I have that exact one already best thing I've spent my money on lately. :) I got it in a kit with a 18v reciprocation saw, drill, light, impact, two batteries and tool bag for $220:eek:

The funny thing is I almost went with porter cable. Then I looked it up and was reminded why I have Dewalt tools in my garage. The DeWalt tools use metal gears and insides where the other ones like porter cable use plastic gears and such. Plastic on an impact gun:confused: really made no sense so I stuck with the DeWalt again and I'm very happy with them as usual.

Love the dewalt cordless stuff!!!

I've got this one for the impact stuff:
https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2011/04/IMG00373201104240923-1.jpg
It's one of the more heavy duty commercial models of the 18v ones.
Had to order this one cause they don't carry it at any local store that I've seen.

and my stack o Dewalts:

Bought these and the flashlight in a large kit from lowes.

I've had these for about 4 years now and they work like a charm. Not too many jobs I don't use em for.

I also have a 18V craftsman I bought 11 years ago and it will still rip your arm off in low gear LOL. But the thing weighs like 10LBS and I'm down to one battery for it. Lowes has some weird kits I went in to by the old man a battery for his dewalt impact they wanted $80 for one. But had two for sale for $90. Then I was like I want an impact too. they had one for $220:eek: but right next to it the bundle pack I got for $220:confused: not sure why they do that but I wanted the saw any way so Wining Epic wining :D

You might try refurbishing the original batteries at batteries plus. They can pull apart the batteries and replace the guts with new stuff. Always cheaper than you can get new ones.

I have the Dewalt Sazall and Drill. Just currious what is better on the impact? I havent had any trouble just using the 18v drill with the attachments for everything so far.

Matt

The impact puts out a lot more torque than the drill does it in pulses (impacts) which are good for breaking nuts/bolts loose. Comes in handy for stuff like lug nuts, tie rod bolts, etc.

Our guys in the shop have gone to using battery powered tools a lot. They still have their air ratchets and impacts, mainstays in body shops since forever, but they stay in the tool box. They use mainly use either Snap-On or Matco Or Mac Tools but still battery powered. A re-chargeable 1/4" ratchet, a 3/8" impact, and a 1/2" impact and you're set.

I was really surprised at how strong the impact was! I drove a nut down and put my torque wrench on it and it was at 60LBS and I didn't even hit it that hard. Someone needs to tighten something down full power and test the torque I'm curious now.

Whats the difference in this one? I know the old mans impact has a light on it and mine don't and his seems smaller. I guess they must have several different models. Is this production changes or are they actually different in power or something?

Oh man I love Dewalt too! Back when I worked construction I started off using other lesser brands, but after braking a couple I decided to shell out some real money. I still have my original Dewalt cordless drill and still use it as my primary drill. I dropped it off a few roofs, I have had it smoking a couple times, and dropped it in a toilet once :D Moral of the story, I have beat the piss out of it for years and it is still performing flawlessly!

A couple weeks ago I bought one of these for the wife, but I find myself using it all the time.

This thing is tiny, compact, and I love the LEDs in the face to see what you are doing from any angle! I have been able to reach places that I couldn't before. (Like I was able to relocate my ARB compressor where I originally wanted it, but at the time I couldn't get my drill in there to drill the mounting holes)

That thing is solid - I think Sal used one similar to it - It's pretty crazy it's like the next best thing to air tools. It's strong enough to completely compress coil springs repeatedly (for those who make mistakes and have to decompress and recompress - lol)....

There is a commercial version of this tool that you can't find easily in stores. In fact it's hard to find online a bit. Runs about 200-270 new with the case, 2 batteries and a charger. I've got one and it's exactly like a real impact gun. Lets see if i can dig up the model.
It's a full size 1/2" drive.

Found it, Here it is:
https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2011/12/dewalt-1.jpg

•Frameless motor for extended tool durability and life
•Compact size and weight allow access into tighter areas and reduces user fatigue
•1,740 in-lbs of torque to perform a wide range of fastening applications
•0-2,400 rpm/0-2,700 ipm for faster application speed
•Replaceable brushes for increased serviceability
•Textured anti-slip comfort grip provides maximum comfort
•Durable magnesium gear case and all metal transmission for extended durability
•Heavy-duty impacting mechanism directs torque to fastener without kickback

It's nearly the same most likely except the tip is made for standard sockets. The same sockets you may already be using on an air driven impact drill.

