Well, I suppose it's about time to start my build/garage. I'm combining my Jeep build with my garage build since they are both on-going at the same time.

The Jeep is a 2005 Grand Cherokee with a V6 and QT1. (I'll come back and update my jeep build soon.)

The garage is a 24' x 30' stick built wrapped in metal with 2 nine foot automatic garage doors and a basic 36" passage door.

Originally when I moved here 3 years ago, there was an old building behind my house. It was a 20' x 20' block building and the roof was about to cave in. I stored what I had to in there but I always hated it. I don't have any pictures of it because it was that pathetic. Well, summer of 2011, some stupid idiot broke into that crappy block building an stole a few tools. I was pissed to say the least and said I'll fix it so they won't be able to do that again. So I hired a crew and they built my garage August 2011.

First the old building came down and a pad was made.

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2012/02/100_0726-1.jpg

6" x 6" post in each corner and 2" x 6" studs go horizontal. And the passage door.

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2012/02/100_0727-1.jpg

Rafters, sheathing boards (spelling?), and begin wrapping it with some insulation and white metal on the sides.

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2012/02/100_0728-1.jpg

Finish white metal sides and charcoal gray roof. Eaves are boxed to keep the critters out. (critters = birds and thiefs)

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2012/02/100_0729-1.jpg

Concrete poured. 4 inches all around with 6" at the sides. The cieling is 10' tall so no room for a lift thus only need 4" of concrete.

Since then I have filled it up with all my junk and my wife's stuff.

We were pretty packed on the floor with all the stuff so me and my dad built and overhead storage.

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2012/02/100_0936-1.jpg

A couple of weeks ago, I hung receptacle boxes and ran the wire for them. And this past weekend I installed a few receptacles. Pretty straight forward stuff.

OK now to the jeep.

2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee, V6, QT1, Khaki outside, tan inside.

I don't think I have any stocker pictures but you all know what it would look like. It was in the body shop getting a new front end where the PO hit a deer at 55 mph. So I bought for a steal.

Within 6 months or so of having it, I added a 2" Rusty's lift, Moabs, 265/70/17 Nitto Terra Grapplers, and a Rola Roof rack.

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2012/02/100_0604-1.jpg

I didn't do much offroading at this time. I didn't know people that did and I had no where close by.

About a year after owning it, I added JKS front discos, 4xGuard Matrix with Receiver, and a CB.

Back in November 2011, I installed Monroe Load Levelers (longer version). Once again no pics but I will get some soon. I need to fix the boot thing, it has slid down.

Here is an offroading pictures with them installed. You can kinda tell.

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2011/12/Dec172011-1.jpg

I got tired of trying to hear everyone on my CB. It's in the cubby hole as stated above and it really muffles the speaker. So I installed an external speaker from Radioshack.

Since I've installed the Load Levelers, the back is sitting higher than the front. It has a very steep rake in my opinion. So I order the front setup of this

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2012/01/100_0931-1.jpg

I have the struts also but no time or money to get the install done. It'll be done by 3/31 for URE I know.

Finished up the receptacles in my garage this evening. I believe there were 12 receptacle boxes (2 gang so that makes 24 actual receptacles). This weekend, I'll start on the overhead lights wiring and probably go to Lowe's and get some keylesses.

My SOLID diff cover is suppose to be here tomorrow. I'll post pics if it comes.

Opinions please:

Option 1. Leave SOILD diff cover the color it is.

Option 2. Paint the SOLID Diff cover black.

Option 3. Paint it some wild color like flourescent purple (this is a joke)

I would leave it black unless you were planning on adding a color scheme to your vehicle (like red accents, then paint it red)

I dont know and thats why Im asking, but is it good to put that much fluid in there. If the fill holes were at the exact same spot but with a deeper cover i wouldnt see it being a problem. But since the fill hole is so high that brings the entire level of the fluid higher.

AJeepZJ
02-19-2012, 02:34 PM
I responded on another forum about the location of this fill hole... As stated, too much or too little fluid can compromise diff operation.

criket
02-19-2012, 03:49 PM
I"m not sure on proper amount for best performance on this. The way I look at it, SOLID put the fill plug there for a reason. It's kinda like adding a oil pan with more fluid capacity to a motor or a deeper pan to a transmission. They allow more fluid/oil. I'm sure there's someone out there who can explain why but I don't know the answer.

I'll run what level I have in it and report back in a few weeks of driving. I'll be the guinea pig on this. If it fails, then I'm going balls out on a axle swap.

Sal-XK
02-19-2012, 04:39 PM
Like Toby said you can add bigger oil pans to hold more fluid with no issues and that system is under pressure unlike the axle that is not under a fluid pressure. I can't think of any reason adding the extra fluid in combination with the larger cover would cause an issue. In fact jeep probably set the stock one up the way did to save money needing less fluid for each jeep that rolled off the line

Holaday07 4.7
02-19-2012, 04:42 PM
I have these on the TJ now. I would not want to put that much in, i filled mine to where i could just reach the oil with my finger tip. Overfilling can blow the seal and cause damage, at least that is what I read. Who knows though.

