he had on the side, and could see the practicality of this - So I equiped some on the side as well.
https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2012/01/sidelights-1.jpg

This concludes my holiday project.

My next project sometime this week or early next week is to finally order some SA sliders and 4xG Belly, and Front Suspension Skid

Did you heat shrink the connections?
Did you use a relay?
What type of amps can your switch handle?

I dunno the brightness of the lights. I didn't use heat-shrink, because that's not the type of connectors i used, but I wish I had. I had to use some type of clamp and pinch. I did use relays, I dunno what type of amps my switches can handle, and I used 14 or 16 gauge wiring. But i'm going to have to redo the side and rear and put them on seperate switches because I don't feel they are bright enough, or i'm going to have to go to a 12 gauge wire.

Sal-XK

The wire should be big enough for the lights. It's either the lights aren't powerfull enough or you used the wrong relays.

Next was the Belly Guard - A big PITA to do by yourself

Slapped these two together, I probably should have tightened them just a little more than what I did because now I have to craw back under tomorrow, take it off, and retighten the two skids together a little better. I thought they'd be a little more accessible after actually putting them on - this turns out not to be the case (in my experience).
https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2012/01/DSC03989-1.jpg

Using my body as a means to balance this thing along the belly so I can put these on. I've actually become quite good at this now.
https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2012/01/DSC03990-1.jpg

Front Suspension Last

Removed the lower swaybar mounting bolt (passenger and driver side) and the cooler line assembly (just driver side)
https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2012/01/DSC03995-1.jpg

Installed driver and passenger side brackets. (Passenger side bracket has the little tab (that I ended up NOT using).
https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2012/01/DSC03997-1.jpg
https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2012/01/DSC03998-1.jpg

Finally slapped that baby on. (again using my body as leverage to balance the skid - meanwhile I accumulated several scars in the process. But I won't share pics of that)

I was trying to use a second jack I had to compress the shock into the slot - but I kept getting contact with the chassis which didn't help. After Sal laughed at me enough, I finally decided to try his method. It took me all but 5 minutes to get the passenger side in. Driver side took slightly longer due to the fuel tank, but I did some funny stuff to get that one in.

I measured 20.7" in the rear with all the skids, and my cargo full of crap pic below

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2012/01/DSC04048-1.jpg

The ride is a little more firm in the rear - I love it. Cornering is a little better for me as well. Rear measured to be 22.5" from center cap to fender well... VERY pleased with this. Anyone comparing my previous pic's to this will clearly see there is additional room there in the wheel well area. Total yield from these shocks was 1.8" (with all the crap in my cargo).

I noticed after my first drive with the new shocks a 'clunking' which I kinda knew what it would be but I wanted to see what it would do. I don't know if the XK's have this problem. But some of the wheel well plastic gets awfully close to the shocks. Anyway, anytime I went down a dip, where the shocks have to respond quickly - The plastic would actually have noticeable contact with the coilovers. So I had to trim this down. I ran out of Daylight to tighty this one up, but I'll get to it tomorrow... Oh I will!

The Issue:
As you can clearly tell, plastic is too close. And yes, I can see that rubber boot slowly making it's way down the shock - I'll have to consult Sal with that one - because I'm not pulling that side shock off, lol. Was a PITA
https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2012/01/20120120_170228_834-1.jpg

Solution!
Dremmel Tool, extension cord, power inverter

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2012/01/20120120_170244_524-1.jpg

A minor set back:
So I've removed the majority of what I need but have not actually removed the piece yet. Well I let my hand down briefly, and tap the disk on the tire and it snaps in half. I kinda laughed because stuff like this happens to me all the time.
https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2012/01/20120120_172518_853-1.jpg

When are you getting one???

Dan ordered one, so I'm sure he can report to you his findings when he installs it as well. I already went over the specifications I adapted for my vehicle with him. It would be really nice if this thing could program up to 3 different specifications that way I could just plug the daggone thing in, press a button and it adapt all the specs i previously set. I was waiting to get the vivid but didn't realize it was going to be almost $600 :( I also don't have any android based phones to just get the app which should be a bunch cheaper. So if I ever end up with a android based tablet I'll sell this one and get the vivid app if Jon rights a good review of it. :)

By Request.

Pro's and Con's of the Hypertech Max Energy Programmer for owners of the 3.7L Engine

Con's
1. Interface is kinda cheap - it has a digital analog display, This is my primary dislike about this thing, but I don't have to look at it every day.
2. Lacks ability to store multiple specs (some specs are more conducive for various environments ie; offroading vs highway driving).
3. Process is admittedly a little slow - (but this is mostly a personal problem)
4. Cannot manipulate Shift Points (The next version should definitely include this for 3.7's... hint hint Hypertech.)

Pro's.
1. Functional, Practical, Effective (Does what it says it will do ie: more hp, more torque, better mpg's)
2. Great Initiative (currently the only viable tuner for 3.7's to my knowledge)
3. Straight Forward Install (instructions were more than sufficient for install, which included updating software, before updating my programmer before reprogramming the Jeep ).
4. Price is appropriate (for the most part)
5. Customer Service (this is BIG for me, when I cannot contact you or you don't respond to my e-mail in 24hrs. I tend to get really pissed off!)

