I love going through this forums old threads and reading up on peoples adventures/problems/suggestions.....work is slow and I've spent the past 2 hours doing so....

So I get paid 3x in October so I'll be doing X-mas shopping for the family then, and the fiance layed on me that she will give me a $400 gift card to 4xGuard.com :)

DECISIONS DECISIONS!!

Matt

lol Pretty much...my mom will also grab me the Black 4x front guard so that takes care of that!

I am thinking SLIDERS!!!!!

Matt
09-07-2012, 05:49 AM

Core XK
09-07-2012, 06:21 AM
Or gift card for SA sliders and do what usmc did!!

Matt
09-07-2012, 07:09 AM
You know I like that option better for a lot of reasons.

Core XK
09-07-2012, 07:15 AM
You know I like that option better for a lot of reasons.

The more I look at the SA I like them a lot better. I think I'll get them unpainted with the side plate/logo. It will be $569.00 so they will only cost 169.00 out of pocket, and we can paint them black!???

Matt
09-07-2012, 07:28 AM
We can paint them whatever color your heart desires!

Core XK
09-07-2012, 07:31 AM
lol I think SA sliders and 4x Front Guard sounds like a good x-mas....

I then have a college refund to splurge with in January!

Matt

You are only allowed to paint over the pink and purple after you have beat the skids hard enough to have to remove them to pound them back in place...

I did some more work to the pinch weld and side moldings with some plasti-dip. I will post pics once the grip tape goes on...it looks much better.

Matt

Core XK
09-10-2012, 07:00 PM

06JeepXKHEMI
09-10-2012, 07:00 PM
Yea and so did I, plus the OME HD lift!!! I feel his pain

Matt
09-10-2012, 07:04 PM
haha it does seem to get more expensive! how important is replacing the factory UCA's? don't they rub because of lift? is this why?

You stock UCA's will need to be replaced in the near future due to wear. Once they're gone, get the JBA UCA's so you're not replacing them every year.

Yea and so did I, plus the OME HD lift!!! I feel his pain

True!

Core XK
09-10-2012, 07:06 PM
Well I'll have the money for either the rear locker or new UCA's in January. Suggestions? :P

Matt
09-10-2012, 07:08 PM
Do the locker. Then when you "need" the UCAs a few months later your fiance can't give you crap.

06JeepXKHEMI
09-10-2012, 07:08 PM
Locker...

Then Matt will convince you to get UCAs 2 weeks later. Accept it now it will be easier when time comes

Mine is to, havent aligned it since the OME went in.. Tires are not cupping or anything so Ill wait til I go in for Oil change. Looks like its actually helping my tires since they were cupped from the last owner, Ive also ran a little less air pressure (33lbs) which is helping..

Andrew, 2" is the perfect size to cover those holes. It looks much better now. I'll try to throw pictures up today if I get home early.

I plasti-dip'd the pinch weld and about 5-6 inches of each side to make them look like rock rails :P

06JeepXKHEMI

So here are a few pictures of the stuff I did after removing the stock rock guards. I hated them and I like the look without them (until sliders of course). I think all of this would look better on the darker XK's but what can ya do :P

You can see the holes in the pinch weld in these pictures but I since covered them and plasti-dip'd so it looks better.

I'd rather have the locker first over the lift. Without traction you can't do nothing. Then the superlift!

Matt
10-05-2012, 02:31 PM
I disagree. The QTII system provides plenty of "traction". I'd take the QTII + superlift + bigger tires over a standard lifted XK with QTII + locker. Our clearance is pitiful. Even at Rausch creek QTI will take you through ANY trail that we have the clearance to make it through (with proper skids/protection anyways). Regardless of which 4x4 system we're running you can't get to that next level without the superlift.

Well I kind of have to disagree with you about the QT I. Jay with the 4 inch lifted WK came to Rausch Creek with me when I blew the transfer case and he couldn't do half the trails I did especially when it came to hill climbs. And I was only running 265's at the time and he was running 33x12.50's. he was banging the front crossmember off everything and getting hung up all the time on stuff I drove right over. When it came to the hill climb his WK was way under powered and also couldnt get the traction needed due to not having 4 low. I used to wheel there with my buddy's 6 inch lifted FJ on 35s and I made it down every black trail he did with my minimal ground clearance. The traction of a QT II isn't bad but at the same time destroys the drive train when it applies the brake to a spinning wheel. Since you guys really aren't going to do any crazy trails there he would benefit from the locker over the extra 2 inches of lift.

07JeepXK
10-05-2012, 04:10 PM
And I love wheeling with huge lifted trucks on 36+ inch tires with crazy ground clearance that get buried because they have open differentials front and rear. Again traction is a key element in wheeling. Not sure why were even talking about this. Lol superlift isn't even available and ill make a bet it won't be available for a long time!