AJeepZJ
02-19-2012, 06:04 PM
Yes... over filling can lead to the diff oil working past the axle seals, and/or getting pushed out the breather tubes.

Is the cover larger or is the hole just higher? If its a larger cover even with the extra fluid the level should sit the same inside as the stock.

A little of both. The cover is deeper (that's why I snapped the pic showing the clearance to the track bar) and the plug is higher by about 1/2" or so. BTW, the plug is threaded so that alone is worth the upgrade.

That sucks! just buy one a new oil pan for $3 then you can reuse the fluid that's in there.

criket
02-21-2012, 05:20 PM
The SOLID Diff cover has the PROPER amount of fluid in it now. I bought a small hand pump and it was taking FOREVER. So I just took the cover off and started over. Had it fixed in less than 2 hours (1 hour of that was waiting on the rtv sealant to set up).

I recommend this cover to any one out there. It was my fault that I put too much fluid in there. I filled it up to where I could just touch the oil with my pinky and whatda know? Too much fluid by that point. It came out of the breather tube. Notice the shinyness on the right side of the axle.

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2012/02/Fixed-1.jpg

***NOTE to everyone. Do NOT put more than the recomended amount of fluid in the rear axle, no matter how high or low the fill plug is. It WILL come out of the breather tube. I'll take this one for the XK/WK team. Peace fool***

Finished up paint and assembled the struts..... partially. I need a spring compressor but the only one they had to rent at the parts store was the cheap ones. I decided to wait and have the local shop do it on Monday.

Here are some progress pics.

Edit: In the last pic, I know the springs are not seated right/proper. That's because the strut isn't bolted together yet. It will be fixed correctly once I get them into a spring compressor.

The OME struts are scheduled for install on Thursday. I'm having the local shop do it since I don't have air tools to tackle the bolts. I'm still working on completing my garage so I CAN have the ability use air tools, LOL.

I've been spraying all the bolts with PB blaster over the last 2 days and will continue until Thursday.

I've found out that my hood strut is going out, again. I have to push the hood all the way up. It will stay up sort of but won't go up on it's own. I guess I'll have to replace that also. This will make the second time.

Sal-XK

The hood goes up on it's own? I think the strut suppose to help you lift the hood then just hold it open. Granted the amount of help it needs could mean it's worn. I forget but should only take like two or three fingers to lift the hood.

Had the local shop install the OME front struts for me. I like it. The bigger wheel well in front does make it look higher in the front but it really isn't. It sits level now.

So my combo lift is:

OME HD front struts

Rear
factory rear coil
2" lift spacer

Garage Update: I finshed all the overhead light fixtures this morning. I also put up the receptacle covers everywhere except on 2: The 220 volt and one where I need to trim the cover a little to get it to fit. Alas, there are no more wires hanging except where the breaker box goes. That is next

Also went out for a little photoshoot with the WK. Nothing spectacular, just wanting to show you guys how it sits now.

Front: OME HD Front struts and springs
Rear: 2" spacer lift, Factory springs, Monroe Load Levelers F150 version.

WK update: I saw AJ's step pad mod and thought I'd give mine a try. After dragging numerous things over this step pad it had several deep scratches. So here is what I wanted to cover up a little bit. I used spray on bed liner (cheap stuff but that's ok with me. I know how to do it right with more expensive stuff later).

Garage update: I ordered some shelves from Sam's Club last week. They came in today so I put them up. Finally, I can get organized some.

I ordered 3 sets of the same shelf.

Got one shelf up.

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2012/03/100_1001-1.jpg

And here is the finished product. On the shelf nearest in the following picture, the top of one of the side pieces was bent. I tried to straighten it but couldn't get it all to line up so I put the top shelf on notch lower. I think it'll be ok.

those shelves are awesome! I have the 6' version in my garage. Only issue I had was the boards will warp in about 6 months... but if you go get some 1x3s they fit perfectly below them like joists going across. I put a 1x3 every 6-8" and now they're good to go.

I'll take a pic if you're not sure what im talking about

Yea take a pic and post it if you don't mind Matt. These "boards" that came with it don't fit down in the grooves like its suppose too. I have a bunch of thicker plywood laying around, I may swap them out for the better plywood.

Oh yea, and the main reason I didn't get the version like you have Matt, in the last pic with all 3 shelves, you can see my wifes car. The version you have is about 6-8 inches deeper and would stick out further. THere wouldn't be much room to walk between the shelves and the front of her car. Trust me, I wanted the ones you have but had to make a compromise. You know how it is with a wife. :)

Garage update: I went to Lowe's yesterday and got some 2.5" lag bolts and washers and some wood as Matt suggested. The wood i'll have to notch out to make it fit better but it will work great and add a lot of stability.

