View Full Version : 1/2" Spacers for rear suspension.

Matt

I'm going to be ordering some material/tools to make 1/2" thick upper & lower spacers for the rear suspension. My plan is to run ones of each for 1" height increase when I take off my load levellers. ... but know a few guys here are interested in running the 1/2" lower spacers to get rid if some rear sag that's common after installing lifts.

So trying to gauge how much material to buy. Who all would want a set of 1/2" spacers? Figure they'll be $30 shipped for a set.

NOTE: This is not a for-sale thread. I'm making these for myself regardless and will post pics. Just trying to see who else does/might want a set to determine how much material to buy AND and type of tooling I should get. For example if no one wants them, ill make mine a bit more "crude" since they'll be hidden anyways and ill only spend the time making them once. But if there's 3+ more people that want a set, them I'm going to spend the money on the proper hole saws and/or adapters for my friends lathe/mill so it doesn't take me over an hour to make each set lol.

Id want a set for the rear to get a small amount of lift to level it out, are you suggesting the 1/2" spacer?

Matt
08-17-2012, 07:33 AM
Yeah, I don't see a reason really to go less than 1/2". A lot of people go with the load leveller shocks to get .75-1.25 more height out of the rear.

Measure your rear fenders to see the difference. Each vehicle is a bit different

Lol of course man. I figured you and Andrew were in based on our chatting sessions. 3 more people interested would bump my order up to the next sheet size.

Thanks man. I should be good.... Between material, packaging and shipping im expecting ~$25 a set. So I left myself a $5 buffer. Best case for me, I get a 6 pack for each set

Ok i started making some spacers.... method seems to work alright. Just one issue that I wanted to run by you guys.

I made an idiot mistake and ordered a 5" hole saw to make my 5" diameter spacer. WELL, a 5" hole saw makes a 5" hole, and the piece that gets cut out of that hole isn't quite 5".... closer to 4.75".

Functionally this really isn't a big issue (i'll run the ones I already made on my rig regardless) because they cover the full spring area. But wanted to know what you guys thought. If this isn't Kosher, i'll have to get another $40 saw.

Id honestly say if you think it will work then Im fine with it, doesnt look far off from the isolator..

Matt
08-20-2012, 05:06 PM
The engineer in me knows it will work (thats while Ill use the spacers I already made on my vehicle so its not wasted material). The OCD perfectionist in me already has a 5.25" hole-saw in my mcmaster shopping cart. I kind of know what needs to be done and am basically thinking (typing) out loud (if that makes any sense)

Can't wait! Is the spacer a hard plastic or a rubber material like the isolators

Matt

It's high strength impact resistant UHMW Polyethylene.

FYI; 5.25" hole saw will be here Wednesday.

After the lift and tires my dog hesitates jumping in the back....now we'll see after these spacers/shocks Saturday lol

Static
08-22-2012, 02:55 PM
Are the spacers going to be the same top and bottom? I was thinking of going with a 1.5" spacer personally, but may be interested in this.
Whats the reason to go with spacers on both top and bottom rather then one spacer on one end?

Matt
08-22-2012, 03:32 PM
The spacers will probably be the same exact design for top/bottom. I'll verify dimensions when I have Corey's apart this Saturday. Reason for going 1/2 top and 1/2 bottom is to ensure the spring is always captured and to facilitate installation. If I did 1" top, it would be a PITA to get the driver side spring back in. If I did 1" bottom, it would reduce the amount of remaining material that centers the spring/isolater.

Static
08-22-2012, 03:34 PM
Are the problems you are talking about issues with the current budget boost market?

Matt
08-22-2012, 03:49 PM
No because they are either bolted in place (usually the uppers) or have their own self/centering features that center the spring isolaters.

Matt
08-22-2012, 05:21 PM
The 5.25" hole-saw came in today and is the perfect diameter. The spacers are the same OD as the isolaters now. After work tomorrow I may take out my passenger side spring to see what type of ID & chamfer will work best.

