View Full Version : Side exhaust?

Ive seen a few WKs do a custom side ehaust, some with a true dual set up and a few with single side. I dont like how they show oout the side, looks tacky, but my question is if I did a side exhaust the dumped downward tucked up where exhaust is now how would that work off road, say in water and mud?

You cant dump the exhaust under the vehicle on an SUV because the gasses will get into the passenger compartment.

Mud could pose an issue if you get stuck too....

Figured as much, I dont really see how to make it work and look good at the same time, just thought Id throw it out there

Just a thought, if I were to angle outward would it make a difference? Only reason Im considering is I can get it done cheap and I love the sound people are getting with the true dual set up..

I forget what the rules are.... but it has to be within an inch or two from the edge of the vehicle since the exhaust isnt coming out fast. it'll end up under your pinch weld and get crushed offroad.

Awesome thanks Matt, Ill see what I can do about maybe running all the way back and having the set up now but on both sides, really love the true dual sound

I though there wasnt enough room under our XK's to do true duals?

Matt
11-20-2012, 10:18 AM
I bet if you put the spare tire on the roof or rear bumper you can run SI/DO muffler with duals out the back...

cabledog25
11-20-2012, 10:20 AM
I'll have to look into that

06JeepXKHEMI
11-20-2012, 10:24 AM
There's always a way!! I have no use for my spare at least on a daily basis so this is probably what Ill do..

11-20-2012, 10:41 AM
Yeah im the same way so ill probably give it a try also

You could prolly fit two mufflers in the same area that the large stock muffler is mounted. Just stagger them and run a pipe to each.

11-20-2012, 12:16 PM
Thats what Im thinking, Im going to be talking to my shop to see what we can do have to get underneath and see.. Im also considering doing an open exhaust with resonators in place of mufflers, I know this will be LOUD but who doesnt like that HEMI sound

Matt
11-20-2012, 12:35 PM
Put the resonators (or mufflers) back where the spare tire "was" and make a skid plate that mounts to the rear supports to protect them.

Matt
11-20-2012, 12:36 PM
Then you can throw some dynomat down in the cargo area and I bet interior drone wont be too bad...

06JeepXKHEMI
11-20-2012, 12:38 PM
So run straight pipes to the spare tire area, weld mufflers/resonators in place dynomat the underside..??? Hhhhmmmm might be on to something here..

I like the direction this one is going

Matt
11-20-2012, 12:42 PM
Exactly, and skid plate protection beneath that'll be easy to make.....

Lol I may even look into doing this!

06JeepXKHEMI
11-20-2012, 12:46 PM
I like where this is going to, this is why I love this forum so much, a bad idea turned into a great one!!! Im going to look underneath this weekend, instead of doing resonators which Ive researched and seems like over kill, Im considering the Flowmaster Super 10 series, staggered in stock location or in spare tire location..

Matt

Check with the exhaust shop.... but you need to be careful staggering. You could end up with two different exhaust tones that, when combined, sound horrible.

The goal is to keep pipe lengths as close to equal as possible.

06JeepXKHEMI
11-20-2012, 12:56 PM
Matt, would know how much louder 2 resonators would be than those super 10s?

Matt
11-20-2012, 01:01 PM
Ive never heard a resonator only setup like that so im not sure..... I think those dual 10s will be plenty loud man!

06JeepXKHEMI
11-20-2012, 01:08 PM
Yea I agree, so if you were to do this you would run pipes back to spare tire area and weld in mufflers, where would you have exhaust exit? Id like to keep it hidden as possible

06JeepXKHEMI
11-20-2012, 01:14 PM
What im trying to determine is should I get the side inlet/outlet or center inlet/outlet? I have to go 3" when the headers go in the mid pipes are 3" so I cant downsize there

Matt
11-20-2012, 01:18 PM
I would run a single 3" back from the cat flange to the front/center of the spare area. From there id split it and run your mufflers equally spaced, just inside each support rail. Then exit out of the mufflers to shoot down and angled out just below the bumper on each side.

I may do something similar but run a 3" SI/2.5" DO super 40...

11-20-2012, 01:21 PM
Ok got it, thanks man! Im going to order these mufflers as soon as I speak with shop. I guess the only difference is Ill be running duals compared to your single for the fact Ill be going to headers soon..

