On the bumper bro as long as you're happy how it looks that's all that matters design with your soul I say LOL. I cut a lot out but I liked the square look and needed maximum clearance for when I do stupid stuff LOL On the lights my buddy has the one from rigid industries and that thing was just sick. I couldn't believe how much light it put out.

Yea I agree on the bumper, I like the look yours has but would like it to be more enclosed in a way. Plus I wont be painting afterwards and want a clean look... I definitely want to do the bumper and lights thats for sure!!

So Im no longer rubbing on the pinch weld, not even close, but I am rubbing the inner fender well. If I didnt need those thing Id be ripping them out as we speak!!! Adam, I know you used that rubber sheet you gave me that I used for enclosing my intake, but how did you attach it to stay in place?

I still have my plastic inner fender well liners. I just used a heat gun to reshape them. Never got a chance to install the rubber that I bought due to the move. Figuring out how to attach it was something I was going to figure out at the time of install.

06JeepXKHEMI
11-03-2012, 12:53 PM
Im rubbing by the transmission lines on that part of liner.. Wonder if I can cut the liner, glue the rubber to remaining liner and screw the bottom in..?

07JeepXK
11-03-2012, 02:31 PM
Transmission lines?? Are you talking about the rear AC and Heater lines on the passenger side?

pjmjr508
11-05-2012, 05:48 PM
If that is where your talking about, I have a plate I am testing to get all the bugs worked out to protect those lines. Once I have all the bugs worked out will be getting to jon for the rest of us with XK's.

06JeepXKHEMI
11-05-2012, 06:48 PM
Yes that is where I was referring to.. I think Im going to heat it up and mold it back since its catching the liner not the lines, but I would definitely be purchasing that when its available

Did some local wheeling trails Sunday am. The arent exactly legal but no one really cares as long as you arent being an idiot. Its really mud lots of deep thick mud puddles, ruts and hill climbs, lots of fun!! Love my XK in the mud except for my tires, man these things suck! One more month Ill have those MTRs!! As far as damage goes this is where my tires hurt me. Several times I lost traction sliding into trees and tree limbs, causing some deep scratches down the length of the XK and nice scratches in the bumper. I broke the plastic trim surrounding the glass of passenger mirror as well. I couldnt get any pics of damage, wouldnt come out in pics for some reason and no action pics, didnt want to be down there for to long, the HEMI was screaming and brought some attention, so decided to leave.. So, I had access to a high speed buffer, medium grit compound, polish and of course my wax and went to work! About 5 hrs of high speeding, 1 trip around with medium grit compound, 2x polishing and nice heavy coat of wax she's looking better than ever! I did a how-to video, but somehow its not on the camera? Watched it yesterday but, oh well, sorry guys! Here are some before and after shots..

06jeep,
If possible could you take some pics of catch can install?

Yes of course! Its probably one of the easiest things you can do, just find a spot you like it mounted to. There are a lot of threads throughout the internet Ive been reading for ideas, seems like the easiest is an L bracket from strut bolt. It will be done this afternoon as well as exhaust painted with a few coats..

06JeepXKHEMI
12-17-2012, 08:41 AM
Busy day Saturday, cleaned my TB, painted my exhaust and did some other things under the hood Ive been wanting to do. Lets start with the TB, I used rubbing alcohol, tooth brush, q-tips and towels to clean it, was pretty dirty. Didnt take to long bout 10-15 minutes. Heres before and after:
https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2012/12/WP_000593_zpsd7312aaf-1.jpg?t=1355756499
Now you know why I got a catch can!
https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2012/12/WP_000594_zpscd0766ac-1.jpg?t=1355756506

Next, I always hated seeing the wires for the coils and injectors exposed, thought it looked tacky so I taped them all up with black electrical tape, excuse the dirty engine bay thats this weeks project!

Finally I painted the exhaust with VHT header paint, matt black came out great. Some pics paint was still wet but you'll get the idea..

The exhaust is sounding even better as it breaks in Ill do another video soon..
Also I was going to install catch can but I dont have the right bracket for it, so I will complete that this week and post the install for that, as you can see on my TB I need one badly!

I love my JBA UCA's. I thought when I first purchased them that the slight clearance issue at full drop would be a problem. No problems here though. If they do make a new version i'll definitely get a set for the next XK.

06JeepXKHEMI
12-20-2012, 04:47 PM
Matt, Adam and I were discussing air pressure in these they are load range E, what should I run in these?!?

Matt
12-20-2012, 05:17 PM
For a LT265/70/17, at 35 PSI the tires will handle a load equivalent to your max GAWR (so you'll overload the axle before the tires).

I'd run 35 for daily driving, and bump them up to 40 for heavy loads, towing, etc.

