View Full Version : Steering wheel covers?

My steering wheel is a bit beat up and is starting to flake away where i grip it. I've never used a wheel cover before but have been in plenty of car with annoying/ugly steering wheel covers. Has anyone used a quality steering wheel cover that was actually comfortable and not just another annoyance?

Maybe the wheelskins?
http://www.wheelskins.com/eurotone_wheelskin.php?wheel=et_lg3

Would be cool to get the Euro version.... do black top/bottom with white sides to somewhat match the theme of my stormtrooper...

They're leather, so i'd think the white wouldn't be hard to keep clean especially if its just the sides. I'm a 10 o'clock holder and keep my right hand on the lower section at about 5 o'clock. So i wont be gripping the white area often

Sal... wheelskins or just a generic wheel cover???

What's the difference? The one I had I wouldn't call generic it wasn't cheap if I remember correctly. I had it for my mustang, I do remember it was specific for my car.

The difference being that i couldn't tell whether you were responding to the "wheelskins" directly as a review or some other manufacturer. And that, as i mentioned, there are a lot of crappy ones out there.

I'm trying to find a good one... i figure good ones have to exist... they all can't be crap, right?

The reviews on the wheelskins are quite good...

I have considered wheelskins a few times now, but I just don't like how it looks. Granted it is better than every other wheel cover. I have decided I will bring mine into an upholstery shop soon and have them recover it for me, but this time in REAL leather.

I bought a Jeep wheel cover, I guess from Autozone, a while back. It was easy to clean, and had 'JEEP' on it - so it made me happy. The OEM steering was so thin, it needed to be a little thicker... So it served to purposes.

Got my samples from wheelskins today... the sand matches my seats almost perfectly. So im going to give it a shot: Top & Bottom will be Sand colored with black for the sides.

If you want your wheel re-done, this is even better then factory..Looking to do this myself..

All of the wheelskins "attempts" I have seen look pretty bad..B&I removes your old leather and replaces with new leather of your choice by a professional.. They come out awesome from this place and turnaround is pretty quick.

I have had a wheelskins installed for a few years now. I am pretty happy with it but you should take your time when installing to do it right. I rushed and messed up one thread and I always notice it. Don't get me wrong - most people think its a factory leather wheel. They fit pretty tight. As far as wear - it could be better. I got grey and the dye has worn off in spots to black. What I do like about the cover is that the steering wheel is a little thicker and is more comfortable for me when driving. OH - also make sure everything is nice and warm so you can stretch the leather during the install.

Sending the wheel off is also a great option - but you have to remove your airbag and the stealer will charge you to reset.

Yeah I'd rather not replace the steering wheel.... maybe if this was my 3rd vehicle and I could let it sit for a few days..

Thanks for the tips on wheelskins. Maybe I'll hold out till the summer and install it on a nice hot day....

You can sort of see how it looks with the wheelskin on

Thanks!

Does it stay relatively tight around the thicker "spoke" regions?

yeah it does. You can lift it a little bit, but it's definitely not loose.

Ordered the wheelskins today... did black top/bottom and sand sides (figured it'll stay cleaner looking that way). My wheel is disolving pretty bad at the 10 o'clock position since thats where i primarily leave my left hand, and i guess im a greasy italian ;)

I'll let it bake in the jeep on a hot day before i install it.

Put the cover on today... I let it bake in another vehicle all day while we were driving around the XK (helped my old man with a few chores today). So when i got home the covers was nice and hot, and the XK wheel was relatively cool from driving around with the windows down.

A bit tedious (actually, very tedious) and my fingers hurt like hell; but i'm very pleased with the results. It's nice and tight and hopefully stays that way!

It's not bulky at all. Only bulge is really because of the double-seam area since this goes over the current cover; so the seam is more evident.

Was wondering who was going to be the first to comment on that.

Sal, you never disappoint!

I think it looks pretty good, matches the interior really nice.

Just a quick update.

Still extremely happy with this cover. First off, my dad is as picky as I am and never even asked if I had a wheel cover on while offroading last weekend (he did most of the driving). To me, that's a big test to pass right there lol.

Also, with the vehicle baking in this 100F heat the wheel cover is still night and tight.

Conclusion = if you take your time and install this thing correctly, it's $60 well spent!

It held up really well to some "white knuckle / oh-$hit" driving too :p

Going over 6 months now and still very happy. We've had some bitter cold temps here and the cover hasn't loosened up at all.

I've had quite a few comments from people who have ridden in my jeep about the steering wheel too... mostly from "Jeep" guys who say they never realized that there was a color matched steering wheel option (then they find out its a cover).

So yeah... if any of you guys who hate "covers" need a fix until you have your wheel professionally done.... give this a shot. You may end up leaving it on :p

Just about a year now and our first 90+ degree day baking the interior.... this wheel cover is still as grippy and as tight fitting as the day i installed it.