Since I didn't want Cory being able to brag he was the first to have these installed... I put a set on my XK today! Threw the steps into a "how to" for reference:
http://www.theultimatejeep.com/showthread.php?2047-How-To-1-2-quot-Rear-Spacer-Install

I still have the load levelers on. Goal is to eventually get some resi-shocks and then put another set of spacers in. Looks good like this though. Rear's a tad higher then desired, but it'll drop a bit when I take the MLLs off and put on another spacer.

Does the spacer sit tight around the spring perch? I ask because the inner hole looks kind of large. Also it looks like we might need some longer bump stop spacers now. If the spring is fully compressed and its not hitting the bump stop then ill rip my flares right off...

Does the spacer sit tight around the spring perch? I ask because the inner hole looks kind of large. Also it looks like we might need some longer bump stop spacers now. If the spring is fully compressed and its not hitting the bump stop then ill rip my flares right off...

It sits at the edge of the radius on the lower spring perch. For it to move one side would have to ride up the radius (which can't happen with the weight on it).

You don't need longer bump stops. Adding the spacer doesn't negate the relationship between axle and body that you have now... in other words its impossible that adding this spacer in would result in more upwards travel of your suspension. The reason my bump stop isnt hitting is because I was in my driveway so the suspension cant fully flex. If my front was up on an incline so more weight was back there, the bump stop would hit like normal.

Matt
08-24-2012, 05:47 PM
The lower perch has a significant radius to it:

07JeepXK
08-24-2012, 05:52 PM
That makes sense. I'm still having slight rubbing full flex though with the 3'3's. I wish they made those pucks we used for the bump stop spacers in a 2.25 inch tall. That would stop my rubbing completely.

Matt
08-24-2012, 05:56 PM
I just snapped this pic to show how the size of the spacer is the same size as the base of the isolator (minus the radius). Some of the other pics make the hole look much bigger due to the taper of the "tube" section of the isolator.

07JeepXK
08-24-2012, 05:58 PM
That that I'm picky, or even care because I know this will work perfect, but would it have hurt to make the outer diameter a little larger?

Matt
08-24-2012, 06:04 PM
It wouldn't have hurt at all.... except that i was pushing my hand drill to its limits with a 5.25" hole saw lol. I could only cut 3-4 out at a time before burning the battery up. It also wouldn't really "help" anything either. They extend beyond where the spring sits.

Matt
08-25-2012, 05:48 PM
Ok guys, just finished installing Corey's set. I'll have 4 more sets done tomorrow that I can ship out Monday.

Right now I have Adam and Andrew lined up, so there's two more sets up for grabs. They'll be sent based on order of PM's.

It only takes 2 days to get more material... so if everyone on that list PM's me, I'll just have to send the other sets later in the week after I get more material in.

OK I have 1 more set of spacers left and 3 guys on the list that were interested.

Here's the deal, these spacers were a bit more challenging to make than I expected... in the sense that they take quite some time with a surface prep disc to clean up after they're cut out.

If there's continued interest I'm thinking of selling them for $45 shipped; instead of a 6-pack of regular beer that'll get me a case of decent beer

I had someone PM me a month or so ago asking for a set of spacers, but they had 1 post and looks like they signed up only to buy something that another member had posted in the FS section. lol that's not exactly the type of "friendship" im talking about... if I know you well enough to bust your balls or buy you a beer, then I'll happily take some of my limited free time to cut you a set of spacers. Everyone else can wait until S.A. is mass producing them and selling them in their store :)

Some pics I took while making these today. Using my friends lathe/mill/drill machine was so much easier than my dewalt hand drill lol. I'm pretty sure I fried both my batteries cutting the last few sets out... one of the reasons i wasn't so keen on making more.

Said and done, took a little over 3 hours today for 3 sets. Should take less time next weekend since I had to figure out the cutting speeds and make quite a few adjustments today.

(Note: It looks like 4 sets, but I already cut a set out of this sheet about a month ago for another member)