The lag bolts and washers are to bolt the shelves to the 6x6 posts and studs. As you can see in the above pictures, the shelves will butt up against the wall. I'm always afraid of shelves falling when they become overloaded or a kid climbing on them and the shelf falling. So these lag bolts will take care of that.

I also found 2 bolts, 2 washers, and 2 nuts lying around and I used them to bolt the shelves together. I wanted to connect all the shelves together to make it more stable.

This may be overkill but I garuantee you, these shelves are NOT going to fall. Safety first.

Garage update: I used Matt's advice and bought, cut, installed the cross boards under the shelves. These shelves are strong now and shouldn't warp. But if they do, I'll just replace the cheap partical board shelf with 1/4" or 1/2" plywood.

Finally organized!!!

I'm not positive yet. I know it was NOT coming down the windshield into the cab. All the area underneath and behind the dash on the driver's side was dry and had dust on it.

I have a theory though. In the picture below, there is a yellow circle. On the metal part on the outside of the rubber seal in the circle, there is usually a small puddle of water when it rains. There has been a puddle there several times but I haven't had any problems.

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2012/03/100_10152-1.jpg

When it rained REALLY hard yesterday/last night, I assume that it was too much and it overflowed pass the rubber seal at the bottom of the door (inside the yellow circle) and into the drivers floor board.

But I'm not positive.

AJeepZJ
03-25-2012, 06:02 AM
There are drain tubes that run along the bottom of the doors (at least on WK's). Sometimes they get clogged, when they do - I think water builds up along the seam between the actual door and the body of the Jeep. It could leak ANYWHERE along that seem if it doesn't flush properly, but it will obviously travel downward and puddle in the floorboard.

Also, this happened to me when I didn't close the door completely, rained over night and came home to soaked spot under my driver floor mat.

criket
03-25-2012, 04:30 PM
Well I went out again this morning and there was water in the floor board again. So this evening I vacuum it out and pulled all the door seals on the driver side. I cleaned all the seals around the windshield channel and chalked soem areas that I thought may be problematic.

I did find however that the seal on the door that goes around the bottom isn't looking that great. I may order a new seal and replace it.

What's you guy's thoughts on bedlining the interior and installing a couple of drain holes? How would bedliner in khaki color look?

Just be careful with some of the modules located under the seat. Having a bed-lined floor with drain holes may give you (or someone else) a false sense of security and try hosing down the floor when it gets dirty.

Yea this is true. It wouldn't be good hosing it down and then the passenger air bag module not work.

I hope I can clean the original carpet and get the moldy smell out. Ugh....

Sal-XK

You can get spray that kills the mold and the smell. I wouldn't line the floor the carpet and pad I'm sure you noticed by now blocks out a lot of noise and in a few months a lot of heat. I would just replace the seal and get it water tight again.

Can't be any worse than the floorboards on the rusty Toyota truck I use to have. I went and got my tetenus shot the day I bought it.

Ok small update on the carpet deal. I just got back from Alabama on business and the carpet is still a little damp, not much. The inside of the Jeep has a slight smell to it but only happens when it sits in the hot sun all day. I may have to replace some of the padding underneath the pedals or spray that stuff Sal was talking about.

Where does one get that spray Sal? Auto Zone?

Sal-XK
03-30-2012, 04:41 AM
Mine had that real bad smell when I was dealing with my leaking issues. Not sure what brand the guy used but after he sprayed everything the smell wen't away. I seen mold spray at Home Depot the other day next to the acetone. Your carpet is taking to long to dry bro your risking more mold smell on that. I would put a box fan or two on it that thing will be dry in an hour. I think if you want to spray your floor it couldn't hurt as long as the carpet and pad were going back in. Depending on what you spray it with you could even reduce your temperatures in the cab isn't there some type of reflective heat reducing spray stuff?

Been a while since I updated this bad boy.

Jeep
Order the Hypertech Speedo Calibrator from Summit. Should be here next week. I plan to do a 3.73 gear swap soon. I already have the gears but I need more parts. I plan on doing a few more upgrades while I have everything tore apart.

Gear swap plan:
- Find a rear axle out of another WK/XK. I really want the axle out of an SRT but if I can't find one cheap enough, I'll stick with the 8.25.
- Install rear axle/3.73 gears.
- Put locker in rear.
- Install rear adjustable track bar from Rusty's.
- Of course new rear brake pads.
- For the front, I have the gears already installed in a carrier. So that's taken care of.
- Probably upgrade to new CV axles. It's according to how much the cost would be.
- Upgrade a few bushings on the front since a few of them are completely shot.
- Use the Hypertech to recalibrate
- Test drive it. On the road and then at URE.
- Drink cold beverage and pass out in the hammock.

Doesn't sound too bad does it?

Why dont you get a front differential out of a XK/WK that already has 3.73's installed????

Well I have one but I need the shop to verify that it's set up correctly. If it isn't, I'll be diving into the local junkyards.

That's why I said on hold as of currently. Once the shop looks at it, I'll know for sure which way to go next.