Matt
10-05-2012, 04:11 PM
I've done every trail there my XK is capable of going through without the additional approach/departure angles and belly clearance the superlift provides and not a single one of them would "require" the rear locker with the QTII system.

I guess it depends on how bad you're willing to smash your undercarriage and possibly body panels against stuff. I get the feeling that Corey is a bit like me and doesn't want to beat the crap out of our vehicles to get it through something.

I dont know how Jay's vehicle was setup but driver ability also plays a huge role. My buddy with his 3.7L QTI WK has made it up some serious stuff (one climb where even you swore he couldn't get up IIRC)

Truck for truck, i'd put a superlifted 5.7L QTII w/33s over a 2" lifted 5.7L QTII w/32s & rear locker any day of the week, especially at Rausch.

Matt
10-05-2012, 04:16 PM

So now all of the sudden that you have a lunchbox locker in the rear you're comparing the QTII system to a basic drivetrain with open diffs?

Case in point Tim (3.7L QTI) WALKED up a climb that a TJ with 35s struggled to make it up because of his open diffs.

You weren't there for this trip... but this guy was blushing at a few places and i believe ordered a locker within the next day or so after the trip lol

Well I guess I can agree with you about the last statement but the 4 inch Superlift isnt available and I will bet that it wont be available for awhile. Members waited 5+ months for it to arrive and ended up having to cancel the order. So with that in mind, why not spend the money to add a rear locker and save the beating on the drive train. Applying the brakes to a wheel that has all the power going to it totally beats on the internals of the differential/transfer case of a QT II. You dont have this problem because you have one of the most superior 4wd sustems on the market that uses ELSD's.

Jay has a 4 inch lift running 33x12.5's. He has been wheeling all his life just like us. What I was referring to was the fact that his crossmember hangs a lot lower then an XK/WK running an OME lift which was getting hung up on rocks on blue trails that we would drive right over.

I wasnt comparing the QT II system to a vehicle that has open differentials. We both know the QT II will beat open differentials hands down. Remember the wrangler I had to tow up the hill climb at Rausch Creek that had open diffs. And I did that with a bad transfer case. I used the statement of big lifted trucks with huge tires and open differentials to show that lift isnt everything. You also need traction at the same time. I know the QT II system works well off road but after wheeling last week with the rear locked its so much more capable and not as harsh on the drive train. Ask Sal about the noise our front end makes when the brakes are applied to a wheel that loses traction. Its not good!

Matt

Of course lift isn't everything.... lol anytime a WK or XK goes offroad we prove that fact

My point was you made it sound like Corey would be so much better off with the noslip over the superlift, which I didn't agree with..... and it sounds like I misinterpreted you because you said you agree with me lol. And like you said, if the superlift isn't available then yes, of course I agree id get the locker for exactly the reasons you mentioned. But I don't think Corey is going to make that type of purchase for quite some time; so hopefully im installing two superlifts and not 1 locker next year.... :D

I'm back! and I am glad to see the debate on my garage thread. GET THE **** OUT OF MY GARAGE........kidding.

I am constantly learning from you guys and the price difference of the SL to the locker is pretty significant (especially since the SL is having so many issues of being ordered/delivered) I am not sure what route I will go after sliders. I will be FULL armored in January RC trip with sliders and front guard; so after that I need to think hard if I want the locker or keep saving cash for the SL.

And yes Matt is right, I will never beat my XK to get through any trail. I am excited for the challenge of the blues but I will never push the XK too far.

LMAO you were 2 posts away from me setting up a Adam Vs Sal offroad challenge! Figured the only way to see how much that locker helped ya was to pit you against another QTII owner who's as crazy as yourself! haha :p

....wait a second.... thats still a good idea..... SAAALLLLLLL!

I think with a good transfer case my jeep would have the edge over Sal's. I have mud tires and rear locker.

I've been running pretty hard bro. I pretty much shut down for 10hrs and start right back up which after some sleep and hygiene I don't have time for much else. I keep popping in as much as I can.

Here are some recent pictures.

I ended up grabbing a spare DuraTrac. It is only rubbing a little on (1) bolt so I'll have to trim that but no rush. Removed the plasti-dip from the lug nuts and I may keep it chrome or buy black lugs not sure yet. Wheel Spacers are on and it is definitely a different! and no more rub! (Thanks Tristan)

Other then that it was a fun Sunday w/ Matt and his family and some great food + beers!

Thanks guys...I think the 4x front guard, sliders, and rola roof basket will really give that extra pop :) I will hopefully have all of these by next summer

I'll keep my eye out for used roof racks. Might be able to snag a rola up for $100

Your XK would look nice with an American Rebel Rear diff cover!
