Camp Commander 2010 is officially underway in Silverton Colorado. Janet & I arrived last night and spent the remainder of the evening setting up camp.

We left Peoria Arizona at 8:30 am where the temperature was 105 degrees. It took up about 10 hours to make the drive to Silverton but we did stop at a couple of tourist spots along the way.

Our first stop was Dinosaur Tracks where you can pay one of the local Navajo Indians to show you the tracks. I am sure some of the things he showed us were nothing but he had great stories and it only cost me $10

Last year we drove past Four Corners and told ourselves we would stop on the way home only to take a different route and miss the monument.

This year we stopped...

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2010/07/DSCI0043-4.jpg

But they were closed for construction. The attendant told me that we could not see the marker due to the construction but if I wanted to pay $3.00 I could drive up to the fence and look through it... I saved the $3.00

And then it was on to Colorado:

And Elephant Feet Rocks:

Janet wanted to stop at this lake and look for a GeoCache, and of course we stopped.

We arrived in camp around 6:00 pm and set up camp, most of it actually got set up the next morning when Roy & Brian came over and gave me a hand.

The new section of Red Mountain RV park is very nice, not only do they have full hook-ups but they have 8 private bathrooms with showers, a club house with free wi-fi (slowest in the world I think) and a Hot Tub.

DAY ONE / PICAYNE & PLACER GULCHES:

17 MILES OF OFF-ROAD DRIVING.

Day One got off to a slower start but that is expected when you consider that everyone just gone done driving a full day just to get here. We set out for a couple of trails we have not done before and thanks to Roy and Mary who scouted out the area we had a good run over Picayne & Placer Gulches which was a easy high shelf road with great views.

We did stop and walk around an old mining camp:

Just two Commanders is camp today so we didn't really take too many with the Commanders. Tomorrow is another day and we will be hitting the trail with at least four Comanders.

I'm leaving first thing in the morning. Will need to hear what time to meet y'all at the turn-off for Black Bear on Tuesday (assuming that's still the plan).

Finally got the XK Side Guards finished up today, so there'll be extra bells and whistles on the rig!

DAY TWO / CLEAR LAKE & STONY PASS:

CLEAR LAKE: Off Road Miles = 16.2 / Total Miles Driven: 23.2
STONY PASS: Off Road Miles = 37.2 / Total Miles Driven: 60.4

Today we did two runs... The first run of the day was to Clear Lake (a repeat run from the prior year) and there were only two Commanders on this run. We did not want to sit around in camp and wait for people to show up :)

That should be fine. Looking forward to it. I'll be waiting at the highway turnoff. Will have one Grand Cherokee with me -- Russ of 4xGuard -- and the donated tail-light guards.

You should have my phone number if you need it, I think.

This fall my wife and I are taking a driving trip out west to Grand Canyon and where ever else we end up. No telling where yet.

Thanks for the pics. Have a good time!

Hello all this is my first post in here and first time to know about this new XK forum via Huey thread jeepcommander.com

Definitely nice trip in a nice area, looks very similar to the nature around where I live except that its greener there.

I'm not sure who is Knappster but I'm sure that this is Jon's XK, what is that thing on the left rear glass? looks like an antenna!

Knappster & Jon are one and the same, Changed my name over here! (Knappster's is our GeoCaching name) The thing on the glass is a "Sticky Pod" camera mount (got it from Phunkeydude), I have a video camera on the front and back for most of the trails and will upload the video when I get home.

Welcome to the site!

How is the Sticky Pod working out for you Jon? Looks like your having a great time. I was going to sneek out there this week with my son and the new Ruby but, turns out he is swimming in the District semi finals on Thursday and the Finals on Saturday so that goofed it up for me again another year. How has the weather been? I'm sure a lot cooler than the 116 in Phoenix and the 102 in Albuquerque. Happy Trails. Say hello to everyone for me! Next year plan the Colorado trip in August so its clear of my kids swim team meets in June and July! LOL

Day Five: Today was a very interesting day! The three J's (ped4599, Rocky Mountain Canary & Knappster) headed out to run Imogene and Ophir and were pleasantly surprised to see El Cid and his family at the trail head.

I took lots of pictures but the day ran real late and it is now 11:37 Colorado time so pictures will have to wait until tomorrow.

We had a scare this afternoon when we lost one of our members to a landslide... ped4599 started his return to camp before the rest of us so he hit the trail about and hour and a half before us. While in Telluride it started to rain real heavy so Rocky Mountain Canary and I decided to forgo the pass and take the paved road back to camp. When we got back to camp ped4599 was not there and at 9:30 we decided to go out and find him.

We got about a mile up Ophir Pass to see if we could find ped4599 when we found the road had been washed out and at least 40 feet of road was gone. What we didn't know was that ped4599 had completed 95% of that trail before he ran across the section of road that was washed out and so he had to backtrack to Telluride and come home the long way (which is the route Rocky Mountain Canary & I had taken).

