I will. I'm handicap so unable to do myself. I wish I could do it myself, because I never really happy when someone else does stuff to the XK. But life is life. Besides the mud stains I had from my last outing & the fact that it is the main car for my wife & I with a 3 month old & 3 yro it got really DIRTY it was bugging me a lot

Well the last of the shopping spree has arrived, picked up the new rear driveshaft yesterday.

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2012/08/DSC_0256-1.jpg

Machined adaptor plate to the transfer case, 1350 equipped double cardon, enclosed slip joint, and a 1410 uni for the differential end.

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2012/08/DSC_0258-1.jpg

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2012/08/DSC_0257-1.jpg

No more staked unis as per factory, and cheaper than a factory Jeep replacement as well.

That should fix it :D

Now to head to the shed and fit it!!!

Did you save any weight with the new one?

07JeepXK
08-24-2012, 06:02 PM
That is awesome! Where did you have that made? Any chance of getting another one made and sent this way??

valpacer
08-26-2012, 07:05 PM
If by save you mean quadruple the weight Sal, then yes! It's heavy, built for crawling, the Uni's are usually used on trucks, so they should last. Factory shaft is aluminum, this is 1/4" steel :O!!

You could ship one but I would hate to see the cost! There was a bloke who got one made in the states, it's was just a straight non-cardon style, but was under 500 bucks.

If you staying with s 2 inch lift you really shouldn't need an upgraded front driveshaft. The angle never changes. And our front driveshafts aren't that expensive. Now with a 4 inch lift that's a different story due to the fro t diff drop down brackets.

Matt
08-27-2012, 03:32 AM
The upgraded shaft was the same price or cheaper than the OEM shaft and had zerk fittings that would allow me to service it. Has nothing to do with which lift I'm running.

And yeah, regardless the SL is in my future.

Next week he is going to fab up a plate to replace the plasic one that is covering those same lines under the jeep. The plasic cover has cracks in it now, so time to make a stronger cover.

Hopefully by the end of the year he will have the bumpers done for me.

Unfortunately one of my mods is going to be a new steering rack. Mine just started leaking pretty bad where the steering wheel linkage goes into the rack. It's not something that can be fixed. But I got over 116,000 on the OEM rack so can't complain

Core XK

07JeepXK
09-20-2012, 08:03 AM
Hell yea it is and the worst part is I don't even think I can get a reman unit. I read something a while back on one of the forums that there is a difference between the GC and Commander rack and when you buy a reman unit you don't know who've vehicle it came out of. Easy to replace but that's stealing money away from another project on the XK

07JeepXK

There is some discussion on the facebooks about Dave's Offroad in PA making some upgraded parts for the XK/WK steering assembly. I'm not totally sure what all it entails, or when it will be ready though..

Matt
09-20-2012, 02:23 PM
Probably just beefier inner & outer tie rods, which won't help the steering rack at all. Would love to replace the rack & pinion with a steering box setup; a lot more options for beefing up components to stand up to the angles of our lifts.

07JeepXK
09-20-2012, 05:30 PM
I'm having two problems with my steering rack right now and neither of them are the inner or outer tie rods. I'm leaking fluid where the steering wheel linkage goes into the steering rack. My buddy jay had the same problem with his WK and they don't make replacement parts to fix that. I also have a problem with the internal part of the steering rack where the inner tie rod screws into the drivers side. My only option is to pull the rack and install a new one. No big deal. It will only take me about 2 hours to do.

So if it just peels right off does that mean it would come right off at a do it your self car wash??

No I already sprayed the hell out of it at the do it yourself wash. My buddy has his whole TJ plasti-dip'd LOL and he only got minor scratches off road and just sprayed that spit and it blends in with the rest of the paint.

Its actually very durable. In order to peel it you have to get a razor blade or something and start a corner, and then you pull the rest off. There's a ton of youtubte videos of some crazy crap with this stuff....

Core XK
09-22-2012, 06:35 AM
All in all, if I can get a nice smooth powder coat finish for $5.99 a can....AND I can take it off in 3 minutes if I don't like it...count me in! :)

Matt
09-22-2012, 06:35 AM
So if it just peels right off does that mean it would come right off at a do it your self car wash??

i've always wondered how well it actually "bonds" if it can be peeled off....

Core XK
09-22-2012, 06:42 AM
You can check out my gas cap tomorrow LOL

I think the trick is to do a "brushing" of 50% transparency for your first coat (they say this is what makes it bond to the surface) and then you continue with 3-4 light coats and it turns out a nice dark black finish.

