After blowing out my Superide shocks which I got with the Superlift back in May, I decided I needed something a bit beefier. Matt suggested the Rancho RS19287, an RS9000 Pro Series remote reservoir model. Today, I decided to check the full flex limits (swaybar disconnected) of an XK with the Superlift. With a compressed lenghth of 18.5" and an extended length of 30.5", the following photos show that the RS19287 should be a perfect fit. BTW, I ordered a set after taking the measurements and will post the install photos here also.

There are a couple of shots which show some other problem areas with the Superlift like the rear drive shaft rubbing the fuel tank and some very close tire clearance near the upper spring mount.

Back on the flexed side, the spring is quite loose...

The brake line is the limiter...

Here is the problem I have been having with the drive shaft boot. I cut off the side of the tank guard because it kept catching on the boot and causing small tears.

And here, another clearance concern. Not touching, but close!

A couple more of the coil gap. Would OME HDs fill this in?

Great info man!

I'll measure my OME HD's when i get them, but id expect them to be even shorter than the SL springs..

Another thing you can do is measure what the fully extended length of the shock would be at the point that the coil just becomes loose.... we can go back to the shock specs and try to find one that'd work as a limiter (or, you can use that length to get a set of limiting straps.

I think that would seriously limit the flex. As seen in the photo, that would shorten things by 3 inches! With the SL, there is no chance of the spring falling out like there was with the RR since there is a 4" extender on the centering bumper. The Superrides that I'm replacing were about 27" extended and that gave me less flex than with the old Bilstein 5150s I had on previously. The Rancho's should limit right at the point the brake line gets tight and as long as the head doesn't snap off, like the Bilstein's did, they should be perfect. My only concern is that the diameter of the Rancho's is too large and will interfere with the SL drop bracket on the passenger side (the Superride touches).

That's true that it would limit flex. I guess the only concern there is if the spring re-seats properly... but that can easily be resolved with a floor jack and a few minutes of time.

If the ranch is too big with the reservoir piggybacked, you can probably find a spot to mount it remotely.

Have you looked at the Fox Shocks? I have been running the 11" travel remote reservoirs and I love them! The 12" version might be a good option for you. If I remember correctly they measure 19-31".

Hey, would you mind posting up some details of your fox shocks in this thread: http://www.theultimatejeep.com/showthread.php/1174-Fox-Shocks-for-Rear?highlight=shocks

Specifically interested in how the mounts worked out

Sure!

TrialByFire - How are the wires leading down to the rear diff at full drop? Did you have to extend them? I ask because when I extend mine out to 28" they are just about taunt.

I personally would limit the flex right before anything touched or any lines got to tight.

I checked your post and they look nice! I'll do some pricing and see how they compare to the Rancho's. I like the servicability aspect.

I'm assuming you are referring to the ELSD wires which connect to the top of the diff. I didn't think to check, but in the first photo it appears that there won't be a problem (at least on a passenger-side drop. The SL kit includes a lot of drop brackets, like for the brake line for instance, and they may have one for the ELSD lines as well. The ABS sensor wires on the rear hub were very tight at full drop but I simply moved the rubber clamps where they attach to the brake line and all was good.

Once I install the Rancho's (or Fox), I'll check again to see if the shock is the limiter. If not, I can pretty easily drop the brake lines another 1/2".

Cool! I just didn't want you to rip it out if the axle dropped hard!

Oh well. Guess I'll stick with the SL springs.

Here is the update on the Rancho shocks:
I cancelled the order (twice). It seems the RS19287 is discontinued. A couple of companies showed stock on-line and one of them even told me over the phone they were in stock but after running my credit card waited for me to call a couple of days later and then told me that "the factory" had discontined the model. I now have a pair of Fox 2.0 Pro (12" travel) on order and will hopefully have them on Friday. I will probably have to extend the brake line drop bracket a little bit (1"?).

Man that sucks... but, at the same time, maybe it's for the best? Can't go wrong with the Fox shocks!

Well I've got the driver side done after a couple of hours of fiddling, checking clearance, looking at different reservoir mounting positions, and a trip to Lowes. Everything looks good! The limit on this side seems to be the upper control arm on the gas tank armour, so no need to extend the brake line. Tomorrow morning I'll finish the other side (should go much quicker), then off to Gordy's Hill for a test run.

After a weekend of (hard!) wheeling, they worked great! The ride is very nice, the range seemed perfect and almost all the tire rubbing went away! They are worth every penny!

When I got to the place where the gathering was held and all I saw were trailers, I knew I was in trouble! 40+ buggies and only two semi-stock vehicles (me and a lady in a TJ). Everything was super-hard! The only real wheelin' I did was at night (so no photos). It was supposedly the easiest trail there and was the hardest thing I've done yet. I did leave them with a lot more respect for the XK (and my tail between my legs).

Yeah, the shocks are really nice! I don't know why the pics rotated on me. They were right when I previewed the post.
