Wondering if any TUJ members are up for wheeling at RC on August 12th. (edited. I thought the 11th was Sunday)

Tim (chevelleman4292) and I are planning on heading there for his bday. Anyone interested?

Wheeling Sunday the 12th:
Matt , (Matt), XK, Comfort Inn
Tim (chevelleman), WK or TJ, Comfort Inn
Sean (Matts friend), YJ, Comfort Inn
Chuck (works with Tim) XK, Comfort Inn
Corey? (Core XK) XK, Meeting Sun AM
Adam (07JeepXK), XK, Camping?
Andrew (06JeepXKHEMI), XK, Camping?
Jake (hoaxci5) XK, Camping?

.... that looks like 6 XK's so far. Might be one of the biggest east coast XK meets in a while

Cool. pretty sure Tim will be in his TJ too. I'm actually driving it today... he's fixing a brake line for me.

07JeepXK

Nice. I just had to replace my passenger side rear caliper last night.

Matt
06-22-2012, 09:53 AM
My right rear brake line got bashed/kinked when my sway bar link hit it. Needed to make a new bracket and put ~8" new line on. The good news is I wont have to worry about tight brake lines while flexing now! Lol

Not sure if anyone caught this... but Sunday is the 12th

07JeepXK
07-21-2012, 07:05 AM
So what does that mean???

Matt
07-21-2012, 07:31 AM
I put 11th in the title because i screwed up the dates. We're driving up after work on the 11th and wheeling all day Sunday.

Were you planning on wheeling both days?

07JeepXK
07-21-2012, 07:35 AM
Oh i see. Cant youu change the title? When we go we usually drive up friday night and wheel the weekend. Im almost positive that my little brother wont be attending due to a recent motorcycle accident. So if there is no one else wheeling saturday id just come up saturday night and wheel sunday.

Matt
07-21-2012, 07:39 AM
I dont have the power to change the title like you :p

I think Sal wants to make a weekend out of it if he comes. And 06JeepXKHEMI if he's cruising along with you.

Hope your bro's alright man.

Matt

Yea Im not sure what Im doing exactly, I take it you guys will be camping?

Depends on who's coming with me and the weather. We normally split a room at the comfort inn (~$70 split 2-4 ways aint bad).

I haven't re-built my camping gear (used to camp a lot in highschool and dont have my equipment anymore) so id have to sleep in my jeep if we camp.

06JeepXKHEMI
07-21-2012, 07:51 AM
Ok I dont have camping gear either so would probably get a room as well.. Im pretty flexible that weekend, coming down Saturday night might work even better, I can put some work in Saturday AM

Normally yes you can have fires in the camping area. But if PA is like NY right now they have a ban on fires until October due to lack of rain.

As I said before Im up for whatever, worst case a sleeping bag in the back of the XK is all good with me, not like its to small!!! No family here for me either so Ill most likely be solo or bring pops along for the ride..

Some slightly bad news for me. I have a Monday morning flight for work travel the day after wheeling. (Though I'm keeping my fingers crossed it gets delayed)

Worst case, I'm still wheeling but will have to stay with the guys on the easier trails.

Guys, by the end of next week i'll need a final list of everyone who wants to camp. Was just reading the rules and it looks like a "group leader" has to give advanced notice.

It will just be me sleeping in the Jeep.

We always just gave Lynn a heads up that we were coming, and that we planned on staying there. I'll be camping, there no such thing as a paratrooper staying in a hotel...haha

I edited 06JeepXKHEMI's name in first post

Matt
07-24-2012, 08:03 AM
Cool, I've never camped there so wasn't sure what to expect. Do you want to take lead in letting them know we're camping since you've dealt with Lynn in the past?

And yeah.... please let me know if there are errors in the first post; I often try doing 10+ things at the same time and will mess up names or something.

07JeepXK
07-24-2012, 08:36 AM

Same for me I have to wait and see if I can I want to come up Friday because its a long drive. I should know more by the end of this week or the beginning of next week. I might just bounce Friday evening if I have to but that means getting in around 0100 Saturday.

At some point add some instructions/directions to where your camping to the first post in case we get in real late. A few days prior we might want to swap numbers as well. How's the cell coverage out there?

07JeepXK
07-24-2012, 07:23 PM
The camping area isnt all that big and its first come first serve. You will see where the XK is parked so will have no issued finding me. I'll save room for others to setup there tent. I have Verizon and never had a problem getting service. Even on the trails I get full signal.

Sal-XK
07-24-2012, 07:25 PM
Ok will do. I have Verizon and never had a problem getting service. Even on the trails I get full signal.

Ok cool! at URE there is almost no signal so when people are showing up late in the dark getting a hold of each other to guide them into camp is difficult. Remember this will be a first visit for some of us and getting there at night won't help.