Which one of these do I need to bust the lug nuts on my Commander? I'd like a kit with 2 batteries/charger. Also what size socket do I need.?
Where do you buy these? I've only found small ones at Lowes and Sears.
Perhaps I should just try and flag down the Snap-On guy. I noticed the shop rotating my tires was using snap on.

Sal-XK
03-15-2012, 02:58 PM
If you want to bust lugs you'll have to order the dewalt one or hit the snap on guy for sure. The dewalt one that will do that I haven't seen it in any stores

Order this:
http://www.amazon.com/DeWALT-DW059K-2-18-Volt-Ni-Cad-Cordless/dp/B0001LQLE2/ref=pd_cp_hi_0

300 ft-lb, it's the strongest one they make.

Then any 1/2" impact socket set will do. 3/4" (or 19mm) 6-point socket for the lugs.

That thing really looks huge but it's half the price of a Snap on...They list for $570 online. Kinda pricy for a tool I wouldn't use that much, but could be a life saver if I need it.

My friend has the snap-on... they're not much different in size.

A step up would be the Milwaukee.... more then Dewalt but less than Snap-On. This one is a beast at 475 ft-lb

That's looks exactly like what I want. ALso made in the USA is a big plus to me. Now which impact socket set do I need for it? It will only be used to change tires on my Commander and two XJ's and then only in an emergency. I'm old and can't be wrestling a 4 way in the desert heat. I travel to a lot of remote areas and changing a tire has always been a concern to me.

Matt, I just ordered both items. Thank you very much for your assistance. I used to be a big strong guy who never met an obstacle I couldn't overcome. Since the death of my wife I have had two open heart surgeries and changing a tire is a big deal for me. I'm just not nearly as strong as I used to be. I was trained many years ago to adapt and overcome. This tool will give me confidence to stay self sufficient. (it'll also be a good bribery tool to get some young guy to change it for me. HAHA)
Thank you
HT

Actually I feel pretty good for a guy pushing 70, but with the medical procedures I've had you never regain the strength you had before. Getting old isn't so bad. I can get in my Jeep and drive anywhere I wish without a thought of cost or how far it is or how long it will take. I've decided I'm not going to stay home and count the money I saved by not going anywhere. Damn what a beautiful country we live in!

Got the Milwaukee impact wrench on Tuesday and tried it out on one of my old Cherokees. It zipped off a lug nut in about 2-3 seconds. I think I could change a tire with this without breaking a sweat except for maybe retrieving the spare from under the Jeep. I took off 3 lugnuts and managed to scratch each one pretty bad. I won't complain about that if I need to change a tire in some remote area. Small price to pay but annoying just the same.
I called the tire guy who rotates my tires and he said scratching the nuts (no pun intended) is not a concern as it never happens. He uses a Snap-on battery impact wrench. I wouldn't think brand name means anything. I've had my tires rotated 3 times and there is not a hint of a scratch on my nuts. (again no pun intended although it is funny as hell).

Matt
03-21-2012, 05:07 PM
What do you mean by scratched? That should have nothing to do with the impact gun itself... what socket were you using on it?

Sal-XK
03-21-2012, 05:19 PM
I think you used the wrong size socket. My lugs had those annoying chrome caps on them I still have some stuck on I can't get off so I need two sizes to get my lugs off :(

redrockv8
03-21-2012, 05:36 PM
I used 19mm on the first one and 3/4 on the other two. Now that you mention it I think my Cherokees have those chrome caps. Perhaps that's what was scratched. Does the Commander have those? Mine is an 07. By scratched I mean the edges had noticible marks and the flat areas had small scratches.

Sal-XK
03-21-2012, 06:13 PM
Ya my XK had caps on the lugs :( I use a 19mm for the ones with caps still stuck on and an 18mm for the ones without I think thats right LOL

Matt
03-21-2012, 06:18 PM
Using the 6-point impact socket too, right?

NeilSmith
03-21-2012, 06:56 PM
dont know about the Jeeps but on some cars you have to remove the chrome caps first, then take off the lug nuts. the caps are only plastic. they also make sockets with a plastic inside that keeps from marring the chrome lug nuts.

redrockv8
03-21-2012, 07:04 PM
Yes 6 point. Isn't 19mm & 3/4 the same?

Matt
03-21-2012, 07:10 PM
19mm is slightly smaller than 3/4... but normally doesn't make a difference with 6-point sockets because of the size of the contact area (for what its worth, i use 19mm on my jeep).
