So its looking like sliders are a definite for my x-mas/bday present. Still have not decided on SA or 4x Guard.

I may have some left over funds before the next RC trip for a front guard or roof basket to throw the DuraTrac spare up there but we will see how things go. I am excited to get sliders.

On a side note, I am hearing a noise that happens every so often. I don't want to describe it because its hard but I did crawl under and pull/tug on most things that could come loose and no give...so i'll keep playing the guessing game!

EDIT: I plasti-dip'd the plastic piece under the front bumper where the OEM chrome plate goes; it looks much better black with my grill guard ;)

Matt
10-14-2012, 04:27 PM
"when" does the noise happen? And try to describe it.... clunk, grind, etc?

Core XK
10-14-2012, 04:30 PM
Off large drops going a decent speed I'd say? its no noise from the hitch that I can tell. I intend to remove the hitch piece tomorow just to be certain.

It's more of a clunk like something may be loose

07JeepXK
10-14-2012, 05:01 PM
Thats a better noise then the sound my transfer case is making in 4 high..lol you just need to lockate where its coming from. Im willing to bet its an easy fix.

Core XK
10-14-2012, 05:10 PM
I hope so lol I checked the Drive Shaft bolts since we took it off when doing the gas tank skid but I remember matt tightening them real good. He has a much better eye and ear for this stuff so we can always check it out in 2 weeks up RC.

Matt
10-14-2012, 05:23 PM
Check the spare tire.

Core XK
10-14-2012, 05:29 PM
The tire is tight and no wiggle. It is not rubbing on anything but (1) bolt from the hitch. I will double check it tomorrow. I may have not tightened it all the way due to the rubbing on the bolt....now that I think of that it may be what is making noise...

Core XK

I feel like the XK is more stable when turning (especially sharp turns) with the spacers on...

Is this normal or is it just me thinking theres a difference when there's not? lol

So when I was about to leave RC I started my XK and heard a loud grind/shaking. Matt hopped in and we discovered it was my belly guard rubbing my exhaust (must have smacked it enough on trail 22 to move it up).

It is now getting on my nerves because it rubs anytime im on the gas. Shouldn't just (2) washers on the bolts closest to the passengers side give it enough clearance from the exhaust? or am I totally wrong and have to lower the entire thing with washers all around?

Yup washers should be good man but depending on how much you bent it you might have to take it off and pound it back into shape.

haha nope just some scratches no dents on any skids

Yours moved up and rubbed the exhaust? I am hoping to take a drive to my step-dads this weekend to put washers in, and maybe trim the hitch bolts.

07JeepXK
11-01-2012, 05:47 AM
My belly skid was bent up from RC and actually touching the exhaust. So when I stepped on the gas the exhaust was digging into the skid making a horrible noise. When your inside the Jeep it sounded like it was coming from the t case

06JeepXKHEMI
11-01-2012, 05:54 AM
Mine rattles sometimes, Ill be doing the washers soon. Have things on my mind, like which direction Im going with the bumper and MTRs!! Since Ill be chopping up the bumper, I may get stupid and run 285s like Adam, so he cant be "big boy on campus"!!!

07JeepXK
11-01-2012, 06:04 AM
Yeah see my skid was so bent that it didn't even rattle. Just straight up made a horrible noise like something in the drive train was messed up. I might straighten it out this weekend and reinstall it with extra spacers. I feel naked without my skids!

My tires are down to like 65-70% tread already due to the crazy mileage I put on my jeep. Next set will be 34's with tube fenders. The 34's might not see this XK though. It will be gone in January.

06JeepXKHEMI
11-01-2012, 06:07 AM
Oh here we go with the XK gonna be gone again!! hahaha.. Adam besides front bumper and rear part of fender flare, will Ill be ok with pinch weld mod or will I need to do with you did?!!?

Haha.. I got a text a 5:30 this morning from my brother saying he sold his gf's lifted Chevy and got $5500 cash for it last night. He is going to hold onto that and come up with the other $3000 between now and January and buy my Jeep. He has three kids and just got his gf pregnant so he needs a 7 pass vehicle. So we shall see what happens. I dont believe anything till there is cash in my hand.

Andrew. It all depends on what type of tire you are going with (MT/AT...not all tires are the same specs). If you want to run a 33 inch MT then the pinch weld will have to be addressed. What I did to mine isnt bad, I just only did the first half and never got around to welding in new sheet metal to finish it off.

