Just need to vent....

A few days after making the XK my DD again I get a nice crack in the windshield. :(

Looks repairable, but just too big for me to try repairing so I set up an apt to have it repaired Saturday morning. $170.... damnit.

Look at that beauty

That sucks man! $170 is a hit but I know all to well about broken windows, the drivers door, rear door and 1/4 glass were $1300 to replace!

And im pretty sure our windshield is almost that much alone due to the rain sensing wipers and auto headlights... hence why im not trying a self repair kit!

That sucks. That's why I love USAA Ins! My glass is covered with $0 deductible. It pays to be military....well sometimes.

Same with my insurance, its a Fla mandate that insurance replaces windshields at no cost, another reason I will stay a Fla resident!!

I have GIECO and they cover it.

I have Usaa, and I had a crack from side to side and it covered it for 0$ but I felt sorry for the guy replacing my windshield in 100 degree heat, so I cooked him some at work, when he came to my job.

I got back on the phone with geico.... the rep this morning didn't know that comprehensive deductibles are waived for windshield "repairs".

Now I have to keep my fingers crossed its repairable.... $750 deductible will make a new windshield hurt. :( (pretty sure its an expensive windshield due to rain sensing wipers)

I paid about $220 for rain sensing aftermarket windshield with install when in Cali so it's not "that" bad when compared to the deductible if it can't be repaired.

Anybody know how much it costs to replace the driver side window? got alot of deep scratches

Matt

Id personally get a new window from a scrap yard and replace it myself.

What caused the deep scratches? If its something inside the window track it will mostlikely just scratch the new window. I have a lot of scratches in my drivers side window too from off roading and getting mud/dirt down in there.

im not sure they have been there for a good while now, but the main reason im wanting to replace it is because im going to get them tinted and im pretty sure the scratches will mess with the tint

I hit an Owl last christmas so it totaled my windshield. It was 400 to replace with an OEM one & it was with Rainsensing, so it is not that bad to get replaced.

I have the deep scratches as well on my windows from offroading and my limo tint is fine with it.

Hope this helps

Tint goes on the inside..... if the scratches are outside you should be alright

yeah if i remember correctly they were on the outside. thanks guys

$400 is doable... I was expecting a lot worse.. we'll see what happens Saturday morning.

I've replaced my windshield twice (!) at about $320 a pop with the rain sensing wipers.

What company did you use? $320 is only 2x the repair cost.

I'll have to look them up when I get home.

I don't know about ya'll, but when the safelite came to repair my windshield, it was just a regular windshield. The little black box that is stuck to your windshield is the rain sense, not the wipers.

Yes, but its how that sensor "sees" through the windows. For instance all windshields block UV light... so if the sensor uses a similar wavelength to detect rain, that portion of the windshield is specially designed to allow it to work properly and that increases costs. Ive seen some windshields upwards of $900 due to specialized features like that.

Glad to hear ours doesn't seem to be one of the expensive ones!

Here you go, Matt...

American Mobile Glass of NJ
35 Oak Ridge Road
Newfoundland, NJ 07435
(973) 697-0808

In October 2011 I paid a total of $319.93 including tax for an OEM windshield with the rain sensing wiper option. I had a choice of the glass with the tinting across the top or without. I went without. Same price, though. They came to my house for the install. They will come to your place of business as well.

Good luck!

So are the going to try to fix it or are you just looking to replace it. Because I'm sure the crack will spider out more between now and then.

Matt
11-29-2012, 05:02 PM
Thanks mark!

Adam, im having them "fix" it but its already gotten bigger so I think ill need a new one in the near future. Im hoping the "repair" slows it down.

I just found my receipt and even though I didn't have to pay for it, it came to a total of $227.

Depending on your insurance and/or state windshield repair or replacement should cost you nothing.

I don't have much of a choice. Can't be repaired.

Safelite was $390 installed for a new one.

I just tried calling American Mobile Glass but they closed 6 minutes ago. So i'll give them a call Monday.

Matt

Quick update...

Safelite is $399 total and American Mobile Glass is $329 total. Since Mark recommended American Mobile, I feel better about giving them a shot and saving $70 as well. :)

My .02.
I use a company called Glass Doctor.
They are national and the reason I did was they offer a 1 year warranty that if the windshield is chipped or cracked within 12 months they will repair or replace it. I'm looking at windhield #4 right now. Windshield 3 was repaired once under warranty, but then it took a rock that cracked it after the warranty expired. Their cost was similiar to Safelite. I'm holding out thru winter before I replace it again.
SA needs to make windhield armor....

Matt

Lol windshield armor... that would be a great april fools item to put on the SA website!

Hey Mark, do I have to go to inspection again to get a new sticker?

Nope. They peel it off and stick it back on the new glass!

They will just transfer over the inspection sticker.

Matt

That's cool. Wasn't too big of a deal regardless, there's an inspection station close to work that I could hit up during lunch.

New windshield is in. Glad to have this just about done.

The guy who installed it has a buddy that just bought a 2006 XK and would probably be into lifting it and wheeling. So i told him to send me a message and check out some of our youtube vids. Maybe we got another member & Tri-State XK wheeler!