Worked perfectly on the gas cap.

Matt
09-22-2012, 06:53 AM
Regardless of the process, it's still a layer that can be "peeled" off without damaging the surface its covering. So there's no mechanical or chemical bond happening there.

That is true but in my opinion it is durable enough for the everyday elements, and if it did come to a scratch it is as easy just spraying that one spot. For a professional paint job thats not the case lol

I agree. It's just "interesting" to me as to how it works. Like how it can be peeled off, but temperature fluctuations (specifically on wheels) doesn't cause it to "loosen" and fall off especially with the forces at high speeds. Or how wind shear doesn't cause it to peel off that guys hood you posted. Yet, all you need to do is get a corner up and peel it off? lol mind boggling

No I do understand what you mean and I definitely do not know enough about it to explain how the **** works LOL but from others who have had it on their wheels for 2 years + and they claimed the only thing they did was respray a few spots from rock nicks / offroad then it's worth a shot for me to try out.

I left for Charlotte stopped to wash the jeep on the way out that took forever. Stopped for gas 1hr later set the pump ran inside for coffee and the pump never shut off  I leaked about 3 gallons on the floor but the jeep stunk real bad. Found another car wash 30mn later I was getting stick at this point my lips were numb. I guess I still had some mud stuck in there that soaked up the fuel and kept it from evaporating.

Then my hotel was so nasty I had to check out and wash all my clean clothes again because they smelled just from being left in the room overnight. My eyes were watering for hours after I left that place. I didn't even know hotels still had smoking rooms but they do because I got one with extra room mates the roaches allowed me to spend the night with them LOL I complained to my work they got my roomed switched but when I got back there the power was off in the hotel WTF then they fumigated for the roaches they said didn't have LOL so they smelled real good. Transmission shop said my oil pan was leaking because it seems to have "hit something". Never thought I actually knicked anything last year at uwharrie, but I guess I was wrong. They are agoing to reshape the oil pan and add a new gasket make it all work. Relatively cheap for new fluid, filters and gasket its just under 140, seemed fair to me.

Looks like if I am planning on wheeling soon, I will need a tranny skid from SA. But for now, no wheeling is in my future for right now with the baby here. Maybe time to upgrade my UCA's soon but we'll see.

I'm going to swap out the Aussie locker for a powertrax no slip which is much quieter around corners. The Aussie locker ratchets around corners and makes a loud clicking sound. I don't like it, it's way to loud for a daily driver.

They both fully lock the rear and work the same. The no slip is more expensive though because its s better design.

Yup the quote was for cutting out and welding in the whole section under the door as well as fixing the door. They said they wouldn't just pull the dent out of the rocker because it weakens the metal to much. Either way I wasn't going for that but like I said you can barely see it most people don't unless I point it out.

Made it home from the Jambo, broke another front drive shaft on the way home, cooked by heat and no grease left till it seized! Didnt have that good a weekend, atfer the mud on friday had no rear ELSD, and after saturday no front ELSD either! On the plus side, when wheeling with the open rear the front held up being bounced, smashed an generally right footed, no noises, no vibes, and no breakages on the trail from the UCA's, CV's or the front driveshaft. Limit straps kept the front end in place! Couldnt run the superhard tracks as planned, copped some flack from the solid axle boys on the B tracks, but had a great time with the guys from the Brisbane Jeep Club.

Didnt win any trophies, but turned some heads! In the grand section the only thing close was a WJ on 33's and a 3.5" LA kit. Had to replace his front left spring on the track after he floored it through the mud and jumped out the other end! Most of the ther grands were near stock tourers. There were some mad comp Jeeps there, couple of rollovers with them too!

Ill get some more pics and vids up in the pics section soon!

Well, I'm a little late with this update, but here goes...

On Monday I was at the dealership for some front differential service. The right side seal was leaking, so I had that replaced. Also, 2 out of 3 bushings for the diff needed to be replaced as well. While all this was being done, I talked to the tech about the "Service 4WD" EVIC message that I get on occasion (for years now). Well, I had him replace the solenoid AND wiring harness. He said the wiring harness looked a bit worn. Anyway, no more leak, no more knocking from the diff, and no more warning messages!!!! I had the C1417 DTC in the past, but no more!

I also had the serpentine belt replaced, coolant drained and filled, and PCV valve replaced while I was there. Too lazy to do it myself, and those 3 items were still original in the Jeep with 113,000 miles on the ticker.

