View Full Version : New antenna mount - bolted under hood

Spent all do working on little projects around the house that i've been putting off for a while.... feeling ambitious (and waiting for some glue to dry for another project) I decided to start making my own antenna mount.

Looks a little rough right now. Tomorrow I'll finish it up. Needs some angles tweaked, round off the end and drill the hole, a few surface prep disks + paint, and a rubber liner on the bottom so it doesn't vibrate on the fender and wear the paint.

Once installed it'll use the existing fender bolt and a self tapper for good measure.

Sounds like "The Zombie Jeep" from Bleepin Jeep (built by another Matt).

Matt, you going to throw some marking grease on their to see if it's rubbing the hood? I started one because I didn't feel like stick welding. I was trying to go off memory because my XK is still at the dealer and wasn't smart enough to pull up some pics LOL. I used some pretty thick metal not sure it will clear the gaps.

Mine definitely clears the hood, i purposely have it touching the fender and used some fiber reinforced silicone rubber for the interface.

Although thicker than the steel i'd use if I was making this, Aluminum is nowhere near as stiff. So one thing I decided to add was another self tapper and "clamp" down on the mount which then makes it a nice firm interface at the fender. Also added some silicone just for good measure

Very nice! That was my original vision. The piece I have is a thicker stainless steel that I couldn't bend without a press, and fire from propane probably wouldn't do the job.

Now get into mass production!!!

That looks good man! I'm using steel so their is no give to it so if it clears it shouldn't rub. I see their are more bends I need to make now. I made the first bend in the press brake but couldn't fit back in to make the second bend so I had to heat it up. When I get my Jeep back I'll try finish it up.

I wonder if you could put a washer under the part that gets bolted to the fender and keep that part straight, so no extra bends.

What happened to your drivers side door?

You can. I like the extra surface area contact to keep it more rigid

I forgot the first one at home so I made another one LOL I just used Matt's pictures to do it so I don't know if it will fit or not. I was bored and still don't feel like stick welding so I just goofed around with this in class today. I managed to twist it :( My instructor said he meant to tell me it was slightly crooked but got distracted. So a 5lb hammer and a anvil straightened it out a little bit.

My comet setup - clinging to the edge of the hood - works fine for my little scanner antenna. I like the rigidity of your setup for a serious CB antenna. I'll be curious to see how it holds up against brush and tree branches though!

I use a QD mount on my CB, so I can more easily pop it off, since most of my travels are around town and I don't use the CB then. Going to Buffalo this weekend though, so I'll be fully deployed. Thing is, most Pittsburgh parking garages discriminate against CB-Americans - my barrel mount still smacks cross-beams in most of them.

Cannot see photos from my work computer, I have to go home to see this item. I need a day off!

Yeah i'm not worried about tree branches with this one. I can bend the antenna back to my roof and it doesn't flinch...... any tree branch that'll damage this mount means my Jeep won't clear :p