THe heavy rains over the last couple of days produced a couple of leaks in the house, so this comes first. And then to finish wiring the garage and solving the water runoff problem in front of it.

Changed the oil, oil filter, and air filter today.

As I was rolling the driver's window up this morning, it all of a sudden stopped. (I was at leaving work and it was 530 am, so it was dark). I thought, oh well must be the regualtor motor and went home. After the sun came up, I went to look at it and the window had got off track. The glass was trying to go to the left around the plastic at the side mirror. I used a screwdriver and pryed the plastic back enough and the window went down very easily. So at this point I know that the window regulator motor is ok. So I roll the window back up making sure that the window didn't get off track again. Once the window was up I noticed that it is cracked horizontally. When it got off track it went to the left and cracked the window. I'll call insurance tomorrow and they should cover it, I hope.

Update:

The Jeep will get a new driver's front window on Monday for free. I called the insurance and explained to them what happened (also in the above post) and they said yep it's a glass claim. We'll have a shop of your choice install it and there will be no deductible or anything out of your pocket. Score!!!

The garage finally has electricity as of today. My BIL works for the local telephone company and he brought the ditch witch and within an hour we had the wire buried underground. Then after another trip to Lowe's and about and hour ro so later, it had electricity. Finally the automatic garage doors work and I have lights and receps. This means I can work onthe Jeep at night.

Cool man. Sounds like things are working out!

So much for things working out....2 weeks after the BIL and I buried the wire it broke somewhere between the house and the garage. No electricity at all to the garage. ARRGGGHH!!!!! I think the ditch witch that he used broke the wire in the process of digging and burying. It's the kind of ditch witch that digs and burys at the same time. By the way, the wire that broke was free and the ditch witch labor was free. Lesson learned.

Solution: Go to Lowe's and buy the big arse mobile home wire rated at 100 amps and is actually supposed to go under ground. Rent the PROPER ditch witch and bury that fool, hook up 100 amp breakers at both the house breaker box and the garage breaker box and BOOM, we now have electricity again. And its rated at 100 amps instead of the wussy 30 the previous wire was.

This was done today.

So all in all, the wire breakage was a blessing because I got all new stuff and upgraded to 100 amps in the process.

Operating a ditch witch will wear on you, lol.

Since it was raining today, I did a little project in the garage.

I'm always looking for my nitrile gloves when I work on my jeep or engine. And then when I find them, I put the box on the table and in a few mintues they get in my way. So I have move them. And them move them again. By this point, I put them in a place where I know they won't get in the way. And then the next day I've lost them and this process starts over.

So here is my solution. Wall mounted glove holder.

I had all the materials so I made one. Excuse the rough cuts, I used a jig saw. I wish I had a table saw....

LOL, give me about a month and it should be running.

Look at it this way. With this motor, you' d be the first one to the trails and the first one back to camp. :P

Well, my buddy with his TJ has some work he wants to do to it (actually he needs to do it, lol). He doesn't have a garage so we are using mine. Works out great because I get some wrenching time :)

Here is the list of repairs/mods:
- Freeze plugs. One has come loose on the back of the motor and is leaking through the bell housing. So we gotta pull the motor.
- Upgraded track bar
- 1.25" body lift
- 1" motor lift

We started on Saturday around 12 noon. Here are some pictures.

Not a lot done to it since I'm only working on it about an hour every couple of nights this week. We got to cut the exhuast and unplug the computer connections and she should pop right out.

Oh and if you guys don't ahve one of these an dneed to disconnect a fuel line or AC line, get one! Fuel line came off within 3 seconds with this tool.

More progress made on my buddy's TJ. No pictures though because it looks the same, lol.

FINALLY got the motor and trans free from each other tonight. There were 2 more bolts at the top of the bell housing and they were external torx. Had to go to Auto Zone and pick up the correct socket and a couple extensions.

I still couldnt' get to the bolts because of lack of space so I did some research and found a solution that worked for me.
1. Put ratcher tie down strap around trans and tie to frame. Just to keep the trans from moving/falling.
2. Put trans in 4th gear so when the trans moves, it wont' bend the shifter.
3. Remove bolt on motor to motor mounts.
4. Remove motor mounts completely.
5. Lower engine until the motor mounts on the block are past the ones on the frame (or as far down as you can get it)
6. Remove consol, shifter knob, shifter boot, and metal plate around shifter.
7. Use many extensions and the external torx socket and remove external torx bolts from bell housing.
8. Raise engine and free it from the trans.
9. Have cold beer.

So now I have about 6 or so more electrical connections and the engine can be removed. The engine is currently loose and free and is beggin to be taken out.

More updates coming this weekend (with pictures)

Good progress today. Ricky (owner of TJ) came over and we pulled the motor and set it on a couple of tires.

I had to cut the exhuast bolts with the sawzall and that was the most difficult part. There were a few more electrical connections that we had to get and we had to remove the front grill. The hoist wouldn't go high enough.

