Ugh, was headed to do some wheeling at Hungry Valley and the check engine light came on.. I pulled into a gas station and read the codes (don't remember what they were other than a misfire, but there were 7 of them) I was hoping to drive it home and diagnose, but it died about 5 miles into the return trip. So I had to use my road side service for the first time (go Geico) and they towed me the the closest Jeep dealership. I'm not sure whats wrong yet, but I guess we'll see, should still be covered by my carmax extended warranty so I should only be $75. Just kind of a crappy day.

That is not a good thing, here's hoping they are fast to determine the problem and get you back on the road!

Update from today.. cylinder 5 misfire (yea I figured that one out on my own..) but they think a valve is staying open. So they have to remove the valve cover... warranty company won't approve the claim until they determine what is actually wrong. So currently I'm on the hook for the tear down. So hopefully tomorrow I'll have some more news, but I doubt anything else will get done today.

Which warranty do you have?

Carmax, used car dealership chain I'm not sure if there are any around you or not..

That sucks bud! Were you planning on meeting up with Jon and My dad? How much is it going to cost for them to diagnose it?

hoaxci5

Your dad was tiling or something so he wasn't going to make it, but Jon and I had planned on meeting up.
So far.. $135 to leave it with them, and I think it was $325 to start the valve cover tear down. I think that the $135 gets applied though. But in the end hopefully its just the $75 deductible once they figure out what the problem actually is..

The engine is covered so I don't understand what could not be covered.

I agree, the dealership made it sound like they are already asking about maintenance records though, so you know they plan to try to stick it to me.

Oh I see! I guess I should make sure I find all of my fluid receipt before something happens to mine...

That stinks what a bunch of BS bro. If you pull an engine apart you can pretty much tell if it's been neglected.

I wish this dealership would get to work.. they called and said yup it has a stuck valve.. we need to pull the head to see whats next. Great, that took you 2 days? Waiting some more...

Well it's getting a new left side head. (not sure if that is driver or passenger which ever side cylinder 5 is on)

Sounds like it's covered without an issue. Dealership service adviser called me and said I had a $75 deductible. He told me that the warranty company would only pay for 7 days of a rental car though, so thats going to cost me a little more out of pocket unless I can sweet talk that into the deal since it's not my fault they delayed the process by sending out an inspector which ate up 2 days of work. So I'll be playing that angle for sure.

So hopefully I'll have my Jeep back soon..

Got it back today. It was actually pretty convenient timing, my wife and I had planned to drive back to drop off the rental car since we found out the warranty would only pay for 7 days. The rental car needed to be returned 1 block from the dealership, on our way to return the car the dealership called and said the Jeep was ready.. so we don't have to make the 1 1/2 hour drive each way again.

So final verdict was a faulty valve seat. Apparently on these motors they can't just replace the valve though, so the whole head had to be replaced.
Here is a pic, it's blurry.. but I'll try to explain.
https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2011/10/IMG_20111005_171141-1.jpg

If you look at the second cylinder from on the right side, the black part of the valve is shifted off center toward the top. So the valve couldn't seal properly.

Final pocket damage for me.. $75 deducible for the repair, and I had to come $175 out of pocket on the rental because it was more than 7 days.

Break down of work.
$805 labor
$477 cylinder head
random gaskets, seals, fluid, oil and filter to bring the total to $1617.58

But it's home and in the garage now.

I have Carmax's extended warranty too. Glad they didn't try to nickel and dime you. In my most recent repair (oil pressure sender unit) the dealer hit me with an extra $50 in labor over the deductible. Carmax would not cover the time to remove and replace the 4XGuard skid plates because they were aftermarket accessories. Dumb. First time I had that issue. Next time I will pull them before it goes in. Ten minutes of my time tops.

Yea when I had my diff bushing done under warranty they tried to charge me for skid plate removal because the book time doesn't cover that. They started off at 1/2 hr labor, I told them they were all OEM except 1 (Belly pan) and that it shared 2 out of 5 bolts with the OEM pan so I got it knocked down to $10. I wasn't excited about having to pay at all, but I felt it was a good compromise.