Matt
11-20-2012, 01:23 PM
Yeah I forgot about your headers!

06JeepXKHEMI
11-20-2012, 01:31 PM
Headers will be after new years and after paying my taxes, Im 1099 so I have to pay in so after thats done the headers are a go. This way Ill have the rear part figure out!! Heres a clip of a Ram with single 10 series..

So I decided on this set up. thanks Matt for the help and advice as usual. Ill post up pics and videos once its done, cant wait to hear the HEMI!!!

Can't wait to see/hear how it turns out man!

This thread definitely gave me ideas for what im going when a rock opens up my stock muffler like a can opener.

I don't think many of us use our spares on a daily basis. At least I hope not!!! ;)

Yea even if I did its the wrong size tire, plus MTRs are being ordered in a couple weeks so hopefully need for a spare on daily use wont be there. Ill just throw it on the roof or cargo area when wheeling

Matt

Carry a plug kit and portable OBA like the VIAIR and that'll take care of 95% of flats ive seen (just dont drive too long on the flat and ruin the tire)

Yea me to! As I said before this forum is the best just for these purposes, other forums are useless, half the time they just rag on you for your idea rather than promoting it.

Hopefully I can get this done soon, i ordered the mufflers just need to run everything by the shop and get it done

How much is the VIAIR kit you have?

How much is the VIAIR kit you have?

There are some slightly cheaper versions... but this one is highly recommended:

So I did go to muffler shop after I couldnt get the Camaro. Have a great idea of what we are going to do, instead of Flowmaster 10s, Im going Jones Full Boar Single Champer mufflers which I heard a HEMI with and is orgasmic!! Once these come in we will be good to go.. Ill keep everyone updated

So mufflers get here Friday and Saturday the exhaust will be getting done. Plan is as Matt and I discussed, running duals from cats back over rear axle where single chamber mufflers will be installed in place of spare tire. From there the down spouts will be down and out still hidden from site like stock. I have a feeling this is going to be loud and may ponder the dynamat idea Matt had mentioned, however my question is will the dynamat sustain the heat from exhaust?

Matt
11-27-2012, 08:37 AM
Install the dynamat inside the xk, under the carpet. Go as forward with it as possible, definitely take out the 3rd row to get the mat under there.

I cant wait to see how this turns out!!!

Erk469
11-27-2012, 08:57 AM
Dynamat is a great idea, yes it will last from the heat from the exhaust.

Still not done he got swamped as its the 1st so people are flooding in.. doesnt help the stock pipes from cats are doubled so he's gone thru 6 blades cutting the pipe. It will be done today and is coming together very nicely.. As soon as I have pics I will post and will get a video of driving, WOTs and MDS sounds to get an idea of what its going to be like.. He says its going to sound like an SRT8 with exhaust, which is music to my ears!

Hahaha I know everyone is anxious. Ill get some today only had a chance to get a couple yesterday, the guy was busy as hell! Its still not 100% done, a few leaks and rattles to work out but it is extremely loud! What I may do to quiet it down is had a dual in dual out muffler where stock location is as right now its straight back duals from cats over rear axle with the single chamber mufflers welded in with down spouts. It a bit to raspy for my liking right now, which is probably caused by leaks/rattles but my thought is adding the muffler in the middle where stock would be and help reduce sound..

Matt
12-02-2012, 04:18 PM
How would putting the muffler back in the stock location reduce sound? The further back you put it the quieter it'll be... unless there's more insulation above where the stock muffler location is to reduce noise; but that can be fixed with the dynomat.

A DI/DO should help out though. Thinking of going with a Super 40??

07JeepXK
12-02-2012, 05:22 PM
He's talking about adding a third muffler in the location where the OEM muffler was to make the entire system quieter

Matt
12-02-2012, 05:35 PM
OOooohhh.... I didn't pick up on that. Interesting idea!

06JeepXKHEMI
12-02-2012, 06:17 PM
Yes exactly what Adam says, adding a D/I D/O muffler where stock exhaust is retaining true duals but making the exhaust note deeper/quieter at the same time. I had a feeling this set up would be loud and would have to play with it a bit to get it right, but after talking with my dad and the my buddy who did it, this will work out to giving the best sound