Oh and yes I did adjust the jack and block of wood under the jack before I left. It just got moved over there while we were pulling on the motor.

Got to work on the TJ some tonight. I been sick all week and haven't done much but cleaned up the garage.

Tonight I pulled the exhaust manifolds and installed new brass freeze plugs. As I was putting them in I realized that kit didn't have enough plugs. I need 2 more plugs. Anyway, I put in what I had and I'll call him tomorrow to tell him.

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2013/02/100_1354_zps9fb2e831-1.jpg

After that, I pulled the valve cover off to install the new valve cover gasket. I inspected the valve train while I was there. All was good, a couple of push rods were a little tight, no broken springs or loose rockers. Very good. Then I cleaned the valve cover and head and installed the new valve cover gasket.

And the one in the back of the head

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2013/02/100_1357_zps695cbd5d-1.jpg

Here is theback side of one of the original freeze plugs that I took out. Looks like the water in it had some rust. Whatcha think?

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2013/02/100_1358_zpsb92a96e3-1.jpg

Then I took the oil pan off and pulled the rear main cap to replace the rear main seal. Everything that I've read on the interwebs says that these 4.0's leak from the rear main seal. Even after they are changed out for new ones.

Here is a pic of the crank where I pulled the old seal from the top half. It took me a while since I had to use a punch and hammer to push it around and out from the crank. One it moved, it came out very easily. I had to be sure that I didnt' nick the crank or make any major boo boos. Then I installed the new seal after coating it in new engine oil. It went in very easily (no pics of install since it's hard to hold a camera and install the new seal)

Here is the main cap with the old seal in it

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2013/02/100_1362_zpsbc5fe8f4-1.jpg

I couldn't get the old seal out of the main cap. I tried and ending up nicking the bearing. I carried to my local engine shop and she hit it with a scotch brite pad and soomthed it out. She was able to save the bearing!!!! Thank goodness because I would've had to buy a whole new bearing set just for half of a bearing which was over $100!!! THAT made my day.

Tomorrow nite schedule:
-Carry main cap to work to use on a vise to get old seal out
-Install new seal in main cap
-Install main cap and torque
-Install new oil pan gasket.
-Then motor is done!

Looking good!!! When will it be all back together and running?

Hopefully within 2 weeks. You see, I work 1st shift, Ricky works 2nd shift, and I have to babysit my son every 3rd weekend (wife is a nurse). So this build has been accomplished by working out in the garage about 2-3 hours 3-4 nights a weeks and then whenever me and Ricky can get together to work on it. It has felt VERY slow. I know Ricky wants it back running again very soon as do I.

Thanks for the kind words man. I need them, lol.

Got to work on it more tonight. I had the stomach bug yesterday, missed work and garage time. Blah. Also, sorry for the lack of pics. Camera died after 3 pictures, dangit!

Carried the main cap to work and used the vise to get the other half of the rear seal out. Took all of 30 seconds. So pissed, I need a vise BAD!

I put the new seal in the main cap, cleaned the cap and bearing, put bearing back in cap, main cap back in motor, torqued it to 80 ft lbs and BAM! New rear main seal in.

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2013/02/100_1363_zpsbc393dd6-1.jpg

Then I reinstalled the spider thingy that connects all the main caps together. Not really sure why it has it but anyway. Bottom end all buttoned up :)

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2013/02/100_1364_zpse217fbcc-1.jpg

Then I cleaned the bottom of the block and the oil pan and installed the new oil pan gasket. I put plenty of rtv sealant around the gasket so it shouldn't leak (1.5 tubes of black rtv to be exact. Probably overkill but screw it, I ain't doing this again anytime soon) Sorry no pics of oil pan and gasket, camera died at this point.

Tomorrow night's schedule:
-Install final brass freeze plug on rear of block
-Reinstall exhaust manifold and driver motor mount
-Clean up garage. It's a friggin mess!!!!!

Good progress tonight. Once again I was sick all weekend and didn't even go out of the house so I made up for it tonight :)

Installed that final brass freeze plug in the back of the block. Had to remove the flywheel first. Oh and always make some sort of lines or something so you'll know which way the flywheel goes.

My wicked paint marks.

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2013/03/100_1369_zps82a39351-1.jpg

The flywheel is actually pretty heavy. I was surprised but I guess that it is heavy because of the looong inline 6. Everything else on this mother is heavy, why not the flywheel eh?

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2013/03/100_1366_zpsab236e5c-1.jpg

Then I installed this last bad boy. It's a shame that no one will ever see it.

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2013/03/100_1367_zps87128787-1.jpg

Then to top it off, I reinstalled the exhuast manifold. BTW, the intake and exhaust are held on by the same bolts (huge washers grab both the intake and exhaust). So after the intake basically fell in my lap while trying to line up the exhaust, I just took both off and started with the exhaust and then put on the intake. Once again, you won't be able to see those purdy brass plugs. So sad.

