View Full Version : Help me pick out wheels

Matt

Figured I'd start a separate thread so this isn't buried in my 50 page garage thread.

Looking at wheel options.... i'm going with an 18" so I can run ~5.5" backspace and not have to worry about tie rod interference. Ideally i'd like 8.5" wide with 5.5" backspace to help run wider tires (keep them a bit further from the firewall). NOTE that I'm looking for a wheel to run with. 5.5" lift (modified superlift) and probably 305/60/18 tires.

The rig (obviously pre-superlift):

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2012/08/20120819143019-1.jpg

Ultra Crusher: 18x8.5 with either 5.2" (+10mm) or 5.75" (+25mm) backspace

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2012/09/Ultra195CruserMachined-1.gif

Fuel Throttle: 18x9 with either 5.5" (+14mm) or 5.75" (+20mm) backspace

https://theultimatejeep.com/notfound.png

Gear Alloy Dominator: 18x9 5.4" backspace (+10mm)

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2012/09/17564-1.jpg

Its hard to find wheels I like in the needed width/backspace. Especially since manufacturers don't seem to have details of their wheels readily available.

Feel free to comment with opinions on what you think will go best with my rig. I'm going with the "classy but capable" look.... the XK cleans up nice, but looks like it means business. :)

And if you guys happen to find other wheels to suggest, let me know!

EDIT:

To save about 4 pages of reading.... i'm near positive I'll be ordering these:

Still digging the fuel throttle. When do you intend to get the wheels?

06JeepXKHEMI
09-12-2012, 06:46 AM
1) Ultra's- clean but rugged look with the rivets, machined insert sets off chrome accents on the XK
2) Gear's- more rugged look but still holds a classier style
3) Fuel's- I dont like these at all, to busy, to bold and horrible center cap

I like either 1 or 2 you cant go wrong with either, throw the fuel's out!! hahaha

Matt
09-12-2012, 06:53 AM
Yeah the centercap of the Fuels has me rethinking that one.... if it had a cleaner center hub look I think I'd like the styling because its different than the generic "spoke" look of the other wheels.

Corey, not until after the superlift. I want to get my ride height all figured out first. Since I'm running 17s now If need new tires too if I wanted to out them on before the lift which wouldn't make sense (unless I find a nice set of used 18" tires)

Ultra's look the best.

Matt
09-12-2012, 06:57 AM
It would be cool if the spoke colors of the Ultras were reversed.....

06JeepXKHEMI
09-12-2012, 07:01 AM
These arent the Crushers but similar and I believe this is what you are referring to..
https://theultimatejeep.com/notfound.png

you could buy the all black ones and plastidip whatever you want til you get the right look

Matt
09-12-2012, 07:04 AM
Exactly..... that spoke color combination on the Ultras would be perfect. This particular wheels you posted I don't like (don't think they come in the sizes I'm looking at).... but that gets the point across.

06JeepXKHEMI
09-12-2012, 07:11 AM
Yea Im not a fan either just posting what you were referring to.. I actually like the Crushers alot, Im not sure which wheels Im going with when the time comes, was going to do Rockstars but not sure anymore. I plan on painting the wheels matte green and my thought was the chrome/polished parts of the Rockstars will bring out the chrome accents. When it comes to wheels my opinion is to bring out certain this on the car, like Adam did going black wheels, black snorkel with his black trims and windows. I think if you did the all black Crushers, then painted the parts white/silver that you wanted it'd look sick!!

Matt
09-12-2012, 07:17 AM
That was exactly my reason for picking these styles of wheels out. Don't Want all black, I like the machine accents to jive with the vehicle trim.

Will definitely look into the all black Crushers and painting them. ...

06JeepXKHEMI
09-12-2012, 07:29 AM
I would, especially if you plastidip that way if you dont like it take it off and try again!! The other reason Id say do the all blacks and paint, the machined part may get damaged from salt/off-roading whereas the paint you can touch up if anything happens

Matt
09-12-2012, 07:56 AM
Or stick with the current wheel color scheme.....

I need some photoshopping help! Though at worst I know they're equivalent to my current overall look which I like

06JeepXKHEMI
09-12-2012, 08:07 AM
Yea I like the look you have now

Matt
09-12-2012, 09:07 AM

Gear Alloy 726MB. Rimzoneonline has them in 5x5/5x4.5 pattern, 18x9 +10mm

That is always an option. How much did you pay for those wheels new?

Matt
09-12-2012, 10:04 AM
Bought the whole package at once. The wheels are ATX Slot (AX186)

Core XK
09-12-2012, 10:18 AM
Yeah I really want some offset but I'd rather get wheels then spacers. If I find a good set of spacers for cheap I'll go that route though!

I think someone would buy your set because you still have good tread on those duratracs, and the wheels are awesome.

Matt

Andrew needs some tires right? Wink wink...

06JeepXKHEMI

07JeepXK
09-12-2012, 11:22 AM
Yes he does

Matt
09-12-2012, 11:29 AM
They're 245/75/17. Same height just 20mm less width. But looks like my buddy Tim is gonna grab them.

If you guys don't mind, keep an eye out for local Craigslist or eBay tires.... 265/65/18 or 275/65/18. Will need something to hold me over till superlift goes on. :)

Matt's are 245/75/17...same as mine. I love the thin tire because I am big on snow trips up the mountains and soon to be snow wheeling! plus with spacers/offset wheels I think they give it a real nice stance

Matt
09-13-2012, 04:49 AM
OK looks like the balls rolling on this. Unless I find a better wheel this weekend ill be pulling the trigger on those gear alloys Monday.