Suggestions for Hypertech
This is the only real viable programmer available for the 3.7's. Having said that, I kinda feel like I'm cornered into a position where I HAVE to test it, lol. While I'm sure it has undergone various testing and perfecting - I still feel it is a product that can only get better for us - So please don't stop Hypertech, continue to develop this program. Most will pay $400+ for this programmer, when you open it and take a look at it, it probably won't feel like there's 400 dollars in your hand, which is a little saddening - BUT, once you plug it into your jeep, program everything, and it says success - you squint your eyes, look in the opposite direction that your eyes are looking, crank the jeep and take it for a ride. You relax on the price after a bit - (but you always keep it in the back of your head). I think this is something that Hypertech should continue to keep the ball rolling on. A faster programmer, with more options (memory storing abilities, shift point modifications, touch screen or more up-to-date interface display.) Overall I would probably give this product a 'B to a B+'

Question on your MPG display: Were you using your cruise control while on the expressway and did you clear the MPG? If not, what type of driving conditions were you in while getting those numbers?

I cleared it after a start from a red light. I was not in cruise. Expressway was entirely flat. Road was of average condition.

So, it cost $400 ? Now, is the payoff worth the $400 spent ? I know over a period of time the mpg gained will make up the difference but we all like to see immediate results when we buy a product or do a mod. Is there that immediate feedback and reaction that lets you know that this is $400 well spent ? I would like something to bring back what the larger tires took away , at the least.

Sal-XK
02-10-2012, 03:29 PM
I think if you do a cost per HP gained you would find it well with in the norm on that. Then add the benifit of the MPG's gained and the trans operating correctly with the adjusted tire size it sounds like it would be worth it.

NeilSmith
02-10-2012, 03:44 PM
Yeah, Ive just read that the hp gain is in the upper rpm range , higher than we normally run our Jeeps. Same with the torque. Whats the point of having more power at 5.5K rpm when you need it from 0 thru 3.5K ?

ya you guys with QT1 need the lower HP gain for sure but it should be a curve peaking at 18HP which means you should have some HP gains at the lower RPM's just not 18 of them.

AJeepZJ

As stated, the more impressive HP gain is in the upper RPM ranges yes - this is actually true for many performance products . But there is still asustained 5-15 on the majority of the curve. As Sal stated... The tire size adjustment, rev limits make it worth while, but also fan temp change is very useful. The ability to cut that fan on while wheeling at Uwharrie would probably have prevented my "Trans Over Temp" warnings especially since my fan refused to come on at all, lol. Now, with this programmer, I can have this fan set at 185, and have it cut on at 195f.. or 200f... keeping my engine and tranny cool while I wheel, this is extremely beneficial for the 3.7s without the 4LO and/or Factory Tow Package - it is definitely worth the buck when you consider the fact that most CAI's get you the 5-10 in the same higher RPM ranges and they cost 3/4's the cost of this programmer and don't offer half the perks - And we haven't even touched the potential ill effects of CAI...

When you put it simply... Would I rather have a Programmer for 400, or a CAI for 325.... You better take the programmer.

NeilSmith
02-10-2012, 04:08 PM
Yeah, I definitely never wanted to spend the $325 for an intake, just done think what you get is worth it. I do like the speedo calibration and especially being able to tune the tranny for oversized tires. MPG gain would be icing on the cake ! You know, I think every V6 Ive been out on the trails with has had the "tranny temp" light come on, except for myself, knock on wood.

Air Ram Power Wire finally came in. Very excited. I was telling Sal, I didn't drive the WK all weekend, Most of the mods I did to it I completely forgot. So when I popped in my power wire and took it for a drive, I can really start to feel the cumulative effect of the programmer, power wire, and exhaust. Feel's pretty good. Pics below.

I love toys that come in the mail in white or brown boxes.. But I Prefer the brown boxes (they're bigger)

"The POWER WIRE alters the Air Temp Signal to your PCM to read 20 degrees cooler at all times. So if the actual intake air temps are 90 degrees then the POWER WIRE alters the signal to read 70 degrees. This causes the PCM to advance the timing which is worth approximately 8-10RWHP."

I eventually just ditched the instructions all together, and looked at the pictures, because the written explanations were GARBAGE... It was outside when I first heard it. I started the Jeep and went to check on everything and heard the hiss. Went to grab some groceries, started the jeep again, went to check on it.. Hiss wasn't as loud. And when I got to the parking lot to check a final time, the hiss did not SEEM to be there. Whether it is or not no longer matters to me because I can't hear it while standing at the hood.

The instructions were terrible. I should have told you to put the heat shield together the night before. That thing was a pain in the butt and took the longest of the whole install. Don't worry about the extra hardware, I had some too.

I get the sucking/hissing sound for a couple seconds on start up, especially when it's cold outside, but it eventually goes away.

Nice to know... I ordered the Drycharger that you and Chris recommended. Should be here tomorrow, and I will slap that on. I saw your review for it on Amazon. You'll feel torque, but you typically won't 'feel' horsepower. Though I guess you could 'hear' it, lol. My kit shipped in today, so i wasted no time doing anything the night before. What actually took me the most time was the upper mounting bracket for the OEM construction of the intake. I had no tools that would actually screw it out.. .my hand-held screws were basically pivoting around the screw... I ended up BREAKING the intake out of my engine bay... and hammering and straightening that tab out. It looks clean and professional. The heat shield took a little bit of time to do, but It wasn't TOO bad... But yeah.. the instructions need help... I don't see them fixing them any time soon since it looks like K&N discontinued this product???

In any case, I can feel the lower RPM pull from the engine, especially around 3000rpm's just around shifts. I'm not sure if this is consistent with your experience. In all seriousness... no BS.... I'm not sure if I would have felt any one of these performance mods individually. But, together, they certainly have an impact on performance - and that was my goal to handle these 285's.

I want to go ahead and change my oil and filter out before I take off this weekend. I wanna use a K&N HP Oil Filter... Saw a youtube video of the 3.7L... I want to know what filter do i use, I saw in the Video he used the K&N HP 2009? What is the significance of the number, if any, and you guys all use 5W20, I tended to stick with Penzoil for my XJ. Any other brand I should use. Up untill this now - I've had all my fluids changed on the WK with the extended warranty.

criket
02-22-2012, 10:08 AM
As long as it's the same number (5w-20), it shouldn't matter what brand (once you go synthetic in the motor, stick with synthetic though). The brand is more of a personal preference.

I use Valvoline 5w-20 Synthetic without a problem. But the brand is up to you.

pjmjr508

I'm more partial to M1 full Syn. Alot of people I know that take care of their rides use either M1 or Royal Purple and been very happy.

Just like Criket stated its a personal pref on what brand to use, but stick with 5/20

Well... I know we usually do 5w20, but I went ahead with 5w30, Royal Purple and a K&N Filter, mainly because the warm days are just around the corner. So I'm going to try it out. I drove it for about an hour to get the oil nice and warm and get it to settle in. Mileage is up some, enjoyed that! I got the K&N Filter just because I felt I needed a performance filter given that I have the cai. Here are some frustrating pictures below.

Going to get the clear with the 10mm white LEDs. Ill power them with a relay actuated by my reverse lights and I'm going to throw another circuit in there so I can also power then via a switch.

One month till my birthday.... LED lights in the bumper will be on in one month + 2 days lol

So your birthday is on 3/29? If so, that's my birthday too, LOL.

I also have been looking at these lights, hmmmmm.......

I was expecting to clean, port and polish my throttle body but ran into a snag, so I just cleaned it. But i'm really disappointed, lol - it was not even HALF as dirty as I was expecting it to be. Pics below.

After

And back to the snag. So, one of the cables is fairly easy to remove, but I'm trying to figure out how to remove the other cable. The one that is closest to the TB itself. I didn't want to keep tugging until something broke. So, I just cleaned it up as best as possible, and tossed everything back in.

criket
03-07-2012, 07:03 PM
I guess the reason it isn't as dirty is because we don't have the oil blow back that the Hemi's do. Are you planning to install a bigger TB?

AJeepZJ
03-07-2012, 07:11 PM
Im going to port this one out myself. Was going to do it today, but will wrap it up tomorrow. I ran into trouble getting one of the cables off and ran out of time.

Here are some pics from this morning. A buddy of mine needed some photo shots for class, and I needed some new photo shots anyway! And I can never turn down an opportunity for someone to take pics of my jeep.

Ended up using my camera because his was catching too much of the fog (his was a lot more expensive than mine).

lekmedm
03-23-2012, 10:33 AM
Oh, good God, I don't remember. I think I got them from http://www.superbrightleds.com/ but am not sure now. There is a seller on eBay that has better prices and clear lamps that light up red, which, I think, would look great on your white rig. They are randpcarriages. Here (http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-6-RED-Super-LED-Stop-Turn-Tail-Lights-CLEAR-Lens-/290639060018?pt=Motors_RV_Trailer_Camper_Parts_Acc essories&vxp=mtr&hash=item43ab701c32) are the lights I am referring to, and for $30 you can have a set with grommets and harness! Not bad!

AJeepZJ
03-23-2012, 10:45 AM
There's only one way to install it, and that is to make sure that the two lips of the grommet fit between the bumper. At which point, once you push the actual light fixture into the grommet, you can hear it 'lock' into place. This install just seems to bias flushing the light assembly with the grommet as opposed to the bumper as is the case with yours.

AJ, do you pull a trailer with your jeep?

What do ya pull, a goose neck trailer???

Unless the hitch part of the trailer is sky high, the back end of the trailer must sit very close to the ground going down the road.