06JeepXKHEMI
11-01-2012, 06:49 AM
Im going MTRs regardless of which size I do, but I cant do the pinch weld like you did, just dont have the knowledge or experience with that..

Keep in mind though I have been modding my jeep for the past five plus years which helped me fit 33's. I have the rear AC delete mod done, cut out the entire pinch weld area, trimmed my front flares, did the sal bumper mod, JBA UCA's, added 1/2 rear lift spacers and extended rear bump stops with a perfect back spaced wheels.

Now with a superlift you wouldn't have to do any of those mods other than find a good back spaced wheel for 33's

06JeepXKHEMI
11-01-2012, 09:29 AM
Yea Im not deleting rear ac, the other things I could probably do.. Depends on how crazy I feel and what the bonuses look like!!

Except if you want to go bigger than 33 or 34. Like me i going to 35s so i will have to make bump stop extensions and rear ac/heat delete I've done the pinch weld already.

I topped my tires off on Monday. The one dropped almost 10 PSI since then. I looked for any punctures and I don't see any. Maybe the valve was leaking air? I didn't feel any but I did tighten the valve. I'll fill it up later and we'll see.

I can't afford a new $240 tire! lol

Corey, check with the seat of the tire on rim, bead. Thats where a cpl of mine were leaking, when you air down dirt/mud cant get in there and cause a leak when you air back up, could be simple as that. To check it get a soapy spone and wipe around the tire, you will find your leak

I tend to not participate in those threads but the "LED lights and brake pads" comment almost made me spit out my soda lol. At least he's not one of those guys that list Mobile 1 oil" as a mod hahaha.

Andrew I dare you to submit for ROTM and list the following mods:
Napa brake pads
Synthetic engine oil
RainX washer fluid (the green stuff)
Febreze vent air freshener

Cleaned my tires and wheels. I didnt see any leak spots so we will see if the PSI drops again.....

On a lighter note, the plasti-dip held up from the RC trip. The only peeling is on the rim which is the easiest to touch up! So im happy about that.

Drove along side a 2005ish WK today. He had a 2" lift, shocks, sliders, tires and wheels from what I could see. Was nice seeing it around here because its rare!

Your reserve is there to make you feel better about jumping like a blanky for a child LMAO If my chute never opened I suppose I would of had time to pull the reserve but I had a opening shock then lost all lift then smacked the ground took about 3 seconds max and it was over. Minimum ATL night time combat jump no moon either so by the time I realized I was free falling again the ground was right there. I did do a text book PLF though hahahahah I think that's what saved me from serious injury or death. My injuries weren't to bad just bad enough were they said I had to ride a desk for the rest of my career so I bailed out took the medical and got out I just couldn't handle doing S1 or something like that just not my thing.

Thanks man. I ended up using a very thing paint brush and Black Pearl touch-up paint. It seemed to work the best and I could just scrape off any imperfections with a razor blade. It still needs a 2nd coat but I love the way it pops and brings out the rest of the black on the XK. I need to get another Hemi badge for the other side of the hood to match.

MMOME Lift? Matt's Modified OME Lift? lol...

Front: OME Springs, Struts, Matt's 1/2 Spacer, RRO UCA's

Rear: OME Springs, 2" RC Spacer

lol I love it. It feels good to have a "real" suspension lift. I feel the difference and I love how much stiffer it is. Pep-boys denied me for an alignment because of the lift. Hopefully the guys who did my alignment before will have no issues. I sent them a message.

I will get some pictures of the new lift and post them up.

lol guys i was poking fun at myself for my decreasing front height.

Our dimensions are very similar right now, I have slightly more height in the rear than Corey. Though I think my tires may be slightly taller...

Here's his dimensions (3/4 tank of gas, right?)

BEFORE W/ RC Lift:
35.75 36.00
36.25 36.50

AFTER W/ OME HD + Strut Spacer + RC Rear Spacer:
36.90 37.00
37.75 38.25

So I did some snow wheeling with this last storm. New suspension and tires performed very well! to say the least. I did have to use 4-low which I am glad still works. I got "Stuck" in a huge pile lol but once in 4-low I was out. One of these days I'd like to lock the XK but that is probably one of the last mods I will do.

On a not so good note, my driver's side sunroof tubes are leaking a bit. Which I cleared both the driver's and passenger's side last summer. I am not worrying about it right now since it's too cold for me to care.