Next step is to find some used 18" tires so I'm not rolling around on my stock set too long, and then focus on the superlift. :)

This'll work out perfect since ill then be able to figure out how big of a tire I can run with these wheels without much guess work. Key is gonna be finding a nice set of used tires.....

07JeepXK
09-13-2012, 04:53 AM
What size tire are you looking for. I can look around for you.

Matt
09-13-2012, 05:10 AM
265/65/18 should be the most common since they come on F150s, GM 1500s, etc.

275/65/18 will also work. Be a bit tight but they'll look better with the SL until I order bigger tires.

Not sure how common, but 285/60/18 should work OK too.

Thanks!

So, what are the diameters of those choices in inches?

So, what are the diameters of those choices in inches?

265/65/18 = 31.5 x 10.5
275/65/18 = 32.0 x 10.8
285/60/18 = 31.5 x 11.2

I'm shooting for 34s after the superlift is on. Those sizes are just to run now until the lift is on and I can order some real tires.

Don't know how I didn't think of this sooner.. 255/70/18 would work great (JK take offs)

Ok guys im having a list minute decision dilemma!!!

Left Vs Right: GO

X2 hands down!

Matt
09-16-2012, 05:39 PM
damnit i was kind of worried about that. I'm nervous of tire/knuckle clearance with the 5.7" backspace and waiting for trialbyfire to get back to me.

07JeepXK
09-16-2012, 05:51 PM
I said the one on the left in your group message text. But looks like a few others like the one on the right. The right one is a better back spacing. Not sure if the left will clear the superlift steering knuckle

Matt
09-16-2012, 05:56 PM
I didn't get any responses to that text???? lol i wonder if you and the rest of my friends are texting each other and im not getting the replies lol.

Here's a pic of trialbyfire's with 285 wide tires and 5.7" backspace AEV wheels. Looks like I have some clearance there.....

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2012/09/DSC07433-1.jpg

Matt
09-17-2012, 05:00 AM
OK so here's what I'm thinking.... the WK/XK pintlers have 5.7" backspace and I haven't heard of anyone running into issues with them on 2" lifts, only issue was with tie rod interference on the superlift which wont be a problem with the 18" wheel (I hope). Being 9" wide the outer edge of the tire will sit just like the JK pintlers which happens to be the desired wheel for most.

My overall goal is to run the modified superlift with 305/65/18 tires (33.6x12). The 5.0" backspace is going to keep me held to a 285 wide tire and possibly still rub.... Looking at trialbyfires pic with 285s and 5.7" bs it looks like 305s wont be an issue with the spindle.

Worst case, ill sell them to Corey. :p

Thoughts?

stites-xk
09-17-2012, 05:49 AM
I think with a 18" rim you should be fine. The only problem trailbyfire had was at full drop if i recall correctly.

lol Go for it!

I responded like 4 times to your messages and as Adam said I think a few liked the ones on the right. I think both look sick but the ones on the left were awesome :P

Matt
09-17-2012, 06:11 AM
That's really weird that I didn't get any responses to the text I sent out LMAO!

I'm still 50/50 on which ones. I like them both, the ones on the left look more aggressive and the ones on the right have that classy off-road look I like and are more optimal offset..... but I think the ones on the left are going to be cheaper....

Core XK
09-17-2012, 06:13 AM
A decent amount cheaper?

Matt
09-17-2012, 06:18 AM
I'm waiting for a quote but I'm gonna guess $30 less/wheel.

Matt

Nope. The genius didn't send me his address when he said he was available until 1pm. I sent him a text and email asking for his address and didn't hear back until 12 but I was stuck with the kids. Asked him if I could swing by between 1-2 and he never responded.

I think I'm gonna continue looking for JK takeoffs.... or even order a set of falkens. Squeeze some 275/65/18s on now and they'll still look OK after the superlift while I dial in the suspension.

Honestly I haven't decided on which wheel yet. My buddy didn't get back to me with a price yet. If the MO961s (left) are a good deal cheaper, im going with them. If they're about the same, I may go with the MO962s (right) because I like their offset better and they still look good.

Their green camo isnt dark enough to match the XK.. I dont know if you paint over plastidip what will happen and wouldnt want to ruin my stocks. If I get Rubi take-offs Ill just straight paint them a green to match and if I dont like it Ill sand and re-clear

I helped a friend do it to his car and I said just to use the plastic dip but he was insistent that we use paint on top of it because that's what he read on a bunch of online tutorials. I'm not sure how it will affect durability or anything else but it came out fine.

Tim's only one of 2 people (other than me) that's allowed to work on my vehicles :)

Hey Matt, were any of the rims you were looking at hub-centric?

Nope. I just add hubcentric rings to fix that though.

What are hubcentric ring, and how do you install them?

They're just a ring that match the bore of the wheel to the hub diameter. Nothing difficult... and normally $ 10-$15 for a set.

...and this gives the strength of a hubcentric rim, or is it just to get the wheel mounted?

Also, do you know what choices are available for hubcentric rims other than the AEV pintlers?

It adds to the strength and makes mounting easier. There are aluminum ones you can get.... though I just run the plastic ones.

I honestly dont focus on whether wheels are hubcentric or not because it greatly reduces the options. I pick out a wheel I like, and if its not hubcentric I get the rings.
