Removed all the leaves, pieces of tree, and debris off the WK, and put a new air filter in her a couple days ago. The old filter was the same filter that was in there when I went to Uwharrie (twice) and Maryland. So lots of wheeling was on that filter, lol.

Did a little tailgating this weekend with some buddies. My WK served as the vehicle of choice. (for it's obvious sexiness).

I don't know how, but I managed to get 6 people inside of it. There are are 18 folks there. Several outside the camera, and 2 of them are sitting in my cargo space.

I installed my JBA strut spacers in the front to level the front out with the back. Also installed my chrome turn signal bulbs. I'm pretty happy with both.

Replaced Front Driveshaft, and then booked it in to the stealership for all new front diff isolation bushes, apparently they are meant to have rubber in there??

I need to do mine. I need to call and ask how much. Im sure they are no good. Were you able to see them from underneath?

valpacer
09-25-2011, 08:31 PM
Yeah with all the plates off you can see them. Little mirror Helps. Unfortunately only 1 i think is a bolt on, the others are press in, so its a diff out scenario.

Budasac

I need to do my diff bushings as well. From what I understand you can do them without pulling the diff out. Just removing the driveshaft and letting the diff hang. When I finally do it I'll report back.

In keeping with the thread: I threw a Rola Rack on today that I picked up used.

No, it's not mounted to the tow hook points but, you can't have the bull bar and the tow hooks. And with the hardware that it came with it hung way low (slightly below the plastic air dam.) I had to cut most of the old mounting brackets off to get it where it is now. But as soon as I can get my hands on some .25" steel I plan on making a front receiver similar to the 4xGuard model with mounting points for the bull bar that will raise it up a little more and allow me to remove that little skid to expose a shackle in the receiver for recovery.

I gotcha. Thats what I really want is the Matrix base with the top hoop, but can't swing the $500 price tag right now.

Yea man thanks for the great find!!!

I know Sal used some extra washers when he installed his. The XK must be diffferent form the WK because there was no way in hell I was getting all the orginal washers back in there much less add 3 more.

Matt
10-23-2011, 06:38 AM
If you installed the OEM replacement shocks, you don't use extra washers. Those are just for the F150 version which are longer than the OEM shocks; the washers are because the F150 top mount is different than our WK/XKs so we need to use washer to account for the extra width.

I like how the lights came out. how hard was it to mount them in there?

ItsMeKO3
10-30-2011, 08:34 PM
Not hard at all. Picked up some angle iron and hardware from Lowes. Cut it down to the the size I wanted, drilled a few holes and mounted it to the radiator support bar. Then I mounted the lights to that.

sean112280
10-30-2011, 08:35 PM

ItsMeKO3

I didn't get any great pics of just the mounts but I've got a couple from the other day when I was tinting the lights that show how they're mounted.

https://theultimatejeep.com/notfound.png
https://theultimatejeep.com/notfound.png

The angle brackets were actually one 4 foot piece with pre-drilled holes. I cut them down to that size and bolted them onto the support. Then bolted the lights onto the bracket.

Went out and test drove one today, a 2008 SRT8. There's something wickedly fun about a vehicle that size that can launch itself forward so quickly and so effortlessly. It's just not right, in a evilly sick awesome sort of way  However, the loos of the third row and more importantly the loss of the off road capability removes this from acceptable replacement list for the Commander. Maybe when the wife's Audi needs replaced. I had her drive the SRT as well and I'm sure a seed has been planted in the back of her mind. :)

Hmmm Now that I think of it I need to replace the Wife's G35x, haven't driven a SRT Jeep, I think I will have to try it out now. I have driven the Trailblazer SS, is it anything like that?

XK N00b
11-14-2011, 03:36 PM
I haven't driven the Trailblazer. The SRT Cherokee has the bucket seats that wrap around your sides just slightly more than your buckets in the xk, not enough to make it uncomfortable or awkward, but enough to make you feel secure in them. The ride is a little lower than your stock xk/wk would be and it has sport suspension, so it's a bit stiffer and rougher than a 4wd model, though not enough to deter a purchase. It drove very tame when I was reserved with it, it would work as a daily driver. The thrill though when you open up that 6.1L Hemi, it FORCES you to giggle like a little kid. The exhaust is nice and quiet when driven like a normal car just enough rumble that you know it's there and not be a distraction though when you get WFO, it resonates through the cab with authority. I really liked the SRT but I'm an off road kinda guy so my search for a commander continues but I will be pressuring the wife into an SRT when her Audi is due to be replaced :) Her former father-in-law has a 03 Roush Racing Edition F-150 Stepside, it's probably hanging around the same rung as a Lightning and I would put the SRT Jeep a notch above the Roush. The interior finish was even with what you'd find in a limited, with SRT logos stiched into the seat backs and on the gauges, tastefully done up.

favorite part about the SRT is jsut cruising the highway at 60 mph, and bam your going 130. Corners like a car half its size and sounds mean as hell. I could never dd one, wayyyyy to many speeding tickets.

pjmjr508
11-14-2011, 04:12 PM
I have an Overland XK so I am guessing that the SRT would have the same appointments that the Overland package, so I am good with.
Its good to hear that it is lower than the XK when stock, that's one of the biggest issues my wife has with mine, to tall.
Just did a search & there is only one that is within 100 miles from my place for 33k on an 07 with 33k miles. Will have to look, but 33k is little over the top for me for a 4 yro car; might have to look at the S8's or 535xi.

