EDIT: TRIP CHANGED TO FEBRUARY 10th

It's about time for our annual January wheeling trip!!

Best date for me is Sunday January 6th since I'm off on the 7th. I can't do Saturday because two of my friends are coming who still work at the shop.... one of which just lifted his XJ and put 35s on so it'll be his first wheeling trip with that rig.

Anyone from here interested?

FYI I'll be taking it somewhat "easy" with my XK since its a DD and I didnt rebuild the front end yet like I wanted to after the last trip. I actually may hitch a ride in my buddies XJ...

I'll be in Mississippi for a few weeks in January going through the demobilization process. I'm supposed to leave that weekend. Sometime in February would work better for me.

I doubt I'll be able to make this one.. new house pending.. and XJ still in disrepair. I think I have the radiator leak plugged, but it needs a battery and axle seals since it leaks out both sides.. I'm sure from the last trip there is a ton of water in the front diff.. I need some time to sort it all out and make sure it's up to the task since flat towing it sucks, and I don't have a trailer yet.

Im good for the 10th as of now, will have to plan after the new year and at least closer to date.. My bday is 3/1 so Id like to keep it far enough away from that date, I may end up in a foreign country this year!

I'd love to go but with a newborn at home now it will be a couple of months until I get back out there. I will definitely be going to the PA Jeep Show in July - any of you guys go there?

When you guys go - what kind of trails do you hit? I just want to know what I am up against. When I had my 5.9 ZJ I'd go through anything Red/Purple and if I wanted to break something - black - but with this WK being my DD blue trails are the most I could comfortably do.

Matt
01-18-2013, 02:37 PM
No problem man. I won't be going to the PA jeep show... my 3rd is due June 2 so i'll have a newborn, 2 yr old and 3.5 yr old in July

I'm hoping to get one more trip in after this one.... but I also mentor a highschool robotics team, so depending on how well we do when the competitions start my weekends might be shot all the way through May.

As far as trails, I normally have a good route planned that allows everyone to have fun, from stock to highly modified. The main route we travel is all greens that brings us past some fun blue turn offs and black/red obstacles. It keeps the group relatively close and allows the guys who want to stay on greens watch some of the "fun" while others try the obstacles.

Scott do you have a belly skid yet? Andrew is selling his brand new 4XG. My buddy Tim was going to buy it but it looks like they're going to focus on their TJ instead of the WK for wheeling now.... If you don't have a skid you should buy it from him; i can bring it back from Rausch for you.

Matt - which skid is it? Do you have a link by chance? what is he looking to get for it?

Awesome man!

I drive out there Saturday evening and stay at the Comfort Inn. You're more than welcome to convoy with me but you'll have to meet me in Hamilton. I mentor a highschool robotics team and we meet every Saturday 8am-3pm.

I dont think he ever made a for sale thread... its a brand new 4xguard belly skid that protects the catalytic converters and trans pan.

Around 8:30. Goal is to be heading out on the trails by 9:00.

To be completely honest man, you might want to consider leaving around 6-7PM Sat night. It's not a very long drive so you'll be at the hotel by 10:00... have a beer or two and then go to bed. It'll make waking up & wheeling the next day a lot more enjoyable.

I've done the 1 day trip before... figured it'd be no worse than the 1 day trip skiing at Hunter Mtn (3.5 hr drive). For some reason, even though skiing take a lot more energy than wheeling, there's just something about "sitting" in a vehicle from 5am to 10pm that's even more exhausting. Hence I always drive up the day before now.

I know just what you mean - I usually go up friday afternoon, wheel all day Saturday and then head home Sunday morning. My situation changed dramatically in the fall though - my wife gave birth to our twin boys 10 weeks premature and I am sorry to say only one of the boys survived. He is doing very well but is very needy at bed time. So unless he becomes a better sleeper i'll have to drive up very early Sunday. At this point even doing that is worth it. Starting over with my wife's WK was hard enough after selling my ZJ that was the ultimate trail machine. So one way or another I will be there even if I have to meet you guys out on the trails. I know that place now like the back of my had so if you say "meet us at snake bite "I'll say see you at the end of the trail!" My jeep's not high enough or armored enough (yet) to do that trail!

Matt
01-20-2013, 09:22 PM
Hey man i completely understand. I'm sorry to hear about your boy not making it, but glad the other is doing well. My friends had their twins this past summer at just 24 weeks.... both still have some battling to do but they're doing well.

If you can't leave until Sunday morning I can make sure I set up a route that'll make it easy for us to meet up when you get there. So just keep me informed what your plans are as the date gets closer and we'll work it out.

I received a picture of my jeep the other day from the old lady and apparently my water pump is leaking coolant everywhere. I'll have to take a look at it when I get home from Mississippi. Other than that I should be able to make this trip.

Remove the maybe, I'll be there.. driving the XJ though so hopefully no issues :)

XK got traded in today, so I'll be offering parts from it to RC people first to save on shipping and convenience.
So the list.. everything is obviously used, could use paint or whatever..

