View Full Version : QD II conversion up front

I just ordered a QD II front axle out of an 07 WK Hemi which ill be installing in my XK. Since my Jeep is QT II I'll basically be swapping in the QD II front differential and wiring it up so I can manually engage the front differential to serve as a locker. Once it arrives, I'll install a new solenoid, replace the axle seals and any bushings if need be. Then after install it will get topped of with Mobile 1 gear oil and LS additive. Matt confirmed that my front drive shaft will bolt right up to the QD II differential. I'm going to order two new cv axles as the drivers side is shorter with the ELSD axle and my passenger side cv boot is torn. I'm hoping to get it installed by this weekend and the will mess with the wiring from there

Please take tons of pics when the diff is out! I would love to see what space is available there for a SFA conversion...

Oh and awesome score!

It seems the axle doesn't come with axles..... is it just the QDII front differential that you ordered?

07JeepXK
03-12-2013, 11:15 AM
The front differential didnt come with cv axles. I will be buying new cv axles though. The drivers side is shorter on the ELSD so I definitely need that one. But my passenger side cv boot is ripped so ill just buy both.

It just arrived about 20 min ago!!!

I ended up getting everything I needed tonight and installed the front QD II differential. Start to finish it took 2 1/2 hours to install it. Brand new drivers and passenger side cv axles, new solenoid (actuator) in the differential, and new seals. I'll post pictures tomorrow. Oh and I changed my oil in that 2 1/2 hours also

Need some help guys. Where can I get a 12 volt regular from? I was to ensure no more that 12 volts gets to the actuator when the front diff is engaged

Hmmm I'm not to educated on the whole regulator but was told it would be a good idea to have one.

New solenoid (actuator) installed.

Did you replace the harness that goes from the solenoid out of the diff case? I think that has given some of us the C1417 code (it probably did in my case) with the ""Service 4WD" message in EVIC. You'll just want to make sure some dinky thing like this is taken care of before you find out you need to troubleshoot electronics.

Good luck!
.

Matt
03-13-2013, 06:54 AM
Whats the resistance across the solenoid?

Since you want to regulate 14v (charging voltage) down to 12v it may be easier to just put a resistor in the circuit to achieve a 2v drop.

Matt
03-13-2013, 07:04 AM
Mark he wont get any codes because its a stand alone system that he'll be controlling with a switch, not tapping into the FCM

No I didn't. I really didnt think about it at the time and didnt know there was an issue with that harness. And like Matt said I won't get codes like you guys do. My computer has no clue I swapped front differentials

We were just talking about this at the shop. Not a clue what the resistance is across the solenoid

You can measure it with an digital multimeter. When you get that measurement we can calculate the resistor size needed to provide a 2v drop and sufficient amperage.

I guess I didn't express myself clearly. I didn't mean to imply Adam would get codes. I meant that I had a code that very well may have been related to the harness as much as the solenoid. The harness could fray or harden. This could end up being a gremlin for Adam's install. I realize he's wiring this independent from the XK's computer.

I'm not sure this was any clearer than before! :p

Matt
03-13-2013, 08:13 AM
Yeah I guess I wasnt following why he would have an issue with the harness because I envisioned him running his own wires to the solenoid, not using the oem harness.

07JeepXK
03-13-2013, 08:57 AM
I'm using the oem harness that's inside the diff. Everything from the outside of diff will be wired according to what you say I need. Lol

I should run an inline fuse correct? What size 30 amp???

Oh if the internal harness is what he was referring to, good point!

For fuse size I need to know what resistance you measure across the solenoid. I can probably find it in the manual tonight too....

30 amp is going to be way too much. Probably more than 10. Will find out for sure though.

I was hoping for a repeatable process..... but I guess its worth a look now and then. Definitely well worth the money as there is no other way to lock the front that i am aware of.

Well I got sone bad news. Work was slow today so we pushed the BMW in the shop and my brother pulled the transmission and cats($$$). Afterwords I ran for a part we needed for a customers car and when I got back it was gone! They had it towed to the scrap yard. I thought for sure it would sit in the parking lot for a few days and we already had the go ahead to park my jeep on the hood. :0(

Totally worth the money. Once I wire it all up ill be able to flip a switch and have the front end fully locked. My rear end has a locker installed already. Now all I need is some rubicon hood decals lol

So Adam, not to badger over this point, but did you replace the wire harness that goes through the diff case to the solenoid?

07JeepXK
03-14-2013, 08:41 AM
Nope. Not to worried about it. I'll order it once I get the wiring done and keep it as a spare if i ever need it. Later on if it gives me issues ill swap it in. Will only take about a half hour to do and I always keep gear oil and rtv in the back of the jeep.

I'll try to get some more pictures up tomorrow night. I decided against the ARB switches and went with a normal rocker switch from the local auto parts store. The wiring was easy once Matt figured everything out for me. I tapped right into the cigarette lighter that only has power when the key is on. Next on the list is rebuilding my transfer case

My dad and brothers are mechanics and I'm currently working at a transmission shop until I start the Sheriff Academy April 1st. I couldn't have done this without cmdr Jim who did all the leg work on the ELSD operation, Matt who educated me with the electrical portion of the install and of course andrew who found the front diff on ebay!! This is how I ran the wires from the ABS Pump fuse. I used a test light to see which wire from the fize box had constant power and which wire didnt have power. Once I ran the wires into the jeep, I used the original 30amp pink fuse from the fuse box and had the wire with power come in one side of the fuse and then out the other side and then to the switch. This way if there is any issues it would blow the fuse first just like it would in the fuze box.

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2013/04/ABSPumpSwitch1_zps9d0713c1-1.jpg

This picture shows the power supply/ground wiring coming from the front diff (left side of pic), the gound wire splitting off and bolted on the inside of the fender by the battery (bottom of pic) and also the wiring where the power supply wire for the front locker and ABS pump wires from the fuze box come together (right side of pic) All the wiring has wire loom around it for protection and the wire loom was taped all the way from the plug on the front diff all the way up to the fuze box and then into the jeep with electrical tape.

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2013/04/ABSPumpSwitch3_zps79edfd07-1.jpg

This picture shows where the wire harness for the front locker power source and the abs pump wires to disable the traction control lead into the jeep.

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2013/04/ABSPumpSwitch2_zps828da7d7-1.jpg

Here are the pictures showing where I mounted the ABS pump fuse switch (the switch used to completly disable the traction control) and the front locker switch. It was hard finding somewhere that I could mount them and still have enough room to wire up the switches from the back side. The left switch is for the ABS Pump fuze (traction control) which is switched on. I will only flip it off when off roading. I didnt wire it up so the red light would turn on because it would be very annoying having it on all of the time. The switch on the right is for the front locker. Its currently in the off position. Once turned on the red light will be on showing the front locker is actuated.

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2013/04/switches1_zpsbfe3ba33-1.jpg

Here is a picture from eye level showing that the switches are kind of hidden and out of sight. They are in a good spot so I'll never have to worry about accidently flipping the switch.

I think im going to try making a circuit to turn off my front locker when in 4low. Id like to use 4low on some of the rocky trails at Rausch but dont like the front end binding. So if I can disable it by using a resistor to trick the computer to think its still there I wouldn't get any dtc's