Anyone else enjoy the snow?

That's a good question. I did the Sal bumper mod back when I was running 32's. So it was already done prior to the 33's. I also cut out my pinch welds completely the day of the 33 install. Again before they were actually bolted on. You have more lift than I do up front so you might be good. I guess there is only one way to find out.

$200 is a really good price.

They're the 10" travel version so they're ~26.10" extended vs the 28.10" that I have. Other than that, they're completely rebuildable so if you don't like how they ride you can have them re-valved and/or add the C/D adjuster that I have on the reservoir.

Nice! I think I made the final decision to wait until next winter to purchase a set of (4) 275/70/17 MTR's because I know for a fact they will fit. When this XK is paid off I have full intentions of a SL w/ 35's so I will be happy with 275/70's as they are just under a 33". HOWEVER, I still! like the looks of a DuraTract over an MTR lol....thank you for the compliments on my build. I could not have done without Matt so he deserves some credit. I enjoy the XK every single time I drive it so all of the money and work was well worth it.

$1350 doesn't seem bad for 5 MTR's. I was quoted $1,000 for (4) 275/70's.

Nope..

My 06 was built in 05 and fit 16 with no problems.. Made the tires a little cheaper as well..

I know they make the kevlar in 275 but didn't see the durotracks in that size.. According to Tire rack.. The 275 was my second pick if the 16 rims didn't work out..

I run 89 per the manual. I tried every combination... 89 and 91 with stock tune, then 87, 89 and 91 with the associated superchips tune; 89 w/stocktune was always the best mpg and no significant performance increases with the higher tunes. Though i'm relatively easy on the gas so didn't really put the WOT tuning to the test.

I usually clean my K&N once a year. Take a peak at it... if it's not dirty then don't worry about it.

Haha I get those numbers with my 305/70 MT/R's

I think I've mentioned this somewhere in another thread, but, at least for me, the question of which octane to run and possible tunes (if applicable) is a rather multifaceted one. It's one thing to run various octanes and engine tunes for power and performance reasons, but when some guys throw in what kind of MPGs their getting, I think we need to take a step back and reassess...

While it's common to talk about MPGs and their improvement with octane and tunes (or how they go down the crapper with lifts and added weight), the bottom line for the discussion is really money. I ask, what's the difference between 18mpg running on 87 octane and 18mpg running on 91 octane with a tune? Well, it's still 18mpg, but the difference is the cost of the fuel. I once did some calculating and came up with something like this (for my commute to work):

$27 (to fill half the tank) / 138 miles (my round-trip commute) = $0.1957 per driven mile

So, yesterday I paid $3.29 for 87 octane. It costs me about $0.20 to drive 1 mile, on average. Premium (91) at the same station is $3.59, so it would have cost about $29.50 to fill up. That translates to $0.2141 per driven mile. While this calculation does not take in to account driving styles (burnouts!) or conditions (city, hwy, traffic...), I think it provides a better comparison across setups. So, when the question is asked, "is the 4.7L more fuel efficient than the 5.7L with MDS?" or "which tune (and octane) should I run for better mileage?", I think it's better to just ask "which setup saves me the most money?" So at roughly 1.5 cents per mile difference between running 87 and 91, across 10,000 miles (yearly?) that's $150.

So, at least for me, I'm not looking for power gains, since the XK is my daily driver. I am happy with the stock performance, so I look to save some $$$ where I can. Running a higher octane does not work out for me financially.

I once did a calculation to compare the cost of running my XK vs my wife's turbocharged Subaru Outback. You would think there would be a big difference, but since the turbo requires premium fuel, the costs are almost the same!

Personal preference is obviously the main underlying point. Im never satisfied with the stock performance haha and to me $150 per year to run a higher octane and more performance is well worth it. Reason I mentioned mpgs is because when you factor in the extra weight from tires, lifts, skids and other accessories it says a lot on how much tune helped with daily driving and maintained a more reasonable cost to the owner. Mpg are one of my biggest points with tunes, almost every tune Ive used has improved it while increasing performance

I have to run the 91 performance tune on my jeep because the stupid dealer decided to do a flash on the computer years back without telling me and it was tuned with the Flashpaq already and it messed everything up. If I try to go back the the stock tune the transmission shifts all messed up

Well my real concern was not MPG or money. My concern is what is best for the engine? Will using the manufactor recommended octane (89) pay off in the end? Or am I wasting money filling it up with Plus instead of Regular. I know premium is a no no unless your tuned for it. Which I will not be tuning it anytime soon.