Not just today but over the weekend I put it up on the lift and took care of a few things: Trans filters and fluid change (and it still makes the whining noise in gear  ) 16 new spark plugs, air filter, and I finally replaced the inner tie-rod that I have had the part sitting in under the seat for two years now. The tie-rod was a very easy repair by the way. I had also found some stainless steel cable ties that I used to replace the crimp-clamp on the boot.

I also finally got out the hydraulic ram to try and straighten out the lower radiator support that I bent on a tree stump hidden under the mud about four years ago. It's better now but still not quite right.

The whole weekend I kept looking at the shredded front diff mount (the rear one - common failure) and not feeling enthused about trying to drop the diff to replace it, I ended up dropping the Jeep off at the dealer today and they took care of it for me. They billed me for 3.5 hours, but I'm sure it saved me some busted knuckles and a lot of frustration. I have had that part under the seat with the new tie rod for about a year now...

Today was kind of a busy day for the XK and I.. started by rotating the tires, backs came straight forward fronts went to opposite corners, tires are non directional so this seemed the best idea. I also did the passenger side pinch weld mod or I should say re-did since the guy tried doing it before me just sludge hammered the s**t out of it!! Did the best I could since it was a mangled mess, no more rubbing which is the that matters. Greased up the caliper slides to prepare for winter/off roading. Also finally got around to cover the plastic rocker mounting holes with black grip tape and painting the rest with black bedliner. Came out really nice, I didnt like the green grip tape so went with the black and Im glad I did. My CB also came in Friday so I put that in the Jeep as well, just need to figure out how to mount antenna down the road. Here are some shots of todays events, didnt take pics of the pinch weld but here is the rest..

I totally forgot that you have the 4 inch lift. So your front drive shaft angles downward from the transfer case due to the drop down brackets on the front differential. That is added stress on the oem shaft.

On Monday, I sheared all five studs off the front passenger wheel doing 75mph on the freeway! The wheel stayed on--just barely--spinning around the disk rotor til we came to a stop. The wife was driving and did a great job holding things together.

What caused it, I don't have a clue. It was pretty sudden (a few seconds). Maybe the new wheels?

Ordered some new headlight bulbs. Mine seem to be getting worse with age, more dull yellow. Did some looking around and went with the following, based on reviews I had seen.

Went with Phillips Crystal Vision Hi's and Lo's. Also went ahead and ordered fogs too, Optilux Yellow Xenon. Will report back with a comparison picture. Not bad doing all six bulbs shipped for 70 bucks.

Matt

That's definitely not cool!!!

I've never heard of a properly installed wheel shearing off like that. It's normally due to not being seated on the hub properly, using the wrong lug nuts or not being torqued down.

Are you using hubcentric rings?

I'm still not sure what the cause was. The lug nuts were torqued down. There was no vibration, shimmy, or out of balance feel before it started to go, then, all of a sudden it felt like we had a blowout. Then it got worse!

All I can think is that that wheel has been on and off a lot with all the CV replacements, tire and wheel changes, rotations, etc. The lug nuts were getting pretty stiff the last time they went on. Are OEM studs insufficient for the much larger/heavier rubber? These 33 KM2's must weigh twice what the OEM 29 inchers weighed.

07JeepXK
11-02-2012, 10:44 AM
Oem studs are fine for larger tires. My 33 inch MTR's are very heavy along with my steel wheels and no problems here. Was that the original hub/wheel bearing assembly? If not what brand was the original replaced with

Oem studs are fine for larger tires. My 33 inch MTR's are very heavy along with my steel wheels and no problems here. Was that the original hub/wheel bearing assembly? If not what brand was the original replaced with

It was the original assembly.

Pretty productive day.

Fixed the rubbing from the Belly Guard. Due to the belly guard connecting with the suspension skid it would have needed quite a few washers for those bolts to actually give clearance from the cat. converter; so we went to home depot and bought (2) nuts for each bolt and it gave it plenty of clearance for when I smack it again.

My tire was leaking from the middle of the tread line from a 2" screw. Pulled it out and plugged the hole so thats all taken care of as well.

Trimmed the bolts on the hitch so the spare would clear. It did clear the bolts but the tire is just too large to clear that metal bracket that is right near the track bar. My step-dad wouldn't take no for an answer, so he rigged some plywood and made a mount so the tire is very snug and no longer moves under there. Drove 45 mins back home and no noise like before so the rig will work until I eventually throw it on the roof w/ the rola roof rack.