If you drove and enjoyed the SS, then you WILL enjoy the SRT8. It's simply better. SS has a sorry 4-speed tranny. It's awful, it's slower, and it really doesn't look all that impressive. The SRT8 is faster, 5 speed tranny makes is smoother, interior is better, looks and sounds like a power house and ranks among the worlds fastest SUV's (among BMW and Mercedes).

Didn't do to much extra for WK... I really just started loading weight back into it. My tools, tow straps, jumper cables, cargo straps, fuel tank.. everything - but I did do some tampering with the ZJ today. I re-installed the front sway bar, in preparation for replacing the ball-joints on the sway bar links, also did some tuning in the engine, cleaned the brakes and rotors, and also did a little bit more trimming as I had some rubbing at full lock on driver side. This will improve the ride quality for whomever may buy it. It occurred to me today as I parked next to my ZJ (as I ALWAYS do with my Jeeps) that I would really miss my ZJ more than my XJ if it sells. I guess because I single-handedly chose my ZJ. Of all the choices I could have gone with - I chose this one. Although i could USE the extra pocket change but no longer NEED to sell it, my vision has kind of changed for my two Jeeps - I've decided It that if it is not sold by Christmas I will just hold onto it. It will serve as my secondary/backup DD and tow rig. I'm focusing all of my investment power back into the WK. Nothing dazzles people like my WK does around these parts, lol.

4xG Front Matrix... Complete. It actually wasn't that complicated at all - I found the instructions to be satisfactory. A few clarifications could be done in one spot but otherwise - It only took me 1.5 hours to do - What took me the most time was running back and fourth finding out that I didn't have all the hardware because I didn't have factory tow hooks - That was a bit pain. Oh and East Carolina Jeep is awful. (they know absolutely nothing). I started a pretty detailed and intricate write up but by the time I got halfway I realized how easy it was to actually install - the first 3 steps wasn't bad at all.

Nice AJ! You should paint the center Khaki like I did to match. It makes it look like it belongs a little more.

So are you ever going to swap out those headlamps? :D

AJeepZJ
12-10-2011, 05:00 AM
Yeah, I wanted to swap the headlights while I was putting on the matrix but my oem's were all the way up stairs roughly 400 meters up hill then takran rlrvator and then dig them from under my bed.... I will have to take the matrix off yo put them back on.... Only thing ill probably do is disconnect my halo's and led's again as I got tired of them.... Again... Nathn do you know the specific paint brand and color you used to match?

Thats a really REALLY good idea - Should I paint the OEM's or aftermarkets? I'll probably order these some time late next week - But I like this idea a lot. How do you open up the stock headlight units - is it true you have to put them in the oven to warm them up for a little bit - Or can you really just pop them open with a flathead?

Omelet
12-10-2011, 10:01 AM
I say paint the OEM ones and them put them back on the Jeep. To open them you DO have to heat them up.

AJeepZJ
12-10-2011, 10:25 AM
For how long and at what temperature - if you know? I'll probably do a write-up on it.

\I still have to do the write-up for the 4xG Matrix - But it will fully complete that on Tuesday though - I need to backtrack on something to clarify something. Then I'll submit it for you guys to review and make suggestions to make sure it's thorough.

Omelet

Bake it at around 220 for 12-15 minutes at a time. It will take a few cycles of baking it and prying it open until they are fully open. Just take your time and don't rush it! There a several write-ups for this across the many Jeep forums that I won't both making one.

Today, we did our tenth annual New Year day trip. (There will be a photo post shortly)

Yesterday, I added a switch in the back to turn on the backup lights and upper rear floods. I just open the door to reach the new switch, which is on top of the driver's side trim, by the cup holder. There's been a few times I need the back end lights turned on, other than putting on the brake, shifting into reverse, and hoping she doesn't roll.

Havent replaced it yet, still chasing information from Paramount performance and rcv performance that do custom CV's. Paramount do the 1000hp ones for the SRT8's. Cant complain about the factory ones though, theyve been through a lot.

Need a review on that diff guard.

Yeah - I think Nathan has some damage to his 4xGuard Diff Guard that shows had it not been there he probably would have jacked up his diff cover a lot. But yeah - I was expecting the worst. I was expecting fluid to leak from one of the bolts, or the cover just pop off and all my fluid drain and then have to spent 50-60 bucks buying diff fluid to pump it back in. But it literally took 10 minutes to install... Was very smooth. Actually the time it took to install all 3 of my latest 4xG skids is about the same amount of time it took to isntal just the 4xG Matrix.

Thanks guys! I bolted it to the brackets from my Westin bullbar for now. (it was cold out.) When it warms up I have some 1/4" steel that I'm gonna use to make some recovery points. Then I'll weld a a bracket onto that for the bar. Should be very solid then. It's stiff now and would probably hold my weight, but I wouldn't jump up and down on it as it's only bolted to the crossmember in the front. Poor design by Westin. A few more inches of steel and they could have grabbed onto the bolts for the factory tow hooks.

I didn't actually do this today but I'm just now posting pics from a few days ago. I added clevis mounts and 3/4" d-rings to the front of my Jeep. I saw this idea ona Jeep from the UK and I loved it. It's a different look than most.

That looks really cool! Great job!

I need to post some better pics. I have a 2" lift with 265/65/17 Nitto Terra Grapplers so the d-rings look pretty mean.

You on facebook dude? He has them posted all over the place on there (picture whore lol)

Chris - You ever think about trying to be in a magazine or sponsored (officially). I mean a WK on 37" has never been done, and im sure sponsors or mags would want to be all over it.

You think so? Where should i try

Off-Road Tire Companies (Goodyear, BFG, Cooper, Interco etc.)
Warn
JBA/4xguard
Shock Companies
Off-Road Wheel Companies (Black Rock, Mickey Thompson etc.)
Quadratec, others like it

I would stick with almost universal stuff, because the WK market is so small.

I think Tire/wheel companies would jump all over your rig personally. Who wouldn't want THEIR 37" tire on the biggest WK to date.

Question - Do yall think it would be worth painting this thing since its been used on the trail, or the heck with it. Its going under the jeep anyways. What would yall do?

I would paint it just because. A can will cost you $5.00 and then it will look like you bought a new one :) (dents included)

For the most part everything is torn down. Tomorrow I will build it all back up SL style! It will be slow going because I plan to do a little preservation at the same time, not to mention I am meticulous and like to take my time and make everything perfect :) I knocked out the little bit of cutting after dinner so I wasn't waking up the neighbors first thing in the morning.

Installed Motive Gear 3.73's in the rear end. The back lash ended up perfect and the install went very smooth. Got a front differential out of a 05 4.7 Liter WK with 75,000 miles on it. His jeep has 80,000 so it worked out perfect. Installed new axle seals, pinion seal and new bushings in the differential cause they were all shot. The steering rack he ordered will be in today so everything should be done tonight hopefully. In the next few weeks/months QT II will be replacing the QT I and JBA headers will get installed. He has a 4 inch BDS lift w/AEV Module (Rustys rear LCA's/BDS rear UCA's) running 33x12.5R18 Toyo MT's. He also has a Flowmaster muffler and K&N CAI.

Yeah the garage is a mess right now... but its easy to tell the new parts from old parts :D Do you want a "how to" for the gear swap or QT II swap?

Sounds like that's going to be a killer Jeep!

Thats what were hoping. But unfortunately it still has a 3.7 liter. But between the CAI, Headers and 3.73 gears (along with the option of 4 low) he should be good to go.

Yeah 3.73's have been installed in the rear of a QT I jeep thats soon to be a QT II 3.7 liter. No codes as we arent totally done with the front end. Not worried about and issues with the computer/trans...we got that all figured out.

He doesn't have it on the road yet.

Correct. It should be done tonight though. It has however had the 4 inch BDS lift installed for the past 2 years with 33x12.5's. This picture was taken two summers ago after the lift was installed.

Yes, BOTH :D

And I agree with you, while I am shy of the 33x12.5 - This past weekend, we obviously wheeled our Jeeps. Being one of but a VERY few of 3.7L's with 285's or larger, I found that my performance made the 3.7L more capable of handling these tires while wheeling. Like It honestly felt no different than when I wheeled my 4.0HO with the 33X12.5's.

You dont have any trouble with hill climbs and getting the tires to spin? When we were at RC coming out of Lake Christy, my buddy couldnt make it up any of the hill climbs because he just didnt have enough power (or gears) to get the tires spinning. Same thing when he tried pulling out my brother when he got stuck in his ZR2.

Sal-XK
04-03-2012, 01:45 PM
When it's dry AJ has issues with hills so does Toby they over heat the trans and have to stop and sometimes if they don't have momentum they can't make the hill. I think the mud helped them with allowing them to spin putting them further in the power band. Either one of those gears would help but the QT2 is the key part.

AJeepZJ

Yeah, the mud probably helped. But also, Sal, I was wheeling with the ESP entirely functional, this was always killing torque and momentum. Also, last summer my fans would refuse to come on to keep engine and tranny at low temps. Programmer resolved that. It's not a perfect set-up, but its a working one. I would not dream of trying towing someone out, lol - not the way im loaded.

But, of course gears and xcase swap will definitely Improve things A LOT.