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2013/03/100_1368_zps286679a5-1.jpg

Motor is DONE!!!!! She is ready to be put back in the jeep. But wait. We still have a motor mount lift, body lift, and track bar to install. Oh well. Maybe this weekend.

Not much of an update tonight. I did manage to clean up the garage, clean my tools, and put them away. That took the majority of the time.

I did however install the 1" motor mount lift. Super easy install. We may have to take these off when we put the motor back in. I'm not sure yet. We'll see.

Thanks man. I tried to talk Ricky into a stroker kit but that was alittle outta his range. It would've been a great time to do it.

The lift he has on it is a 4" unknown lift. The PO put the lift on and the dealer painted EVERYTHING underneath black. So it covered up any stickers or part numbers. The wheels he has American Racing 5 spokes and 33" Duratracs. I need to take a picture of it from the side so you can see. It is a very good looking jeep....when it's all together, lol

The only lift we are adding is a 1.25" body lift and a 1" motor mount lift. This summer we plan to go to URE since he has never been.

Some more progress today. Ricky came over so that made things go a LOT quicker.

First thing was to loosen the body mount bolts. Easy right?

2 minutes into working and this happens

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2013/03/100_1375_zpsc2a9367c-1.jpg

ARGH!!! Off to Lowes I go to buy real breaker bars.

Got back and loosened all the body mount bolts. Then I put on the 2 front brackets that the TJ grill sets on. Since it is a 1.25" lift, we needed these brackets to fill the gap where the rubber bump things are on the grill. There is a long flat piece of steel on the back side that goes down the side of the frame. I drilled a couple of holes and ran a self tapping bolt through.

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2013/03/100_1376_zpsa4fb57ac-1.jpg

Then we got the floor jack and some blocks of wood and jacked one side of the jeep up at a time, slide in the 1.25" body lift and installed the new bolts. Repeat other side and BAM! You just got lifted 1.25"

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2013/03/100_1378_zpsbb45d424-1.jpg

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2013/03/100_1380_zpsf1b56201-1.jpg

By the way, we found out that you have to jack the body up a LOT before you have enough space to slide in the body lift.It took us a few minutes to figure out hey, we're not lifting it high enough yet, lol.

Here are a couple of pics that sort of show the finshed product. Sorry for the crappy pictures.

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2013/03/100_1385_zpsf9e9fcd3-1.jpg

Then we started messing around with the new track bar and track bar mount. We still have to get some big drill bit before it's done. The new bracket is huge!

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2013/03/100_1384_zpsbb92c63e-1.jpg

Out with the old track bar and in with the new.

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2013/03/100_1383_zps346482d2-1.jpg

And then we test fitted his tube doors for fun. They look pretty cool.

Alright, let's get an update in here

Got the track bar bracket on tonight. (actually I worked on it some last night but who's counting, right?).

As you can see, I mocked up the bracket and drilled some pilot holes. Those pilots holes are 1/2" btw.

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2013/03/100_1392_zps28a4f1b3-1.jpg

I used this drill. I call her Big Momma :)

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2013/03/100_1393_zps8e376bc7-1.jpg

Once I got the pilot holes drilled, I removed the bracket to drill some even bigger holes for the crush sleeves that go inside the frame. That is a 7/8" drill bit. Wonder if Big Momma can handle such a large bit????

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2013/03/100_1394_zps6c6d7965-1.jpg

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2013/03/100_1395_zpsf1546053-1.jpg

Yep, she took it like a pro. Never grunted or strained. Here is a picture of the first hole after I drilled it out to 7/8"

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2013/03/100_1396_zps18037dec-1.jpg

I'll just be honest, drilling these big holes with the 7/8" bit wore me out. I can't keep up with Big Momma.

And here is the final bracket position and tightened down to specs.

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2013/03/100_1398_zpsd7abcb0a-1.jpg

I had a good night tonight with the progress. It just took a while and a lot of energy to drill those big holes.

Left to do:
-Install last bolt of opposite end of track bar. Probably going to have to drill out the hole a little bit.
-Final check for all bolts for track bar, body lift, and motor mount lift.
-Install motor back into Jeep.

I plan to call a couple of jeep buddies to come over Saturday so we can get this thing to running again! I really hope that it is running on Saturday night.

Progress was made today. Ricky and I pulled a 12 hour shift in the garage. I'm tired, lol.

It started well but when we went to line up the clutch and input in the transmission, we ran into a problem. The clutch wasn't lined up correctly and no auot parts store had any line up tools. So after 4 hours of wrestling with it and going to a couple parts stores, we decided to line it up ourselves. It worked!!!!!!! Don't ask me how but it did.

One other thing we had to do was to get a longer bar for the engine hoist/cherry picker. The one that came with it was way too short and we couldn't get the motor back into the jeep far enough. So my buddy Phillip works at a garage and said they had a longer one that would work. It was about 4 foot longer, lol. It worked too!!!!!

Here we are putting the motor in the first time.

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2013/03/100_1400_zps7cbbec48-1.jpg

We put the motor in and took it out 4-5 times before it finally lined up with the transmission and everything. We got it in and all the trans bolts tightened down.

