View Full Version : EVAP Leak Haunting....

So as many of you are aware, I have been having a "Check Gas Cap" warning w/ Check Engine Light coming on over the past 3 weeks now. First stop was a buddy who smoked it and seen it was leaking from the gas cap? We replaced the gas cap but it came back on. I then took it to the dealer and 3 hours later they found a small leak coming from the EVAP canister? And quoted me $310.35 to replace w/ parts & labor.

I decided not to pay the cost right then and there and take took the XK home. Any thoughts? Suggestions? Can I get this fixed for cheaper?

Is the canister metal or plastic? JB Weld covers a MULTITUDE of sins... gas tank weld oughta do the trick.

Core XK

That I am not sure of. I have the 5.7L so im not sure if anyones knows if its plastic or metal?

Are they referring to the charcoal canister? If so I replaced mine after sinking the jeep in a creek. Cost about $100 from the dealer and took 10 min to replace.

It's plastic if it's the charcoal canister

Core XK

I am not sure. The dealer write up says replacement of EVAP canister. $310 for parts & labor. Any idea if I can buy the part elsewhere and put it on? Not trying to spend $300...

Do a google search real quick, I just did and a bunch showed up.. Its the canister behind the drivers rear tire

Yeah I am going to look around. I have my buddy who has a shop looking for me as well. My inspection is due by the end of April which it wont pass with this.....sucks. Definitely dont want to pay $310 lol no sliders if thats the case.

Like I said I paid around $100 for that part from the dealer and installed it myself in a few minutes. I'm sure you can even find it cheaper than $100 and do the install in your driveway. It's easy

Okay. I just hope it was actually the EVAP canister.....I have a gut feeling its something else even know the dealer said it was.....but it is the dealer so who knows.

I am getting it smoked again Monday. I will write down the code to check. I wouldn't be as pissed if my inspection wasn't up.....with my luck I will be pulled over :(

Still no solution on this leak. A buddy thinks it may be the metal "Neck" that the gas cap connects to. I think I had a non factory gas cap on there which had a lock. We believe this may have expanded the metal and is causing the leak because when smoking it, it continues to come from there after (2) gas cap replacements. However, I am going to get it smoked once more prior to throwing any more parts at it.

Also, my brake light and fog light just went out. Now I am just laughing at all of this little irritating crap going wrong lol....

Pretty sure the filler neck can be replaced pretty easily too.

Did you actually clear the codes and they came back, or did they just never turn off like you expected?

Core XK

Codes were cleared with a scanner multiple times to turn the check engine off but the check gascap doesnt go off which in turn brings the check engine back on

Check the filler neck to tank connection. We did have your tank down.... maybe we didnt snug the clamp up enough and the friction isnt sealing it good enough anymore

Core XK
05-31-2014, 10:29 AM

Take the hose clamp off, move around the filler neck hose and make sure it's on good then tighten the hose clamp back up. It will literally take a minute to do. Crawl under the jeep from where the stock spare would be and you can get to it from there

Nah it's no problem man. Maybe we can pick a weekend to do other maintenance (Spark Plugs, Fluids etc.) and maybe we can figure out the leak lol I am essentially out of options. I don't want to bring it to another dealer because I will pay out of my ass for no fix.

I may be totally off with this, but isn't the funny "box" tucked up under the driver's side bumper part of the evap system? Could the problem be there?

Matt
06-09-2014, 08:35 AM
Corey, yeah we'll take a look and do some other work too.

Mark, yes that is part of the evap system. He already tried changing it.

Core XK

So just an update on this EVAP. I left the XK with my brother-in-law while we were away on our Honeymoon. He replaced the EVAP canister sensor. So far the Check Gas Cap has stayed off after. However, the check engine came back on for the 02 sensor? Lol just my damn luck. Do you think the two issues are related? I called Chrsysler and the 02 sensor (If thats the only issue) is covered under my 8 year / 100,000 warranty.

We shall see. I will be looking for a new Jeep dealer to have this serviced though.

So the EVAP leak seems to be completely gone. Now its just the Check Engine for thr 02 sensor. The dealer has ordered the part and will replace it for free. Chrysler did me a favor and called the dealer asking them to cover me even with an expired warranty.

My question is....I cant get in the dealer until next Wed. How long can I run on a bad 02 sensor?

Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2

Matt
07-08-2014, 05:41 PM
If it's a downstream o2 sensor its nothing to worry about. If it's upstream then it can affect your A/F ratio and cause the engine to run rich/lean which can cause other problems.

Whats the exact code?

Core XK
07-09-2014, 04:20 AM
Not sure on exact code. However, the Check Gascap just came back on this morning after being off for a week.

What all was replaced again?

Gas cap with a dealer cap that is for my Jeep and year. EVAP canister and EVAP canister sensor. It has been smoked 3 times with all different individuals stating there is no smoke coming out of any part of the Jeep.

It is going in the dealer Tuesday to replace a bad 02 sensor. I am having the guy smoke it and take a look one more time. I will be honest, I am getting really frustrated at this point simply because my inspection is going on 3 months past due, and it is holding up other purchases I would like to make for the XK. I don't want to spend another dime until I know how serious the problem can/will be. I understand how difficult EVAP can be but this is just ridiculous.

Unfortunately I do not have any exact codes but I can try to get them from the dealer Tuesday.

Lol its my mechanics $10k scanner for emissions test. I was driving around with it yesterday hoping it would run the tests I needed to pass. According to Chrysler when you have a check engine cleared it can take100-500 miles for the system to reset and run tests. So far no more check engine or check gas cap so its a waiting game to pass emissions *fingers crossed*