Thankfully I am willing to put out money if it will increase the life of the XK. I am firm on keeping this truck until it dies. Keeping it properly maintained is number 1 on my list.

It wont help or hurt you, even if you did tune it. Running cleaner gas and no off brand cheapo **** will help, but running the 89 or 91 really wont help or hurt the life of the engine itself, just take care of it and dont rag on it like I do and it should run forever!

The octane you run has to do with engine timing and compression. The hemi is capable of adjusting the timing to some degree on its own, which is why you can run 87 or 89 octane. It doesn't hurt the engine. You will not get any benefit running 91 if you don't install a tune, but it won't hurt it.

87 can be run as long as there's no pinging. Pinging (pre detonation) will damage the engines. Every engine varies, so one person not having pinging issues does not mean you won't have pinging issues. There's also other factors that influence the likelihood of pinging to occur- higher ambient temps, cooling system efficiency, engine load (towing or heavy throttle), etc.

Facts aside here's my opinion:
If your vehicle is running well on 89, and you're not putting a lot if miles on it (ie not much cost savings), stick with 89.

Well the reason I bring this up is because I am going from 12 miles a day to 46. So I may switch back to 87.

Best thing to do is fill a tank with different octanes and see how it responds. As Matt said every motor is different, personally Id NEVER run less than 89 in a HEMI but thats me and my preference. Try out all 3 and see what happens. One tank wont hurt anything..

I always ran 87 in mine, even towing.. I couldn't see a difference that was worth the extra money with the superchips tunes at higher octanes.

Yeah man if you're jumping up to that mileage give 87 a shot. Take it easy on the skinny pedal and see how she feels.

I also recommend using one of the top tier stations when possible: http://www.toptiergas.com/retailers.html

Yeah I am going to try 87. I did run 87 when I first got the XK with no issues. Well see. I usually fill up at a Sunoco or Exxon.

Bad day. My "check gascap" warning came on? Nothing wrong with the gas cap. 3 days later and now my check engine light is on which I find ironic....

To top it off. I went to change the fog light which burnt out and the little flap door snapped off so now its duck taped....

Screw you XK.......

Any suggestions on covering the fog light hole? Lol I dont think duck tape will hold forever.

As Matt hinted to I think its a small evap leak. I had my buddy run the codes and reset the check engine light. If it comes back we will test for the leak. I did replace the gas cap because the old one was messed up.

Moving on to the fog light issue lol. First off, that dumb little light is annoying to click in the slot so I gave up since its cold as hell out.

Any suggestions on how to fix the flap door? Lol I still have the door but its completely snapped off. Its currently duck taped on at the moment.

How are the RRO UCA's working out? My stock front left now has a lot of play and I need to replace..... trying to decide between stock, RRO and JBA......

I'm pretty much set on RRO as a good middle ground but would like some input from someone that has and is using them.

I currently have very little drop in the front and am hoping the RRO will address this.

They sell it any any auto parts store, normally they have small single use packets at the register at autozone for like 2 bucks.. or you can buy a couple ounces for a few more bucks..

Then yea put it in the connector to "insulate" the connections from water.

Hold on, won't dielectric grease in a fitting with 2 or more connections (such as a light socket with a positive and negative next to each other on the same plug) potentially create a short?????????

This works on spark plugs because the head is the ground circuit, but for a light bulb, positive and negative are right next to each other and if the grease bridges the gap, you have a short.

Matt - it's all you, can you provide persuasive reasons to either go with RRO or JBA for the front upper control arms?

Dielectric grease is a non-conductive, it just seals out the bad stuff, so as long as each connection still gets mated correctly there won't be any problems.

RRO uses Liberty bushings. ... technically a downgrade from stock. That alone is reason for me not to spend good $$$ on them and pay a few bucks more for JBA (I gave Corey a sweet deal and he's not planning on beating them up offroad as much as me).

In addition I found RROs quality control to be sub-par. My first set of control arm bushings separated on me in less than a year and resulted in metal on metal grinding. They "hand picked" a replacement set to send me (after many emails back and forth) and although "better", they were not made to proper oem arm width like JBA. See more here: http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f67/upper-control-arms-jba-rro-2011945

And Jacob beat me to it, dielectric grease is not conductive.
