As many of you guys have been reading I did get my true dual exhaust set up done, well 65% of it anyways. Right now its not complete, few leaks to fix and getting it mounted better as it bangs around a bit, but a work in progress indeed. As of now Im not a big fan of it, to raspy probably caused by leaks and rattles but its loud! To get it where I want it, Im adding in a Flowmaster 44 D/I D/O muffler where the stock location is, hopefully this deepens the sound and takes the left over raspyness away. Ill keep everyone updated on the progress but here are some shots and a quick video for you to enjoy!

The picture below is where the Flowmaster 44 is getting put in
https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2012/12/100_0159-1.jpg
This is also something I do not like which will be changed, the mufflers will be horizontal instead of vertical. I dont like seeing the mufflers and they will get hung up when wheeling.

In this picture you can see where the pipe would bang against the triangular support, this will be changed as well.

Like Ive been saying its a project and a good starting point, a lot more difficult then cat back systems available. Here is a video.

Not bad at all for a first go at a custom exhaust like this. Im really looking forward to see how the final product comes out and to get a listen while you're climbing a trail at Rausch!

Thanks guys, its a work in progress. Saturday should be the final stage, I think adding the other muffler in will give it a better sound, right now sounds to much like a pick-up so one step at a time. Matt, you think by adding the d/i d/o is a good idea?

I think the DI/DO super 44 would probably be good by itself and you wouldn't need the 10s in the back. Not sure how it'll sound with all 3 mufflers...

Well I shot my buddy a message who has an SRT8 Challenger and is certified SRT8 tech, what I am doing is what he has on his Challenger, DI/DO 2 Chamber muffler with 3" pipes and where stock resonators are he has Super 10 series and has a nice sound. The difference is I went 2.5" pipes but everything else will be similar. He said with just the single muffler or what I have now it will be raspy which I hate.. We'll see what the end product is Saturday, worst case I cut off rear mufflers with down spouts..

Looking good, and do see where they will get caught up while wheelin. Will Listen later today when not at work.

And the video of the interior sound..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lxJhtS-3-Sg&feature=plcp
With the windows down the camera kind of deadens the sound but it gives an idea of how it drives.

Matt

Dude... at 40-41 seconds in the video it looks like the H pipe isn't welded onto the other side. Did they cut the holes and only weld one side on? That would definitely make the exhaust sound raspy and also get a rattle from those pipes hitting each other...

06JeepXKHEMI
12-03-2012, 04:19 PM
It isnt a H pipe, its just a bracket to keep the exhaust from rattling together, I thought the same thing

Matt
12-03-2012, 04:20 PM
Ah ok. Were you planning on putting an H pipe in to equalize the pressures?

06JeepXKHEMI
12-03-2012, 04:22 PM
Thats kind of what I was thinking but not sure with the new idea, what do you think?

Matt
12-03-2012, 04:29 PM
I'm wondering if that was part of your problem from the start.... an H pipe would've helped the tone out.

Don't really need it with the DI/DO muffler though. And if that's what your friend with the SRT8 is running and it sounds good, might as well go with what you know works. I'm just surprised there wasn't a crossover pipe in your true duals setup from the start.

06JeepXKHEMI
12-03-2012, 04:34 PM
Well like I said he wasnt done with it so maybe he was going to do that when he completed it. My pops said the same as you, run just the 44 and see what it sounds like. Since he has to cut mufflers anyways Ill have him run it with the muffler only and see how it sounds, if I want to put 10s on I will

Matt
12-03-2012, 04:38 PM
I think thats a good idea... then if it sounds good you don't have to worry about orienting those 10's to tuck them out of the way while also having the tailpipes exit in similar/equidistant locations.

Depending on how the DI/DO super 44 sounds on yours, I may do a SI/DO in the future...

Im also doing the 409s one, which is under their raceing muffler section, not sure if its different from the one you are looking into but just keep that in mind

Matt

Im waiting until a rock chews mine up.... so it may be a while until I get another baby carrier to allow me to be aggressive offroad again

06JeepXKHEMI
12-03-2012, 04:48 PM
Yea I hear ya I remember you saying you arent getting it until you need it.. We will see Saturday what I end u doing, assuming I go with just the 44, I can have both tips right next to another rather than across from one another as you said. I will play with it and figure it out, either way it needs to change from what it is now

A true dual like what you currently have will never sound good due to the back pressure. You need some sort of H or X pipe in there. I know this isn't finished and you have a few kinks to work out but you will get it how you like it.

Bobs exhaust sound really good now. He swapped in a two chamber flowmaster stainless steel race muffler in place of the MBRP muffler. His is all 3 inch stainless from the cat back.

So do you think if I did an H pipe then the D/I D/O muffler with pipes straight out it'd sound good or do you think I need the rears still?

Matt

Your DI/DO muffler is going to be close enough to the headers so you shouldn't need a crossover pipe. The muffler works as the H pipe in that case.

If you werent adding the D/I D/O muffler, then I would recommend just adding either an H or X pipe to what you currently have. If you are definitely adding the D/I D/O muffler then an H or X pipe wont be needed.