07JeepXK
12-20-2012, 06:15 PM
Matt...Even with them being Load Range E with a max psi of 80?? My 285's are Load range D with 65 psi max and I run 36 psi and its working out great for me. I would of figured he would need to run closer to 40.

Matt
12-20-2012, 06:29 PM
Yeah, even with load E. All LT tires fall under the load capacity requirements of the TRA. The only difference between D and E is the extra capacity on the high end. Anywhere between 35-40 is good for those and isn't going to make a huge difference in treadwear. I'd keep it closer to 35 for DD to absorb more bumps to help with ride quality and reduce wear on the suspension components. For a long highway trip, put them up to 38-40 for ~.25 mpg increase :D

Going on at 10, Ill post pics this afternoon. Washed and waxed her yesterday only to get snow/sleet last night while driving and let me tell you I sliding all over the place with these BFGs, definitely time to go. Ill set them at 37 for the trip to Rochester and see how it feels

07JeepXK
12-21-2012, 07:51 AM
Thats because BFG AT's suck in the snow!! The new MT/R's will be night and day difference

06JeepXKHEMI
12-21-2012, 08:02 AM
I hate these BFGs!! Headed out now, report back in a bit

duneslider
12-21-2012, 10:19 AM
I too have to be honest, the BFG AT is a terrible tire in almost every situation. People have been loving it forever but I just don't get it. I have had a set on a YJ, Cherokee, and on my Ram truck. I have hated them all three times. My Toyo MT's are better for every situation except street driving. I found the BFG's bad in sand, mud, wet roads, snow, ice, grass. Surprisingly, the BFG MT's perform better in all those situations and are pretty decent on the road. I haven't had the New MTR's but I currently have Duratrac's on my JK and love them. I think you will like the MTR, I keep hearing lots of good things from everyone.

Matt

Misery loves company. So many people buy them because everyone "swears by them", then they're in denial and really wish they didnt suck, so they tell other people how great the tires are when they truly aren't. I've had them as well, on a TJ and Explorer, and they performed a lot worse than other well know AT tires. I'll never recommend BFG ATs to anyone.

/threadjack

where are them pics!!

Core XK
12-21-2012, 11:13 AM
Yeah I did a ton of tire reviews when I went from the stock forteras and I am glad I went with a good tire. I think spending the extra for tires like DuraTracs or MTRs is well worth it even if you don't offroad constantly.

I have a dumb beginner question. Will a tire like Duratrac help in rain? for some reason with the lift and DuraTracs I tend to drive fast through any large puddle to cover the XK in dirty water :O

07JeepXK
12-21-2012, 11:29 AM
I just talked to him. He is still waiting at the shop. Said they were really busy.

06JeepXKHEMI
12-21-2012, 04:06 PM
Finally got the Jeep, as you can imagine everyone is getting tires and **** done today. Tires are on looking good, pics are gonna have to wait to tmrw weather sucks. Every thing aligned well in the green, except my damn steering wheel isnt straight which is annoying, you just cant rely on 100% hahaha! Ill go back next week and get wheel straightened, atleast the alignment is dead on.

07JeepXK
12-21-2012, 04:09 PM
I hate that. The dealer aligned my jeep when I got my first set of MT/R's and the steering wheel wasn't straight. They tried telling my the alignment was dead on and there was no way to fix it

duneslider
12-21-2012, 04:10 PM
Does the traction control not get all screwed up on these if the steering wheel isn't perfectly centered? On the JK if the steering wheel is even a little off center it thinks you are in a skid and activates traction control?

Matt
12-21-2012, 04:15 PM
That's an issue for the XK's too... but im not sure how far it needs to be off.

A quick fix you can center the steering wheel yourself. Depending how far off it is, it may only take one turn of each tie rod adjustment. If you want to give it a shot, I can elaborate on which way to turn them.

06JeepXKHEMI
12-21-2012, 04:19 PM
Ill just wait til I have them fix it, everything ele is lined up so thats all that matters right now.. Traction control is off every time I drive cause when I turn it always engages, in my InTune I have throttle boast which takes away from the lag you get with electronic throttle bodies so TC is usually partially off or all the way.

06JeepXKHEMI
12-21-2012, 04:20 PM
Also I didnt go to the place we had originally planned so..

06JeepXKHEMI
12-21-2012, 04:52 PM
As far as tires go Im really impressed with how they feel for the short trip I was on the highway, not as loud as my beat BFGs, slightly stiffer ride but thats to be expected. Ill be able to give a better report after my trip to Rochester Sunday am, looks like Ill be driving thru some crappy weather, will be interesting to see how they feel with 2+ hrs of highway driving.. Will be finding some unplowed roads when I get up there, Im itching more than ever to wheel

I have been running MT/R's with Kevlar since the day they came out and the are amazing in the snow on my XK! This is my 3rd set. I think TJ's just suck in the snow period. Their wheel base is to short and they don't have the weight of an XK

I drove in a few different conditions with the MTRs and have no complaints. I drove 2 hrs to Rochester, some snow with no issues, dry highway no issues and drove locally thru a few inches and they never skipped a beat. What I like most is they are less noisy than my BFGs I had. I just have to dial in my tire pressure.. I set at 37 but after driving they read 41, which to me seems high, when we talked about tire pressure do you set at cold pressure or warm pressure?

07JeepXK
12-26-2012, 09:47 AM
You always set tire pressure at cold psi. Just monitor the middle of the tread. If it starts wearing faster than the outsides, let out a few psi. If the outer edges are wearing faster than the inside you need to add a few psi.

Im going to be making my mount for the Billet Tech catch can that finally arrived after 50days!!! I need to know what size hole to drill, Im making an L bracket that will attach to the passenger strut bolt so I need to know that size..??

Also, I got Jacobs 4xGuard that needs to be cleaned up this weekend when I do diff service, votes on 1) painting it green, 2) wire brush and coat it or 3) paint diff cover green and diff guard wire brushed...?

I think its an 18mm socket for those strut bolts.... so a 1/2" hole should be good.

Id paint the diff guard green and give the cover/axle a fresh coat of black.

07JeepXK

Perfect thanks! Also after this weekend hearing those rear shocks Im moving forward with the Fox ones we talked about Matt, headers will have to wait. I need to get worn/broken things fixed before adding my wants to her.. Ill be doing diff service, diff guard painted, tire rotation and wrapping mid pipes with the header wrap this Saturday.. Once the rear shocks get in Ill do those and finally Matts rear spacer and possibly rear track bar if $$$ is there

I got the 2" lift ones, should I have gone with the 4"?

Matt
02-12-2013, 10:51 AM
Yeah when I contacted jba they said their 4" lift version is 11" travel and measures 28" extended. My current load levelers measure 27.5" extended.... so I think the 4" version are what im going with when I order. More flex in the rear to help compensate for the lack of travel in front.

I think their 2" version is 26.5" iirc...

By the way, has anyone been to 4xguard.com lately?!? There are a few more parts they ahve available which are intriguing to say the least.. rear long arms, mounts, etc, I know Scott said he called SL about buying their drop brackets, say you were to get those you could essentially build your own lift, correct?!?

criket
02-12-2013, 08:01 PM
I was browsing 4xguard site last week and seen the long arms. So I did some research on other suv's with long arms (mainly Liberty's that had sas's). The general concensus was that it's good to get long arms BUT if you get more lift in the future (sas in front, more lift on the front IFS) the rear long arms will have to be moved. THe geometry gets off once you put long arms on and THEN lift it more afterwards. The frame mounts will have to be moved forward.

I want those long arms so bad. But if I ever get a sas in the front, I'd have to cut off the mounting brackets, reweld them further forward.

stites-xk
02-12-2013, 08:26 PM
I was thinking about getting them but im not sure yet. Might start saving for a sas instead!

I hear you guys, I have no further plans about sas just not anytime in the next 5 yrs at least, unless I hit millions.. I do think rear long arms are a possibility if they will help with overall articulation, Maybe you more knowledgeable guys can step in here. But for the price It's now become a major possibility if others chime in on It's 1) worth, 2) someone who can install it at reasonable cost and 3) what other mods is a must - by this I mean can't be done without it, obviously a SL would be ideal but I just got these tires and plan to run them bald. Ideally I'd like to get the front spacer, new rear shocks, Matt's rear spacer all with rear long arms... thoughts?

Matt
02-13-2013, 07:02 AM
The long-arms are useless for us. Not to mention changing the arc radius of the lower control arm without also changing the arc radius of the upper can result in really bad pinion angles throughout the range of motion. They only help if you're adding them to the superlift thats going above 6".... in which case you'll be adjusting the upper arms as well.

Also keep in mind the gas tank is the limiting factor for the driverside travel. Adding those long arms will just be more low hanging metal to hang up on rocks.

06JeepXKHEMI
02-13-2013, 07:08 AM
Well there goes that idea!! hahaha As I said this weekend I just cant justify the SL right now, unless I have a great year Ill have spacer added and thats it

criket
02-13-2013, 10:41 AM
One thing you could do is swap in a WJ fuel tank (or a fuel cell) at the spare tire location. Then you'd have all the room for a 4 link with long arms.

02-13-2013, 10:54 AM

Awesome man! Make sure you take some eye-to-eye measurements for me. I did my taxes yesterday and am thinking about pulling the trigger on the resi version :)

The only thing you might need to do is move your brake line down a bit- that can be done with $10 worth of parts from home depot.

07JeepXK
02-16-2013, 06:22 AM
Extending the brake like would be a good idea. Not sure if it will be a problem if you don't though since you always run with you rear sway bars connected. That would limit the articulation in the rear.

Matt
02-16-2013, 06:25 AM
Yeah Andrew you'll definitely want to start disconnecting that rear sway bar for wheeling.... especially with these new shocks. The extra articulation in the rear will really help on the off-camber and challenging climbs on your next wheeling trip. You'll have a good 3" more travel before that rear tire comes off the ground.

06JeepXKHEMI
02-16-2013, 07:59 AM
Ok I wish thinking of removing it all together since so many of those with OME HD do, what all do I need to extend brake lines

Matt
02-17-2013, 06:30 AM
Honestly I can't remember what size bolts I used.... This was a quick repair I did after my disconnected sway bar links got jammed under the vehicle and bent everything up, so I used whatever was in the junk drawer in my tool box.

I've been meaning to do my driver side and do a nicer job with it. Maybe a job for tomorrow morning..

06JeepXKHEMI
02-19-2013, 07:23 AM
I was speaking with my Dad yesterday and he was wondering if these will give any additional lift in the back? I assume no but if mine are shot it would sag a bit correct?

Matt
02-19-2013, 07:27 AM
Are you able to compress them with your weight?

Bad shocks dont cause suspension sag. Bad shocks accelerate spring wear which then leads to sagging. With your OME HD springs you probably wont see much of a change if any from the gas charge.

06JeepXKHEMI
02-19-2013, 07:32 AM
They are pretty stiff, barely can compress them with my weight but they do compress eventually.. I wasnt expecting them to gain lift but Ill run some measurements to be sure.. Also Ill be taking some flex pics before and after to show difference, but keep in mind I have my sway bar intact now and then I wont..

Matt
02-19-2013, 07:43 AM
They compress slow due to the valving, but the extension force they exert is considerably less than your weight. You're a strong guy... how much can you raise the back of your xk via dead lift from the hitch? You wont see any more of an increase than that.

Given the OME HD spring rate, and assuming each shock puts out ~150 lb of force id expect less than 1/4" increase to static ride height. Looking forward to seeing what actually happens though!

Dont forget to post some pics in the shock thread. :)

06JeepXKHEMI
02-19-2013, 07:51 AM
Ill take measurements to be sure.. Ill start a thread now in the shock thread and update that when I install them.. Saturday is going to be a great day, shocks, rotate tires, diff service, diff guard sand and clear coat, catch can install and MAYBE oil change.. My XK is probably the reason Im single, dont have time or money for anything else!! Matt where do you order you diff fluids from, whoelsalemopar?

Matt
02-19-2013, 08:14 AM
I use AMSOIL. Dont forget the friction modifier.

Side note, I just remembered the rear springs only have a 280 lb/in rate. The fronts are 630 and therefore would be unaffected by the pressurized shock. Take some good measurements and ill be able to figure out how much linear force they actually have. If they are 150 lb then you might see close to 1/2".... even at a 15 degree shock angle. And 150 lb is possible if the piston diameter is 1" given a 200 psi charge. Oooh man now you have me curious. :)

Whats the OD? I couldn't find dimensions online... a .8" working diameter brings it down to 100 lb force..

06JeepXKHEMI
02-19-2013, 08:29 AM
OD?

cabledog25
02-19-2013, 08:31 AM
I think it means Outer Diameter.

06JeepXKHEMI
02-19-2013, 08:35 AM
I dont know the wall thickness to determine that..

06JeepXKHEMI
02-19-2013, 08:37 AM
Let me start the new thread to discuss this further..

Matt
02-19-2013, 08:39 AM
You dont need to know the wall thickness for the outer diameter. I can guestimate the inner diameter better if I know the OD and look up pressure vessel wall thickness standards for that material.

06JeepXKHEMI
02-19-2013, 09:48 AM
Whats the correct diff fluid from amsoil and amount needed Matt? Also can I get the friction modifier from them or dealer?

Matt
02-19-2013, 10:09 AM
Severe gear 75w-140... 4 qts is usually enough but id get 5 quarts to be safe.

I use the amsoil no-slip additive. 4oz per differential.

06JeepXKHEMI
02-19-2013, 10:14 AM

Im not the biggest fan of running spacers so Ive been doing research on the wheels Id like to get.. At first I wanted JK Pintlers, but cant justify the cost and then painting them, either completely or with green accents. I came across these:
https://theultimatejeep.com/notfound.png

They are reasonably priced so if I bend or mess one up I wont be kicking myself! I plan on painting the black accents green and with the style of the wheel similar to OEM and its polished look it will still compliment chrome accents. As far as wheel specs, 17x8.5 with 5.73 backspacing, same as JK Pintlers so Ill get that stance I wanted.. This will be a month or so out.. Thoughts, opinions, suggestions...

Matt
03-05-2013, 11:19 AM
17" with 5.7" bs is going to be an issue if you ever want the superlift. You're going to want 5-5.25" backspace.

06JeepXKHEMI
03-05-2013, 11:45 AM
Ill worry about that when time comes, if it ever does.. at $120/wheel these are wheels just for now to get spacers off and give a nice stance. SL is awhile out, I may go to 18s then.. what do you think of the wheel with green accents?

Matt
03-05-2013, 12:25 PM
I hear ya. They'll look good. They wont stick out quite as far as your current wheels... but only by 1/4" so it wont be very noticeable.

06JeepXKHEMI
03-05-2013, 12:35 PM
I thought with that type of backspacing they would...?

06JeepXKHEMI
03-05-2013, 12:43 PM
If anything Id like a wheel that gives the same or wider stance

Matt
03-05-2013, 12:43 PM
For an 8.5" wheel to stick out as far as your stock xk wheels w/1.5" spacers they'd need 5.5" backspace.

Do you have any issues with the pinch weld? Those wheels will give you a bit more clearance there.

06JeepXKHEMI
03-05-2013, 12:49 PM
I only have issue on the passenger side cause I havent properly tucked back the liner.. guess Ill keep looking, I dont want a narrower stance even by 1/4"..

07JeepXK
03-05-2013, 05:52 PM
Matt is right. Your current setup will stick out about a 1/4 inch farther than those new wheels

This is just my opinion and personal preference, but I would never mount a 265mm wide tire on any wheel wider than 8 inches. Again that's just me. My 285's are perfect for my 8 inch wide wheels. If I had 295's or 305's I'd install them on an 8.5 inch wide wheel and if I had 315's or 12.5 inch wide tires I'd install them on a 9 inch wide wheel. When it comes to wheeling a rig you want a tire width that will protect the wheel. A 265mm wide tire that is a hair shorted than 32 inches tall provides no protection (rubber) for a 9 inch wide wheel. Not only that but you have a way bigger chance of popping a bead when aired down. Just keep in mind I never said you can't run a narrow tire on wider wheel, I'm just saying I'd never do it.

Matt
03-07-2013, 07:55 PM
I hear ya. I think we're both on a similar 1-2 yr plan for the SL.

While i'm a fan of changing tires/wheels every 8-12 months, it might be a good idea to wait about a year and see where you're at. Would suck to spend money on a set of wheels right now and decide you need to change them out in a year or so if you pull the trigger on a SL.

I'm really looking forward to the day when you me and adam all have SL's, ~34" tires and are tackling some of the harder trails a Rausch making peoples jaws drops while they watch these 3 XK's tackle trails that shouldn't be possible.

In order to prepare for the hopefully soon release on the hidden winch plate from Jon I want to get started on my bumper mod.. Im going to do it as planned before, cut like the Sal mod but instead of cutting it completely Im folding it up at a 90* angle and plastic welding it to the side.. My question is I can get a used bumper for roughly $130 shipped with minor damage or buy new at $160 shipped and worry about the aftermarket bumper being cheap and brittle as many have complained about on other forums.. Im thinking get a used bumper fix whatever needs fixing since Ill be hacking it up anyway.. What would you do?!??!?

The cheaper new one doesnt have the holes for fog lights, do you know if you have a cut it out or does it pop out like other bumpers

Hmm not sure. All the front bumpers should have holes in it for fog lights. I don't even have fogs on my jeep but it still has the holes.

Been awhile since Ive updated my garage, obviously everyone knows headers are coming just a matter of time. But I do have a non Jeep related garage update, as you know Ive always loved Nissan 240sx's owned a few, heres my last one..

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2013/04/20344_273927221963_2970125_n_zps9d0070db-1.jpg

I recently been pursuing another one and found this "gem" in RI which Ill be picking up next week..

https://theultimatejeep.com/notfound.png

As you see I love that color, same as my other and this one has every option including ABS which is rare to find on these, funny I know. So this one has an issue with the MAF so Ill be trailering it back and starting on rust repair on the rockers, frame rails are clean. Its an auto with 166k but the motor and transmission wont be staying long, Ill be swapping those out for either a vh45de V8 infiniti Q45 or possibly an RB25det skyline motor. It will be a project and now a part of my garage so look for updates.

Dont worry this will no effect my XK build just need something else to enjoy in the summer months, Ive been dying to get one back in my life and build it the way I wanted to when I was in college but didnt have the funds. Plus, how sweet will it be trailering it behind my XK!!?!?!

Nah, I wanted to back in the day but all the kits have horrible fitment issues I'd like a kouki 97-98 front end but I have a thing for zenkis 95-96.. As far as motor goes I'm not sure if I'm going the V8 route or jdm Turbo motor, I've got a great lead on a complete vh45de V8 swap that I'm considering. That motors power band is retarded and weighing 2500lb car with 280hp and 275ft lb tq, na V8 power becomes an absolute animal.. search YouTube vh45de swap 240sx..

Yea me to, Id love an RB, but Im going to do this build right.. Ill be fixing the rocker rust and dropping rear subframe, replacing subframe/diff bushings and adding rear adjustable arms. While thats getting done Ill be cleaning and undercoating the whole car with chassis saver and bedliner. Then coilovers, brakes and wheels.. Once its a solid base Ill do a nice motor swap..

Thanks man, Ill post up progress for sure.. First is getting it 5 speed, already have half the parts. Once thats done it will begin.. I realized I could be throwing money at my XK but I thought long and hard about it. I was close to going SL+OME modded 34s and sliders, but Im still making payments on it and with the way I think and wheel Ill end up breaking something. Right now its perfect so I wanted something to keep me entertained and I can enjoy the nice weather with AND do some drifting! Anyways, look for updates..

I need to get a car to play with as well for the nice days out. But knowing me I will end up in trouble doing that too. My last import I had MODed was a 95 Accord EX 5sp (4dr) when done it was doing mid to high 11s quarter mile. All JDM setup.
Loved it

I thought I'd update this with some work that's been going on with the 240, once the Jeep is gone I'm still using this as my garage to stay active with everyone. Anyways, I tore the whole front end apart, lights, bumpers, fenders, fan/fan shroud, intake, etc.. The parts list grows everyday but I want to get all the maintenance out of the way now so I can enjoy this thing. So far I got plugs, wires, cap, rotor, valve cover gasket, water pump, front cover with seal, front and rear hubs and bearings, upgrade 300zx twin Turbo brakes with steel beaded lines , rockers from clean shell in Fla, coilovers, manual transmission/mount, slave and master cylinders, clutch fork, clutch line, driver and passenger fenders. I need time purchase a whole exhaust system cause the jackass previous owner cut cats and welded the whole exhaust with leaks everywhere, so headers, test pipe and exhaust are next on the list as well as a clutch kit and flywheel. Sounds like a lot of $$$ but in reality parts are stupid cheap.. Here are some shots of it's current state as of last night..

And how I got it the day after I picked her up, this us my favorite color can't wait to get this all cleaned up..

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2013/05/dy8ymara-1.jpg

As you can see it's kind if rough but after I'm done she'll look better than new. All this is cosmetic, chassis and frame are solid..

So this weekend I'm going to do as much work maintenance wise as I can with the parts I have as well as grind down all surface rust underneath to start preparing for POR15 and undercoating. Also will be cutting out rusted rockers, sanding the pathetic excuses for bondo on quarters and remounting wire harness in drivers wheel well so when I'm slammed and sliding around I won't destroy the harness. So there she is, more updates to come..

Oh and got these in to help..

Update from this weekend, Jeep went up online should be on my buddies car lot website, cars.com and auto trader. Was emotional haha.. Also got a decent amount done to the 240, wires, plugs, cap, rotor, valve cover, water pump and started front hubs, need axle sockets to finish them up. While the valve cover was off I shot it with the painti bought to match outside, came out pretty good, not going to waste time wet sanding and buffing a valve cover but I like it.. some shots

Soon enough as promised though I'm going to do a video of how to wet sand and buff for those who are interested, will be a few weeks though. Steering rack, rockers, tie rods and ends, BBK, all will be here this week , picked you the manual tranny and drivers fender yesterday.. it's coming along, slowly but surely

Update: First and foremost, have a couple highly interested in the Jeep. They came from an hr away to check it out and the guy knew his s**t. First thing he mentioned was the rare color combination, then all the "right" mods that Ive done. They test drove it and said they are coming back this morning so it may have found a new home. Id be happy to see this couple take it, knowing this guy did his research, is an older guy looking for a Jeep to go camping with and its particular about thing much like myself makes me feel alot better about it. This is the type of buyer Im looking for and although Ill hate to see her go, at least itd be going to good owner. I didnt meet them yesterday, my buddy who owns the lot did so today if they do show up Ill be going down to talk things over. Ill definitely be referring him to this group so I can keep an eye on it and he can join the TUJ family, Ill keep everyone updated!

As far as the 240sx, Ive done quite a bit, got the water pump done, plugs, wires, valve cover all done. Front suspension and steering rack are off and awaiting new parts, once the hubs come in I can start on the BBK. Ill be undercoating and coating the fender wells this coming week. Once she's driveable, its going to the body shop for welding and paint, I was going to do most myself but I just dont have the time to do it and need to get it on the road since the Jeep is where its at. Its going to cost me a bit but even after all the parts Ive bought and body work, I could still sell for a profit if need be. No pics but Ill update that this afternoon..

A lot has changed over the last week especially with the 240sx.. Ive got the brakes done, coilovers done and addressed ride height, camber (for now) and Ive got it to be a pretty reliable driver to get to the body shop. Here are some pics, with old fender and roughly mounted..

Shot next to Jeep

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2013/06/yzy7umuz-1.jpg

Coilover and BBK install- Brakes are from a 300zx TT, calipers are aluminum and 30mm brembo rotors, hawk pads

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2013/06/da2y9eqe-1.jpg

You can also see the 3m rubberized coating, definitely like this stuff and highly recommend it. Its easy to clean and pretty durable. It is pretty low, maybe to low but for now its staying like this until after the body work gets done and Ill pull rear subframe for that part of resto..

Now onto the Jeep.. As I said things have changed in the last week and I MAY be keeping her. Ive thought about it and may stay where Im at putting of the move. Still not 100% and wont jump to conclusions, but I will keep everyone informed. If I do decide to keep her, a wheeling trip is need ASAP!!

I replaced the starter in my jeep. Wasn't to hard. Definitely remove the front drive shaft so you can get your hands up in there. To do so you sort of have to remove the transmission cross member. Several bolts and a nice jack to hold up the tcase/transmission and you'll be on your way. If not you will also have trouble getting the old starter out and new starter in do to lack of clearance.

Looks like stock steering components which might like to wander. Mine has ZJ parts which are upgrade but not much and it isn't the tightest of steering but obviously works.
Welding the rear isn't my favorite, it will wear the tires faster, but that is an upgraded rear axle and disc brakes are nice.
No AC?! (I'm spoiled..)

Everything else sounds good, but who knows until you actually look at.. price seems pretty fair. I paid $3500 for mine and while it was totally drive-able, it need some work and still does...

I can almost bet that rear axle came out of a Ford Explorer. Most guys that do the 8.8 swap use them because an 8.8 is stronger than a Dana 44 (8.5 inch ring gear) and you can get them with rear disc's brakes and not even have to convert.

It came out great, rides surprisingly well for being so low, the rear adjustable arms were well worth the $$$ I spent on them. And the handling is unbelievable taking on raps at 60+ before the tires start giving way.

After all this work, Ive put it up for sale or trade. I cant ignore my roots, I need to be in a Jeep and need to make that happen as soon as possible. I love this car and always will, was great learning experience for me as Ive never really tackled this amount of work on my own but it taught me a lot, including patience and most importantly take the extra time to get a right part even if you have to save and spend a bit more, well worth it in the end.
So Ive got my eye on a few TJ's, both are lifted one is 4.5" LA and other 6" skyjacker. Im trying to get the 240 sold before making an offer but I may need to jump the gun on one of these soon. Also have a trade offer from a guy with a 99 XJ 4"lift but I have my heart set on a TJ. Hopefully Ill be wheeling again soon!!!

I've got 33's with 4.56 gears which seems to be pretty good. From what I read 4.88's have a tendency to break easier under load than the 4.56's but I obviously don't have any personal experience with that part.

If it still has the D35 in the rear you might want to upgrade that, apparently they are pretty weak. Again no personal experience though. I've got a 89 D44 axle under mine with the stock D30 up front.

I keep saying I'm going to get diff guards, but I have yet to hit my diffs, or really anything except rock rails under this jeep. I bought a oil pan skid and it's still never been touched, with solid axles and more ground clearance the undercarriage just isn't as vulnerable as the XK was.. My trans, t-case, and gas tank are all unprotected, and untouched.

If he didn't extend the bump stops (a lot) you will cut up 33's on 4.5", I extended my rear bump stops, and the front was already done when I got it, but not enough, I decided to remove the stock fender flairs and just cut the fenders for more clearance.

Common problems - rear main seal which will leak oil down between the motor/trans., cheap part but pain in the ass job I paid someone else to do it. Same with the other common problem which is the flex plate (would be the flywheel in a manual) they are notorious for cracking and then they make a bunch of noise/ticking. $100 part, but you have to pull the trans to replace it so expensive/big job labor wise. Keeping the motor cool is the other thing, mine had some issues, but they were pretty minor or self inflicted so I don't have a lot of experience there. The e-fan should turn on with the ac compressor, if it doesn't you might run into some cooling issues. Mine is all sorted now and runs 210 degrees all day long even towing my small 4x8 yard trailer with 1000lbs of rock/sand.

Rusty floorboards - pull the carpet and check, crawl underneath and poke around, I had to replace about 75% of the sheet metal under both the driver and passenger's feet..

I think thats all I got for now, if you have specific questions let me know.

06JeepXKHEMI
11-12-2013, 08:57 AM
Thanks for the info, it's got the 8.25 rear and hp30 upfront. I dont know about the bump stops so Ill flex it out a bit and check clearances. The fenders are already cut and tires dont seem to have any cuts or rash on the consistent with rubbing. It seems to have the "open" cooling system not the closed one which is more problematic from my understanding with ZJs..

Ill look into 4.56s, but Im more interested in running an open front with LSD rear and np231 part time tcase would suffice when wheeling..??? Apparently the 231 is a stronger case for wheeling but this is an area Im unfamiliar with and thinking a np241 swap may be in order. Which case do you have?

Its got front disco's and Ive got rear discos in my storage, so after I determine the length of bump stops I can go from there. It does have the skyjacker 4.5" lift, not sure where the weak parts of the lift but Im assuming some nice shocks would be ideal, this will come after sliders which from you and others have said are ideal.

Definitely looking forward to wheeling this thing though!! RC trip soon????

hoaxci5
11-12-2013, 09:11 AM
They switched to open cooling systems somewhere in the early 90's so yea that won't be a problem, but xj's in general still have cooling issues.

I've got a 231 t-case and read the same thing as you, I don't really see the benefit to switching to the 241, I've driven 2wd trucks through michigan winters, sure 4wd would have been nice, but I wouldn't drop the money on it. However I'd bet if you wanted to swap you could find someone with a 241 that would trade you straight across.

With a 4.5" lift the t-case should have a slip yoke eliminator (not required but 4.5" is sort of the tipping point)

Mine doesn't have a rear sway bar, which has been fine, and forgot to connect my front one time on the ride home and that was very noticeable.

You've got a long haul to RC now, I don't have any plans on going soon, I'm trying to save/convince the wife to let me pickup a tow rig and trailer :)

Yea its probably a 6hr drive at least, Im sure there's local things around here but Im going to try to make the next RC trip.. And spare parts I should carry when wheeling besides spare?

Ill probably keep the 231 as I read more there is more aftermarket support for it. As far as the SYE, Im not sure if it has it, Ill pull up pics of the the difference and take a look when I have it..

He said the thermostat went bad at one point but hasnt had any issues since. Ill be going through it with a fine comb to see what it needs

I've broken radiator (twice) - bad motor mounts allowed the motor to shift enough for the clutch fan to hit the radiator and spring a leak. I patched one with RTV to get off the trail (should have just drove it..) the second one, I gathered up all the containers I could from people and drove it home, leaking, as the temp would climb, I'd stop and refill, which was about every 45 minutes, but I only had a 2 hr ride home.

My big break was my drivers side front axle shaft. I'm not sure what order things happened in, but I ended up needing a new axle shaft because the lobes were tore off, u-joint (most likely failed and took the rest with it..), upper and lower ball joints. I might not have needed these had I noticed I broke sooner.

If you carry a breaker bar and a 36mm axle socket you can drive home with just the outer shaft in place because it is held against the unit bearing. So to keep parts small, I've just got an extra outer shaft since it will work on both sides. Special tools required to replace it are just the axle socket which should be the same size as yours but I'm not positive, and 12 point 13mm to remove the unit bearing. An allen key to remove the caliper I think 8mm but don't rely on that, and then the rest is just normal sockets.

This way you don't have to worry about trying to replace u-joints on the trail which can be done, but if they are old it's a pain in the ass I fought with mine at my house with a press and hammer for way longer that it should have taken. I can't imagine doing it on the trail with old ones at least.

So I guess an outer shaft and drive shaft u-joints, and extra fluids is about all I carry. Lots of tools :p

Sounds good thanks again man! Are you still open upfront or did you reinstall the locker?

I put the locker back in, which is why I didn't realize I had broken the axle.. the damn thing bang and clangs so much I just assumed it was that and kept driving until I tried to turn and the ball joints were toast..

You're running 33x12.5x15 correct? I wonder what else Ill have to do to prevent rubbing since the current bfgs are 33x10.5.. Adam said for me to check backspacing so Ill do that and go form there