Right after it went in for the last time (I hope).

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2013/03/100_1402_zpsf0b1639c-1.jpg

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2013/03/100_1401_zpsa1557d02-1.jpg

As you can see in the above pictures, we had just got it in and tightened down to the trans and motor mounts. No wires were reconnected and the point above.

Then we started pluging everything back up. This was the easist part thanks to me and Ricky labeling EVERY wire, nut, and bolt that we removed.

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2013/03/100_1403_zpsd71eacac-1.jpg

And this is where we ended the night (after 9 pm).

Left to do:
-Install surpentine belt.
-Install fan
-Install radiator, radiator shroud, and grill.

I have to thank Ricky, Rocky, Charles, Pa, and Phillip for all their help today. We wouldn't have got anything done without all you guys help.

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2013/03/100_1405_zps4a869c74-1.jpg

Seems like the list to completion never ends, lol.
-Install lower radiator hose
-Install sway bar
-Install plastic thingy on front that covers up sway bar
-Install factory air intake
-Button up interior around gear shift
-Fill with fluids
-Test drive

Almost there.......

Almost there. Last night I installed the lower radiator hose after I heated it with a lighter, installed the sway bar and the plastic cover thing, and installed thefactory intake. no pictures becasue it was all pretty simple.

Ricky is bringing by the fluids and some weather stripping to finish it up today.

criket
03-21-2013, 09:02 AM
I got the fluids in last night. Filled with oil and coolant. I finished buttoning up the interior around the trans tunnel. Hooked up the battery all the lights work! Yay!.

Tried to start it last night. nothing. no click. nothing. So I have it narrowed down to the battery, wiring from battery to starter/solenoid, connection on start/solenoid, or the kill safety switch for the clutch. The good news is that it's nothing mechanical, lol. Just electrical.

I'll have another go at it tonight. Wish me luck.

Guess what dude? The Jeep TJ RUNS!!!!!!

Oh my gosh it feels so good to hear it run like a top! Runs smooth, no oil leaks, no coolant leaks, and it shifts into grear and moves!!!! I couldn't get it into reverse but I think thats becasue the shifter hits the tub/tunnel shifter plate. It will go into 2nd and 4th but not reverse. I think it hits because of the 1" motor mount lift and it raised everything. We may have to trim it some. No biggie.

I'm in Dobson, NC. If you leave binghamton, ny, follow 81 south all the way until you hit 77 in southwest Virginia. Then head 77 south towards Charlotte, NC and I'm about 20 minutes south of the Virginia border once you cross it on 77 going into NC. So if you are goign to Charlotte, swing by my place. I'm only 4 miles from interstate 77.

Nice man congrats on getting her going! The shifter is easy though but with ant Jeep that to do list will continue to grow hahaha!

Yea man I'll let you know about Charlotte were may be flying but the idea of renting an RV came up last night so I'll keep you updated. Either way I'll be in NC by fall/beginning of winter so we will have to meet up..

Finished it up tonight. I had to trim the metal plate around the shifter to get it in reverse. I also had to trim the plastic console a tad but I'm going to let Ricky finish that. I'm afraid to keep trimming because you'll see it and I'm not sure what he wants to do.

So the jeep is in front of the garage, loaded up with all Ricky's old parts and tools, and he is coming to pick it up in the morning. I checked the ground and still no oil leaks or coolant leaks. I think I nailed this one guys

LOL my bad. I failed at taking pics this time. I was so excited to have it move out of the garage and hearing it run without any leaks, i forgot aout pictures. PLus it was 10 pm and dark.

Just talked to Ricky. We forgot to line up the steering wheel after the new track bar went on, lol. He said it's off by a good bit. Also, he thinks his water pump has a small leak. He said that he sees a drop of coolant every little bit. BUT he said that it is a LOT better than it was before. Before he was losing a ton of coolant and couldn't drive it 10 mins down the road before it over heated and he had to add more.

Everything else is great and he said that he is well pleased. That makes me feel like a job well done. :)

I would also like to remember the casualites that were suffered during this TJ build. A screw driver (bent like a boomerang), a ratcheting breaker bar (also bent like a boomerang), a creeper (wheel fell off first and then the plastic broke around wheel mount), and 2 ratchets (cheap craftsman tools, they stripped out).

They won't be forgotten.......until I get new ones to replace them:cool:

Ricky didn't have the drop arm for it. I was kinda wondering the same thing. But it's his TJ and his parts. I just put them on lol. HE did drive it yesterday and said that everything was doing great so he may be used to the bumpsteer, lol.

He did say that the coolant is leaking from the weep hole so it looks like he needs a new water pump.

I'll take a look at your TJ build.

Thanks for all the kind words guys.