07JeepXK
07-24-2012, 07:27 PM

Matt
07-24-2012, 07:44 PM
The hardest part for getting there at night will be seeing the entrance to the park.... but if you pass it, you really can't go that far away without knowing that you missed it.

One you turn in to the driveway, you can't miss the camping area.

You guys better not over-wheel on Saturday; save the good stuff for when we're all there :p

I will be only 20 minutes away from RC because I will be up my uncles mountain house in Mt. Carmel, PA. I plan to drive over Sunday morning so ill need to know whats a good time to get there since its my first time.

I will have my dog up the mountains with me. I don't mind bringing him but how would they be in the back of the XK while on trails? :P

Matt
07-25-2012, 08:35 AM
We like to be on the trails no later than 9. Normally we've hit most of the park by 4 pm depending how quick our group is moving.

Since we'll have a large group, it will really help if everyone has a CB so we can keep check on everyone while we're moving along. If you have to stop or need help, no one will know unless you're able to communicate.

A handheld CB is a cheaper / easy solution.

06JeepXKHEMI
07-25-2012, 08:59 AM
Matt, any advice on handheld cb's? Ive seen some decent Cobra ones for $100..

Matt
07-25-2012, 09:08 AM
I'm running the Midland 75-822 for the best of both worlds. Put on the battery cartridge to use as handheld, or hook up the car adapter for use with a full scale antenna. Well under $100.

I appreciate that and depending on how much I like wheeling that weekend will depend on my list growing larger for mods lol

I don't mind buying a CB w/ maybe a magnatized antenna for now? it would just depend on the cost

I suppose I will look at the CB thread to get an idea of how to work these things as well

Matt

Cell phone really doesn't help.... by the time you call someone to tell them what's going on And then they relay to everyone else....

No to mention you can't hear all the other discussion... like the leader saying "hey be careful off this drop" or "there's a big rock in the middle of this puddle I just hit"

Cobra HHROADTRIP 40-Channel CB Radio - $75 from amazon is the handheld that I bought for my wife's van when we drove cross country. Comes with everything you need. Magnetic antenna or short hand held antenna, can run on batteries or 12 volt in the vehicle (without batteries in it even)

Works better than my cheap midland cb with cheap 2' antenna and custom built antenna mount. (I think the mount/antenna are the problem...)

Hey guys, updated the first post again.

Tim and Sean's wives are coming with up. While both of them enjoy camping, they're not up for "primitive camping" (as RC calls it) which involves no bathroom fascilities, only port-o-pots and no running water. So looks like we're going to get some rooms at the comfort inn.

Also, since it looks like a good bunch of you guys are coming up for the weekend, I'm going to see about leaving here earlier Saturday afternoon and maybe we can meet up for dinner Saturday after you guys are done your first day of wheeling? (If my trip gets delayed, im not ruling out leaving 5-6 AM Sat morning and wheeling with you guys both days..... maybe even drive out Fri night and just sleep in the XK)

07JeepXK
07-26-2012, 05:41 AM
Do they know that when were out on the trails there is no place to go to the bathroom besides behind a tree...lol

Matt
07-26-2012, 05:44 AM
Oh yeah, they've been wheeling before... that's not a problem.

06JeepXKHEMI
07-26-2012, 06:06 AM
So are the guys camping still or are we doing rooms? Im sure my plans are definite to come down Saturday afternoon, its about 4 hrs so Id get there around dinner time if everyone up for a dinner run

Are you still going Friday night?

Trying to figure that out now. I forgot that I work Friday which means I wouldnt get to RC until about 10pm. Its not fun setting up a tent in the dark. Maybe I'll just put in for leave on Friday. Unless no one else plans on being there Friday night. I'll have to play it by ear. Is anyone definitely wheeling all day Saturday?

07JeepXK
07-28-2012, 06:28 PM
Well I've got some bad news guys. Unfortunately it's not looking like i'm going to make it this time around. The trip to Whispering Pines today was a test for my Jeep and lets just say that my Jeep didn't pass the test. I'm still experiencing some crazy driveline issues that I thought I had pin pointed to being the front differential. After having Andrew's father witness the noise today, he seems to think that it might be coming from the transfer case. Without knowing what is the exact problem is im going to be forced to rip out both the front differential and the transfer and tear them both apart. This issue, on top of a leaking rear main seal, is going to put the XK out of commission for a couple weeks while it goes under the knife.

Matt
07-28-2012, 07:26 PM
Or..... work like hell and dont miss the biggest east-cost XK meet every!

Drain the tcase fluid. If it looks good, refill with fresh fluid and focus on the front diff. Do the same with the front diff. If one of them have a lot of clutch material in the fluid you'll know where to focus your energy.