Anyway... everyone is home safe and tired and the rest of the story will have to wait.

See if any of your contributors have anything left over for Flagpole. (but probably not after my first comment)

Are any of the Commanders Stock? If so are they able to negotiate all the trails the others have been on>
HT

Most of the Commanders do have a basic lift but Consolidation's XK is stock and he did everything the rest of us did on the days he ran.

Knappster is right...mine is stock. I ran all of the trails on the days we ran, including Black Bear and did just fine (sans an occasional test of the skid plates). I did have some unrelated tire issues, though...including an embarrassing moment of trying to show off, running over a piece of metal, and busting a two day old tire! Doh!

DAY FIVE / YANKEE BOY BASIN & IMOGENE PASS:

Off Road Miles = 31.1 / Total Miles Driven: 136.1

Sorry it took so long to get these pictures up but we were having too much fun driving to stop and mess with posting pictures (the web access here is sooooooooooo slow).

Day five was very cloudy, there were some times as you will see in the pictures that we could barely see in front of us.

The photos are great. I look forward to them each day.

Consolidation thanks for the information. As I'm running stock myself it's good to know you are able to go where the others go..Do you have aftermarket skid plates?
I'll be there August 1st after everyone is gone so I guess I'll be running the trails by myself...Where do I get information about the locations of all the trails you have run and how do you find them? GPS?
I'm still running the stock Forteras and have 39,600 on them. Thinking about new tires before I go but since I spend most of my time on the road I don't want an aggressive noisy tire..Been debating on Cooper Discoverer ATR's. They've worked out well on one of my Cherokees.
Have fun, keep the photo coming.

How's cell service out there? I have ATT.

I have a book of trails (Guide to Colorado Backroads & 4-wheel Drive Trails). You can pick it up in most any book store or at the local shops.

How's cell service out there? I have ATT.

Cell will work in town but you will not have service on the trails. Good news is you will have so many others on the trail that if you need help it is not far away.

On the last day of camp RMC, consolidation and Knappster took it easy and gave the trails a rest. we all spent the day getting our stuff wrapped up for the trip home tomorrow and walking the streets of Silverton picking up those last minute items.

We gathered in our camp for one last dinner together and wrapped up Camp Commander 2010.

Meanwhile, I'm still in the area, continuing to test products -- got a modification to the swaylink skids to make as a result of the ride up Poughkeepsie Gulch.

As soon as I can I'll also post something more about what deal 4xGuard will be offering if folks want to beta-test the new Side Guards.

...Consolidation thanks for the information. As I'm running stock myself it's good to know you are able to go where the others go..Do you have aftermarket skid plates?

I have the full set of skids from the factory. I hate having to use them but it is comforting knowing they are there.

...Where do I get information about the locations of all the trails you have run and how do you find them? GPS?

Like Knappster, I have a similar book titled Colorado Byways. I think I saw similar books for sale in Silverton in a few stores. Fetch's has a good selection of books and trail stickers.

I'm still running the stock Forteras and have 39,600 on them. Thinking about new tires ...Been debating on Cooper Discoverer ATR's.
My Fortera's had 27,000 miles. Two were leaking air. My third tire got punctured on Ophir Pass. Knappster and WanderingTS helped me do a quick fix on the trail. The next day I ran to Big-O in Durango and got a set of Cooper Discover LSX's. I didn't want an aggressive tread as my Jeep is my commuter car. I really wanted Michelin's but didn't want to lose another day waiting for them to come in. Although I am not familiar with the Cooper brand, I am pleased with their performance both on and off road.

How's cell service out there? I have ATT.

I used to have ATT and switched to Verizon because I got better reception in the mountains. We now have Verizon internet. My wife did internet work the entire trip up to Silverton without loosing a signal. Pretty amazing...

Thanks for all the information...I'll be running stock Forteras with 39,700 miles on them. I don't want an agressive tire either. I decided to go for one more trip with the factory tires then switch to Cooper CTS this fall instead of the ATR's Did you puncture your tire on a rock? Were the others leaking as a result of trail damage/puncture?...I'm more interestered in scenery than I am challenging my Commander..Nice moderate trails with sock knocking views of the mountains. I'm old and changing a tire on the edge of a cliff doesn't sound like fun.

Just a reminder if you haven't done so already. Check over your rigs for trail damage.

My rear diff. cover was leaking really bad. I knew it got pulled a little, most likely on 'The Steps' as there was lots of contact underneath going down that part; but it didn't start leaking until yesterday. Gave me an opportunity to change out the lube.

How I wanted to go with you all this past Summer and was unable due to scheduling conflicts with the kids summer activities but I did make it up there this past weekend and stayed in Silverton in the cabins at your favorite Red Mountain camp grounds. Amy and Jim say hello to all the Commander Club and you Jon. So in looking at the photos from July, there was still a great amount of snow and lots of colorful flowers. Well in the Fall there was no snow to be found and of course the colors had changed to shades of gold, brown and dark green. Here is a couple non Commander pics:
