I just recently switched over to fully synthetic and actually won a free oil change from amsoil on here. I also switched to 89 octane.

I have (2) free oil changes from my local dealership so I will probably use whatever fully synth. oil they have but after that I intend to keep using Amsoil 5w-20.

I want to do anything and everything to get this engine past 200k lol

Thanks and yea im trying to get every mile out of this engine i can. how often do you change your oil? i do about every 2500 to 2700 depending on how it looks, i do mostly city driving so its a little rougher on the engine than highway or country miles.

Honestly I usually trust the Oil Change Required system because if I'm not mistaken it will come on earlier or later depending on how your driving? it ends up being about every 3,000

I only changed the air filter so far so the stock oil filter is still in there. I am thinking of changing it to K&N when Matt and I do my 30k. Mine only has 21k on it so the OEM stuff isnt too badly warrn just yet.

haha I bet!

I am curious to know how long others run between oil changes when running fully synthetic; I have heard you can space the mileage out more between changes when running fully synthetic but I could be wrong.

I run Amsoil OE line and change every 5k.

For anyone changing synthetic oil earlier than that, I'd recommend having an oil analysis run at your next change. You might be surprised and have plenty of life left in the oil. Hell I'm probably changing mine too often at 5k..... but at least I know I'm past the midpoint for oil life.

Glad to hear that lol I changed mine at 21k so I am thinking one at 26k and then when we do my 30k maybe ill do it again...

I have free oil changes for life at the dealership and get their "full" synthetic change there, Im actually due for one this week. I only change every 5k anything less is over kill as Matt said. I only change my 240sx syn oil every 2-3k cause I was constantly at high rpms, rev limiter and side ways!! As far as oil filters, OEM is also what I stick to, my sister had my Jetta for 6 mths, changed it a gas station where they put some cheap filter on.. well it leaked so much it seeped inside the tranny and ruined my brand new Sachs clutch pack. OEM filters only for me

yup, amsoil is one of the few actually full synthetics thats why I put quotes around "full" synthetic as most arent

I will rotate the tires at my next oil change (25-26k)

So how does the "Oil Change Required" light actually work? I wonder if it will activate later after switching to fully synthetic?

Its a top quality oil. I run the OE oil because its a group III synthetic and I'm not interested in going over 10,000 miles between changes ; which you will get from their "full" synthetic XL line.

Amsoil is also a USA company.... :)

Whatever name brand is on sale at autozone when I need to change my oil.. generally I shop for mobil1 though.. change it every 5k.

The service due feature (at least on my 2007) is solely mileage based, and can be changed to several intervals through the EVIC menu's..

Do you suggest me changing it next oil change? or does it matter?

Matt

Doesn't really matter
You can reset it now and just know what mileage to change the oil, then zero it out

I have a lifetime deal with the dealer when I bought the XK new in 2006. All my oil changes are $10.00 and I check it every time to make sure its new oil and new filter. Not sure what brand they use, but they have Pennzoil banner everywhere. And I change it every 3K miles.

I am running M1 5-20 & have since I bought it @ 20k. I change it between 5 to 10k Depending on what type of driving I have done (A lot of wheeling change more often)
I also run M1 for my gearboxes

Matt has a good routine down. Changing at 5k intervals makes it easy to remember and it isn't to early or to long on the oil. Just right. Plus you can work your tire rotations in along with it and depending on how long the mileage takes you in time wise, you can work your vehicle inspections around it as well. Keeps everything organized.

AMSOIL has been out since 1972 and have been growing every year. They were the first to have an API certified synthetic engine oil, that is why you see "First In Synthetics" on their site.

I've used M1 5W-20 for my Hemi ever since I bought the Jeep at 9k mi. I'm at almost 112k now. No oiling issues. I also use the Mopar filter since I can get it at Walmart along with my 5qt jug of M1. I'm also partial to the Napa Gold (otherwise known as Wix) filters. I've heard horror stories about Fram stuff.

Some filters allow the oil to drain back which leaves you with less oil in the top of the motor. Or something like that haha. My dad was explaining it to me but I wasn't really paying attention. I just remember him saying to go back to the mopar filter. My jeep makes a ticking noise in the morning after sitting over night for a few minutes until its warmed up and he said that might help out

Matt

Pretty sure the Mopar filters are made by Purolator.

I either run Wix or Purolator PureOne.

I always change my oil right at 3,000 even though I run mobil 1 so I guess it doesn't really matter what brand filter I use. But if the dealer filters help out ill just keep using them.

I have been using mostly mopar filters on my jk and have been very happy with them. There are a lot of dry start issues with the jk's and it seems people have the best luck with the mopar filters. The anti-drain back valves seems good. I too always change filters at 3k so I don't think any would be bad to use. I just drop by the dealer once a year or so and buy 4 filters and a few air filters. I don't think the prices are bad on them either.

I ran M1 in my jk until I lost the engine at 58k, I now run Castrol GTX. Trying to decide what to run in the hemi now. I have heard good things about Valvoline Durablend but its hard to find in my area it seems.

It doesn't matter if you change the oil every 500 miles, You still want to run a good filter to pick up particulates

10-12-2012, 01:45 PM
So are you saying the mopar dealer filter is bad? When I made that statement I was referring to mopar vs Mobil 1

duneslider
10-12-2012, 01:56 PM
I am yet to see any data showing any of the filters don't pick up particulates. From what I have seen they all filter at nearly the same levels. Some have more pleats which would mean they would last longer before clogging. Some have better anti-drain back valves. I haven't seen any data showing one doesn't "filter" as good as another. I ran cheap fram filters on my yj for nearly 200k miles when the jeep was totaled. I have been very happy with my mopar filter on my JK, I did have one mopar filter that had start up knock. I have used one wix and one mobil 1 and both had start up knock so I went back to mopar.

No, i misunderstood your statement. I thought you felt it didn't really matter and could run a $1.50 ebay filter because you changed your oil so much.

Mopar/Wix/Purolator/etc are all fine.