07JeepXK
07-28-2012, 07:30 PM
Well there shouldn't be any clutch material in my front diff. I don't have QD II. Id like to pull the cover and see if any teeth are missing from the ring gear. As far as the t-case I'll drain it this week and see what the fluid looks like.

Matt
07-28-2012, 07:32 PM
For some reason I keep thinking you have QDII... i guess the awesomeness of the snorkel and bigass 33s always leads me to that conclusion! lol

What kind of noise are you getting? Missing/chipped teeth will normally result in an annoying whine sound

Sal-XK
07-28-2012, 08:20 PM
It's not that loud ass pop us QT2 guys get when those spydr gears cut loose is it? Anyway I think you should come and just not push it to much. I know being that far from home still dealing with rubbing issues myself I won't be going crazy either. As looks right now I should be free to leave Friday anytime I want :) so far anyway it's looking good.

It's funny cause I didn't really have any rubbing. The bump stops fixed that. Andrew rubbed more than I did with his 32s.

06JeepXKHEMI
07-29-2012, 07:45 AM
I rubbed on all 4s but that is cause of my lift, I will have the OME by months end, Im about done with this spacer lift!!! Adam I know we have been weighing heavily on the transfer case but when you are in 4lo your wheel speed is higher and if you're missing teeth on the pinion gear thats what that noise could be. Discussing it with pops for awhile today, if it were the chain we wouldnt still be talking if its happening as much as you say. Id like to hear what Sal is referring to about the spydr gears cut loose, maybe thats a route you can take.

Sal-XK
07-29-2012, 08:29 AM
Id like to hear what Sal is referring to about the spydr gears cut loose, maybe thats a route you can take.

On the qt2 when the brake grabs the spinning wheel to force the power to the other side it makes this horrible popping noise in some situations. Pretty much at the higher wheel spin this happens. The brakes just stop the tire cold so all that power has to go somewhere and that's the noise we here. But after thinking about it I know he runs with his traction control off pretty much so thats probably not what he is hearing.

When ever my XK goes into 4 low I push and hold down the traction control button until it reads ESP disabled on the dash. However I know that doesn't totally disable the traction control because I do the same method at Rausch Creek and can get two wheels on the opposite axles up in the air and still climb rocks no problem. So the traction control is still kicking in and applying the brakes to that tire in the air. The only way to totally disable the traction control is to pull the fuse, or flip the switch I built in to the fuse box to disable it. But then the jeep sucks off road because of the open differentials and getting power to only one wheel on each axle. If I had a rear ARB it would be a different story.

Not sure what route you guys take home.... BUT my tradition has been to stop at Ol'West BBQ in Annandale NJ (1316 State Route 31 N) on my way home from RC.

If it's not too far out of your way, you're more than welcome to join!

The lift he has on his XK ended up not being and RC lift. I'm not exactly sure which brand it is but both front and rear spacers are a rubber/poly?? type spacer. Neither are metal. So Andrew purchashed a used OME lift that I'm installing for him tomorrow night. He will gain about 3/4 of an inch in the rear and well over an inch up front.

Since I don't know where I am going I plan to arrive at RC around 8 am? or should I wait until later? I guess I have to go directly to the officer to register? I already completed the required form to speed the process up.

Matt
08-10-2012, 06:55 PM
It's easy man. Once you pull into the lot you basically drive straight ahead to the office building (trailer). Go in there and register. If you're the first one there, tell them you're with The Ultimate Jeep group. They might take your phone number and mark you down as the group leader.... thats no big deal. Basically means they'll call you at closing time if we all havent checked out yet.

See you guys tomorrow! I am leaving now to get the flowmaster on :)!!!!!

07JeepXK
08-11-2012, 05:55 AM
Yeah we ran into a little issue during the install that set us back several hours. Note to self: when you have your brother install the new coils on the new struts using the spring compressor at his work, make sure the top strut plate is aligned with the strut fork properly before you leave!! That is all.

Matt
08-11-2012, 06:01 AM

Matt

Just checked the weather. Looks like we're going to have a beautiful day tomorrow!!!

Morning wheeling will be interesting since they just got a lot of rain and the days going to start off wet & dreary. We'll find a few places for Adam to play with his snorkel!

07JeepXK
08-11-2012, 06:54 AM
Yup! ...and the best part is I tried to call him back so we could go back to the shop and fix it but he didn't answer his phone. I Had to a locate a set of spring compressors at 11pm and compress the springs enough to get everything lined up properly. Not fun at all. It put us back about 2 1/2 hours..

I'm on pretty poopy internet, so it took me like an hour to upload these photos for facebook, it should be a public album, so tag and do as you wish...