Good day :)

EDIT: Discovered multiple tree scratches on the XK!!! it will need a buff job soon lol *cough andrew*

Honestly its all in the type of wax you use, I use Meguiars Gold Class, Mothers California on a regular basis as these are easy on easy off waxes. Now when you use ones like Zymol, which is awesome and other "cleaner" waxes it takes a lot more to apply and remove. I use cleaner waxes every quarter, this will remove most of your "fallout" and surface rust, which appears only on white, AND most of the time depending on where you park, how often you clean etc will lessen the need to clar bar.

Matt
12-04-2012, 01:36 PM
I use Mothers Synwax (liquid). Goes on/off easy... I do it all by hand though.

Never clay barred...

06JeepXKHEMI
12-04-2012, 02:01 PM
Ok, I did it by hand today to, with my orbital I could do it even faster but again thisis for a quick wax. When I do a detail with the orbital I will literally take 5-10 minutes a panel. I have an old school 18lbs orbital that with the right wax/polish/glaze even can remove swirls and light scratches.
I also wax the entire vehicle in the shade or in garage before removing so that by the time you are done you can start removing and everything will be dry. Also, dont go in circular motion this causes swirls, go the direction the panel was painted, mostly front to back. With these "quick" waxes there is no need to push hard or keep going over where you already applied, I just shoot throw it.

Bad as in I can take the sway bar and jiggle it up and down.... as if the bushings compressed so theres now clearance.

My stock ones really weren't bad. My end links were beat up so I figured i'd replace the bushings at the same time because they're cheap & easy. I don't know if I got a bad batch or if moog just uses too soft of a compound for this application, so i'm throwing OEM ones back in since they seemed to be holding up great.

The last time I had that done my TPMS kept lighting up. I took it back and they re-set it. Apparently this needs to be done with every tire rotation as the Jeep can't find the sensors without a re-set. At least that's what I was told. Never happened before. It did cure the problem though. I've driven several hundred miles since then.

The jeep automatically resets the sensor locations. HOWEVER, it must be driven for 10+ minutes at a speed above 30 mph continuously. So if you happen to only drive short distances and stop often, the sensors may have needed to be manually reset since you never met the requirements for them to relearn.

I don't have TPMS sensors. When I bought the new wheels and tires I decided to just use regular valve stems and set my Flashpaq on off road setting so the TPMS is completely disabled.

If I ever spring for a Flashpaq turning off the TPMS will be my first tweak. Apparently my Commander wasn't smart enough to re-set on it's own. I drove about 30 miles after the rotation at speeds up to 55 and no slower than 45 and the next day is when the light came on.

Last day of 2012 and I spent most of the day trying to track down a popping sound in the front of my jeep. It's driving me nuts! Thought it would go away when i replaced all my control arms... nope. Almost sounds like the engine carriage shifting but all those bolts are snug. Going to change my diff fluid in case its internal in there, and check my new front driveshaft.

criket
12-31-2012, 07:42 PM
I'm not sure if you have wheel spacers or not but mine made a poping noise. I know it sounds crazy but all of a sudden one day, my front end started making this pop sound with a slight vibration and it got louder with speed. Put it on the lift at the local shop an dinitially we thought it was the t case. But we went with the simplest thing first. We impacted the spacers down as tight as we could. after a test drive, the pop sound and slight vibration it had was gone. Now about every 6 months or so, I impact them again just for good measure.

Another thing to check while you're in your front diff, is the play in the ring and pinion. Hopefully all the hard wheeling you do hasn't wore them any or any of the ring/pinion bearings.

Matt
12-31-2012, 07:56 PM
No wheel spacers. And I've had pretty much every part of my friend end apart/re-torqued when i replaced my UCAs and LCAs last week.

It makes no noises at speed. Only turning into my driveway and such. Was worried it was the steering rack but I'm able to turn the wheel lock-to-lock while not moving (a lot of stress on the rack) and can't replicate the sound. Also ruled out pinion bearing wear with cycling suspension stress (power brake F/R & slight rolling) and can't get it to make the sound.

It's a really weird sound.... I've dealt with and tracked down a lot of suspension noises in my day, both on my vehicles and at the shop, and this ones got me a bit stumped. I'll have to get one of my buddies to drive the vehicle while I stand on the outside and try to track down where the noise is coming from.