Thanks pj

I was looking of the wk yesterday and starting jerking on the driver side spindle because the UCA looked a little funny on the ball joint. Sure enough, the uca is about to go. I could move the spindle and the uca ball joint moves and makes a clunk. And this is with the jeep on the ground. SO I guess I'll look into the JBA uca's.

criket

Upon further investigation, it seems that the uca's are ok. I lifted each front wheel and did my best to move it. I couldn't get them to move or make the clunk that I thought they were making the other day. Going to URE on April 13 so I'll put them through a good test then and see what happens.

On the WK I put on my season pass sticker for URE and a NC4x4 sticker (a local forum that I'm on).

Nothing much, just a little during and then after. We stayed moving most of the time.

The trails we did were: Wolf Den, Dickey Bell, Saw Mill, Slap Pile, and parts of Rocky Mountain Loop and Daniel.

All you guys that want to go to URE better go soon. Parts of Rocky Mountain Loop with Kodak Rock is shut down. Indian artifacts (duh, they are everywhere down here) and it doesn't look like it'll be opened back up. Just a matter of time before other trails at URE are shut down.

Rusty's rear track bar came in today. It's a lot beefier than I thought. Nice quality.

So parts/things to install or do this week (i hope):
-Rusty's track bar
-Brakes all the way around
-Engine oil
- Wipers

Then I'm going to start looking at tires. I need to replace one with a HUGE cut. I might as well get a whole set.

Well I got started on the WK tonight. All I did was change the oil and put on new wipers. I took some pictures but left the camera out in the garage. Also I managed to create a huge oil spill so I have kitty litter soaking it up now. My oil catch pan couldn't handle the flow from the oil pan.... go figure.....

The plan is to finish the brakes and track bar tomorrow night.

Oh and thanks 06jeep

Thanks guys!!! Feels good that have good brakes on it now. The fronts were way over halfway worn and the rears looked good. But brakes are cheap insurance so I changed them all. Stops great now.

The rear track bar made a big difference. I prob adjusted the new bar about 0.5"-0.75" longer than the stock one. The rear tires stick out pretty close to even now. Hopefully I can find a good deal on some new(er) tires soon. I think I plan to go with 255/75 or 245/75, I'm not sure. I want some more narrower tires so They won't get torn on the fenders.

I still got a lot of maintenance to do on this thing. I need to change tranny fluid, front diff, rear diff, t case, install 3.73 gears, new ball joints, and wash it, lol. I'll get it one day.

criket
06-02-2013, 02:11 PM
I adjusted the track bar inward 1 round. After a week of looking at the rear axle and how it was lined up, I came to the conclusion that I adjusted the track bar out a tad too much. The passenger tire was sticking out a little more than the driver side. So I adjusted it one round inward and looked over everything. It's about as close as I'm going to get it.

I also made a shock purchase today. Bought these off of a local guy. They came off his 4 door JK so the top mounting tab is different. BUT I think I can have someone to press out the tabs so the shocks will work on the rear of the WK. Also, these shocks are made for the 4 door JK so I believe the valving will be close to what I need.

These shocks are 6 months old, around 6K miles and I only paid $140 for the pair. I think I came out good. If they don't fit, I'll sell them for what I got in them.

Matt
06-02-2013, 02:43 PM
Oh they twist... but they're a PITA. Put a screwdriver though one of the holes, just the shock body for leverage, soak em down with PB blaster and go at it.

Oh ok, will do. I am Weak Sauce......

Matt
06-02-2013, 02:57 PM
sometimes a 6pt socket that just fits on the tabs and a breaker bar helps, if a screwdriver isn't enough leverage. Once they start twisting and the PB blaster works its way in there, they should spin out without too much trouble.

Just ordered some Husky floor liners for the front and rear of the WK. With all the rain that the east coast has had over the past several weeks, my driver door has leaked and my carpet and padding is molded and wet. So I'm pulling the carpet, bed lining the floor (maybe), and then putting these Husly floor liners in. And then I'll fix the leak, lol.

I still need to get those Fox shocks on.......

07-26-2013, 01:29 PM
^I will. Floor mats are suppose to arrive today. I've decided against bedlining the interior. I've read several accounts where people who did bedline the interior said that it stained and was very hard to clean. So I think I'll just ripp the carpet out and throw in the floor mats.

I've been looking for some seat covers for the front and rear seats. I needs them bad. Any recommendations?

criket
09-13-2013, 10:46 AM
Well I have the floor mats in the garage still in the box. I'm slower than fossilizing bones. I did wash the jeep over the weekend for the first time in ~2years. Needs wax badly.

Funny thing, as I washing it, I noticed a few scratches from offroading. I saw them, stood back and stared. All I could think was "needs more scratches". lol

criket

Took the Rola roof rack off yesterday. It was rusty, paint was peeling off, and hwen I took it off, it was full of water. So it's all bad news. Looks a bit different without the Rola rack but I like it. Now I can wash off all the rust from the roof that came from the rack.

If this thing don't sell before July 1, several buddies and I are going to URE. I may just be so pissed with my WK by then that I'll just flop her on her side for a picture. LOL jk, wife would kill me.