Ok perfect, Ive been doing a lot of thinking about what Im going to do, adding the D/I D/O is definitely happening, it comes in tomorrow. So installing that and may just to straight pipes right next to eachother like Matt suggested, I think his word was equidistant? hahaha I hope this gives me a sound I want, honestly not happy right now with it but I keep telling myself its a work in progress

07JeepXK
12-04-2012, 09:24 AM
You should install the D/I D/O muffler with the 10's still in the rear and see how it sounds. If you dont like it you can just cut off the 10's in the rear and just run the D/I D/O muffler with straightpipes that dump in the rear.

06JeepXKHEMI
12-04-2012, 09:27 AM
That was my original idea, Im going down to the shop today to draw out a plan. I dont want to annoy this guy and keep changing it, Im sure what I paid him will eventually wear his patience down and ask for more $$ hahaha

Andrew, this is really coming together bro.....I really love it. I especially like that you have the exhaust tucked under and not coming out the back like most people do.

06JeepXKHEMI
12-05-2012, 08:24 AM
Thanks man I was going for a completely hidden set up so you cant see anything but you couldnt mistake the sound! Should be all set Saturday and Im leaning towards Matts suggestion of doing the D/I D/O muffler alone with straight pipes from it being equal in length along rear slider.

Update: I bought an IMCO Performance 50 muffler as well. Did some research the SRT8 Jeep guys are raving about this muffler, its a cross between the Flow 40 and 50 so I figured why not give both a try and see what I like. I know Im dumping $$$ into this but I want the right sound so Ill try both and go from there. The specs on the IMCO is 17" long, like the Flow 50, but everything else measures like the 40. I found a video of it on the 05 Ram HEMI to it should sound similar. Guess and check til I get it how I want it!!

I love how you're attacking this. Once you get it dialed in this'll have to be a stickie in the performance section!

06JeepXKHEMI
12-06-2012, 07:34 AM
Thanks man, its one of those things you have to do right, I know the sound I want and Ill get there Saturday. Im thinking the IMCO is going to be the better option, although I want a nice deep but loud exhaust its still a 45k Jeep new, dont want it sounding like an 88 Ford pick up!! I hope once I get it complete this will help guide people, its ultimately what we are here for!!

ahaha Im not even going to post on JC.com, not worth my time. Ive had a few people PM on JF.com thats why I posted it, to many negative people and comments. The only reason I post of other forums is to give people ideas, I could careless if someone doesnt like it, but I embrace suggestions and insight. Have no time for some of clowns out there!!

Matt
12-06-2012, 09:13 AM
When people send me PMs there I usually send them a link to here with the info they're looking for. Search feature there sucks unless you pay. And due to the format of everything being in one place, your exhaust thread will disappear into the abyss of old threads if it doesn't get bumped.

06JeepXKHEMI
12-06-2012, 09:17 AM
True, I just dont want to be "banned" as there are some good threads on there and these people who run these other forums administer them like its some big exclusive deal, when to your point in JC.com we are all here sharing info to support out hobby! None the less, I will update it and see what happens.
On a brighter note at least you get to hear a different muffler when a rock ruins yours, I think this IMCO is the route Im going, with straight pipes back

Matt
12-06-2012, 09:36 AM
Definitely interested in the IMCO sound....

06JeepXKHEMI
12-06-2012, 09:42 AM
Me to. probably the route Im leaning towards, Im going to put that one on first as I think it will quiet it down to where I want it. My guy said he'd give me what I paid for Flow since he works at muffler shop and i got it cheaper than his wholesale cost!

06JeepXKHEMI
12-08-2012, 06:29 AM
Jeeps at the shop and will be done today. Final decision is D/I D/O with straight pipes back, Ill let everyone know which muffler I run, leaning towards IMCO. Pics today for sure, video when I have time family coming in today and STEELERS game tmrw!

Andrew. If you look at the third picture in you post above, your passenger side parking brake cable has melted a little. You need to zip tie that up away from the differential casting. This is a normal problem on our vehicles and I had to do the same to mine

Finally got a chance to listen to the video.... it sounds great man, and i know your camera doesn't capture the deeper tones either. Can't wait to hear it in person!

06JeepXKHEMI
12-11-2012, 06:58 AM
Thanks man, the camera mic really sucks so the deeper ones you dont really hear it cancels them out. Im really happy with the final product, going to paint it this week. Should I paint the whole thing or just the rear section? Hopefully we can schedule a good time for Rausch, January is the playoffs, hopefully the STEELERS will be in it but I still wont want to miss it!!

Matt
12-11-2012, 10:39 AM
I would paint as far forward as possible.

06JeepXKHEMI
12-11-2012, 10:48 AM
Well I can get to the whole exhaust easily right up to cats so Ill plan on doing that.. How many coats does it usually take and do I have to clean it with anything before or just spray

Matt
12-11-2012, 10:51 AM
Couldn't hurt to spray some brake cleaner on it to clean off any grease from driving around. Probably 2-3 coats.
