Sals build thread got me starting to look at LED reverse lights that can be mounted in the rear bumper. So now I'm in the process of researching the options out there.

Any suggestions welcome.

Some that I have found thus far:

^^May look good with the Limited trim on the rear..

But I don't like how those will stick out far from the bumper. I like the flush mount look of Sal and AJ's because it looks OEM rather than a quick bolt-on job.

Not sure If I've seen clear ones around but the tail light ones I see all over the place even at lowes they have them. I think on your white bumper the clear LED's will look sweet and if you can get a metal grommet not the rubber one like I have you can paint it blue.

The ones i've found with the bezels all stick out 1/2" or so. Black grommet wouldn't be bad. worst case i can try painting it.

Ya they stick out but don't stick out that much maybe 1/4 at most

I don't even think they stick out 1/4" maybe 1/8" at the most. because that rubber bezzel or whatever, if installed correctly, (you know... taking your time and carefully etching away plastic as I did, Sal).... It will actually be pretty flush with the bumper. And the led case itself, when installed in the rubber ring, will be flush with it. It don't stick out that much, haha.

I am not sure what socket you guys have for your revers lights, but I have the 3157/3156 and these are the bulbs I recently got and have been very happier with them.

They have a 7w Q5 Cree LED with projector at the end and 12 5050 SMD LEDs rapping around it. It is like having headlights in the rear! :D they make them in a few different configurations and bulb types. I got mine off eBay but you can find them other places.

Ya AJ had some LED reverse lights I kept starring at them I think no matter what this is a good mod to add to the list for sure!

Those are cool too. Id like to do the auxiliary version in the bumper so I could run them on a separate circuit and use them when in park (and drive! Lol damn tailgaters)

I have aux revers lights on the rack that I can use too, but for day to day backing up these things are awesome and they only cost $40. Here's a night shot with a garage door about 15' behind me.

You are welcome guys! Every Jeep should have revers lights like these. And yes they just plug into the revers socket.

I just found some on ebay and placed an order. Can't wait. I like bright back up lights.

Nathan, what about the brake and signal for the stock housing units? I probably wont tap the HID reverses - at least not untill I finish at least upgrading the remaining bulbs to LEDs. There a specific vendor you were pleased with that you ordered from on Ebay or Amazon?

AJ I am not sure. I have aftermarket LED housings, but they use the stock revers wiring and socket. The seller on eBay that I bought from doesn't have any left, I bought his only set.

ah, I see - Well I'll be keeping an eye out. I know there are several vendors selling LED bulbs that fit in the stock sockets of the tails for brakes and signal - I was just curious if there were any particular brand or vendors people prefer out there.

I think im leaning towards the PT series lights that are in my first post. I just think the clear lens will look really clean on there...

But looking at the dimensions of the grommet, it looks like they'll stick out almost 1/2..

Yeah... after you read a certain number of threads they don't let you see anymore. Guess i've lurked there too much...

Back on topic though- i'd like mine to be almost flush as well so im a bit worried about the size of that grommet. I'd hate to spend all the money and cut up my bumper and have it stick out really far.

Sal-XK
02-27-2012, 08:07 PM
It looks like the grommet I have. When you push the light in it snaps into the grommet and seats the grommet into the bumper. I think this one will do the same all the ones I've seen look similar.

Matt

Mind snapping a few close up pics of yours? Maybe one showing how flush they are from a close-up side view?

Now that's what im talking about... they're maybe 1/4" out and look OEM. I think a thick 1/2" grommet won't look as clean... ugh

See if this is better

Ok looking back at those dimensions.... I think the grommet may actually have a slit in the 1/2" outer thickness that sits in the cutout. The hole size is 2.5"x6.76" whereas that inner flange is 2.125"x6.5".

Maybe i'll order one of the flange/wiring kits ($7) and see how it looks when i get it.

Sal, I don't understand what you are measuring or showing us here.

Lekmed, and i and some others have put in rear tail lights. I use the left one on the
indicator side to light up when I have my fogs on. Kinda Euro style. Problem is when
I have the fogs on, people tell me one of the lights on the bumper is out. Well, that
light is not out, it isn't on. That confuses people. Both lights are on when the parking
lights come on.

I like the high power rear lights, I have wanted to add some but could not figure out
how to mount them without tearing them up when I drag the back end.

All I will have to do is replace the lights and then switch it.

Don, I'm showing matt how far the lights stick out from the bumper. Mine are tied in with the factory harness so they operate with the normal controls.

Ordered a grommet for the wesbar light last night... $6. Figure its worth it to find out how far that particular light will stick out before ordering the whole setup.

Did you ever go with this project? I find myself down in your area every-so-often if you'd like to see my bumper LEDs (http://www.jeepcommander.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7807&highlight=rear+fog). In that project from 2009, Adam used the clear lenses (with red LEDs) on his silver XK. Damn, I keep changing this post. Anyway, here is a link for some chrome bezels (http://www.ebay.com/itm/6-Oval-Trim-Ring-Maxxima-M50605-Truck-Trailer-Bezel-/350311062858?pt=Motors_RV_Trailer_Camper_Parts_Acc essories&vxp=mtr&hash=item51902a9d4a#ht_4302wt_903) to cover the rubber grommets.

BTW Matt, if you PM me your phone #, I'll give you a call if I'm around your way this weekend.