12 Bolt Differential 4xGuard $75
Belly 4xGuard $100 (***EDIT*** missing the special J hook bolt thingy, I used a longer bolt with out threads on the end so I could put a box end wrench and vise grips on at the same time to tighten it $2 worth of hardware needed/not included)
Front 4xGuard $125
Flashpaq 3875 $100 *XK was flashed back to stock, I think you have to pay superchips to take ownership or something though*
Aux Input thingy (RECNAV 2006/7) $35 - This replaces either the sat input with 2 aux rca inputs
Rear cargo area brackets to hold cover (XK Specific) $5 -home made nothing special but opens a lot of storage space up (mostly only want the $5 so it goes to someone who plans to use them..)
Crap Carriers (XK Specific) $priceless - my mommy made them for me :p fabric panels with a couple of pockets and "molle" type loops to attaching crap to, they cover the 3rd row seat windows and attach with factory screws - $10

01-28-2013, 08:11 AM
Ok looks like as much as it will make for a VERY Long day, I will be driving up Sunday Morning... my new little (he's tiny) 3 month old Son is requiring too much team work at night between my wife and I right now for me to come up the night prior to the run. I will just leave my house at 6 am and meet at the Park or worst case out on the trails. Come hell or hi water I will be there. At this point I will do what ever I need to do to get there!

On another subject though...

What do you guys do for lunch out there on the trail? Whether this sounds corny or not the group I used to go with would bring a loaf of bread and a container of peanut butter and Jelly and eat down at the bottom of the quarry. Do you guys just bring sandwiches or do you starve and eat after?

06JeepXKHEMI
01-30-2013, 06:15 AM
Yea as of now I'm still in, however I have a strange noise when braking. It's almost like the sound ABS makes or metal on metal. Sounds like the rear but It's not the brakes, they are near new. I'm hoping It's nothing to do with the diffs it only happens under normal braking under 10-15 MPH. Any thoughts on what this could be?

Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2

Matt
01-30-2013, 06:35 AM
Rust on the brakes from all the recent moisture/salt? Could also be a suspension creak or bushing noise.... spray some silicone lube on the sway bar bushings, control arms, strut piston..

06JeepXKHEMI
01-30-2013, 06:37 AM
Yea my dad said the same thing on the inside of the rotor may have rust and the pad rubs it when breaking.. Ill spray those things down and see what happens, could water in the diff make that noise or similar issues?

Matt
01-30-2013, 06:40 AM
Doubtful..... its easy to change the fluid though if you've been through deep water recently and wanted to be safe.

06JeepXKHEMI
01-30-2013, 06:44 AM

Jacob are you still planning on bringing your grill? If so we should probably get a head count for what people are going to bring.....we have a good sized group.

Let me know what you want - I can bring food.... I live at Costco most weekends... (oh god the samples are so good!)

Everyone else please add yourself so we can get a head count.

I figure I'd get a sleeve of Burgers (the big kirkland ones) and big package of hot dogs and buns are dirt cheap so I'll pick that up. Sound good?

Weather's looking really good for Sunday though...

Also just an FYI it looks like most of my friends are still bringing up subs/hoagies for lunch. So we won't be overworking Jacob too much on the grill lol.

Ok so I have an issue, small one at that.. I ordered a CB coax and antenna but order was cancelled from being out of stock. Main reason I ordered is I cant find any CB equipment in this area, not even radio shack carries anything. Anyone have a suggestion on where I can get cable and antenna before wheeling Sunday?!? I guess I could just rely on the shorty antenna with battery pack the CB comes with...

hoaxci5
02-07-2013, 12:23 PM
I have a magnetic one I'll bring with me you can use for the day if the other cable/antenna I have for the mount doesn't work out.

nice thanks! I guess CBs are really a dying technology, not sure why NO ONE carries anything

Ive got my new video camera mounted inside the Jeep on the windshield, I can take pics, videos and everything, not a GoPro but it will get the job done, specifically made for in-car videos and has the anti-shake setting and night modes, its pretty cool..

So is Adam out?

We might be losing my buddy in his KJ....has a grinding noise in his front end. Not sure i'm going to have time to do anything with it tomorrow before heading out.

I did all my prep last night knowing it was going to really crappy out. I disconnected my rear sway bar and loaded up my spare. Also packed my 1/2 inch ratchet, extensions and 18mm socket to disconnect the front sway bar.

Luckily my XK still squeezes into my garage lol.

Tomorrow i'll pack up my toolbox. Normally i bring enough tools to take apart just about anything on a vehicle. Though I dont think we'll need anything this trip, i'd rather have it and not need it :)

Now that I have all my tools out of storage I'm in a much better situation than I was in, but extra tools never hurt anyone.

I'm still rolling with my damaged radiator, so if you have a magical fix better than the RTV that has the hole mostly plugged, I'm all ears :)

Damn man.... drain some fluid out, squish some JB weld in those fins, refill before you leave and you should be golden.

hoaxci5
02-08-2013, 07:19 PM
The rtv had it handled until just the other day, then it sprung a small leak, so I hit it with some more rtv. Eventually when it warms up I'll put a new radiator in it, but for now it is what it is, and I have more rtv with me.

I should be good to go, I bought some header wrap to wrap around the mid pipe so I wont have anymore rattles, went out cruisin in the 10" of snow we have and she performed more then perfect, definitely pissed some neighbors off under full throttle, she definitely sounds more like a HEMI car than a Jeep!!! Tmrw before hitting the road fluids will be checked, al easily accessible suspension bolts and skids will be checked as well as those problematic transmission lines which miraculously have stopped sweating fluid.. Should be an easy trip down 81 about 2.5hrs, lets see wht mpgs I can bring tmrw, hoping for 16, last trip to Rochester was 15.8...
