It's weird because the pictures always make it look like there is more space between the lugs then there really is.

I've decided to buy a new 4 door JK next summer. My commander is getting close to 145,000 miles and I'd like to get into a newer vehicle. I will be keeping the Commander because I have a decent amount of money into it and don't want to get rid of it. Especially due to the high mileage, I won't get much for it for it as a trade in and it would just go to auction anyways. As for the JK, I plan on doing something ridiculous. I'm going to save for the first couple years of owning it and buy dynatrac portal axles. It's about a $20,000 plus investment but the Jeep is going to be sick. As for the wrangler itself, I'll get a base model 6 speed to keep the cost down. With the portal axles I really won't need a lift but if I were to lift it, i wouldn't go anything bigger than an OME with long travel shocks. There would be no need for any lift bigger than that because I can run 37's just with the portal axles all day long. Can't wait!

If you're going to spend that kind of money why not SFA the XK?

X2!!

Doesn't quadratech sell portal kits for ~$7k for some axle combo's? You can SFA and portal the xk for under 20k.... then still get a 2nd vehicle if you want.... but have one of the most badass jeeps ever :)

Wow! So what would your daily driver be?

That a good question. Haven't figured that out yet. Just with portal axles alone with no lift I can run 38's on the JK with no rubbing. And due to the very low gearing I'd have to run around that tire size if I ever planned on driving it on the highway. Right now the lowest gear ratio they have for the axles themselves is 4.10's. However they will have 3.73's here soon which will allow for lower rpm's for higher speeds.

If you're going to spend that kind of money why not SFA the XK?

I really didn't want to sink a bunch of money into the XK due to the higher mileage. By next summer I'll be somewhere around 165,000 plus miles.

That would be sick but not sure how long the 4.7 is going to last in the XK. I can already use a new transfer case or a rebuild and I'm sure the transmission will be getting to that point by the time I get the money to do what I have planned. This isn't something that would happen overnight due to the cost. I was planning on getting the JK and having it paid off within the first 2-3 years then go from there.

I'd have to look into it and see if they make a portal kit that a direct bolt on to our rear axles to even consider doing it to the XK

Over the past few days, I have been lookin into what portal axles are and all I can do is drool. I was originally unaware something like this even existed and the more I see the more I want haha.

What would be yall's thoughts on trying an ifs portal setup, like military Hummers, on an XK?

Would it be easier than a SAS or solid portal swap, due to the fact you don't have to worry about uptravel issues with the diff, and creating a whole 4-link system?

From what I gather, it would require either a custom setup (UCA's, LCA's, tie rods) to mount to the hummer knuckles, or would need a way to connect a portal box to the existing XK knuckles.

Here's a pic of the different hummer ifs portals and a hilux with ifs portals:

This is what I found when drained my rear diff yesterday. Guess I probably should have swapped the fluids after last off road trip lol.

In the next few weeks I'll be doing another rear diff fluid swap to ensure I got all the water out, relocating the breather tube up into the passenger side rear inner fender well above the fender well liner. Once the bushings get her from Kyle I'll be installing the Superlift shocks. After that better brake pads and rotors for the rear so I can finally stop these 34" MT/R's I just installed.

Here is a few more pics of the 34's from my "Go big or go home" thread. Prior to the 34's I cut an inch off all the way around on the front fender flares and swapped out my rear OME springs for Superlift 4 inch lift springs.

Yes for the next few days. I have Superlift shocks waiting to go on. I got the rear 4 inch springs and shocks from Kyle and he accidently sent the wrong bushings for the shocks. Once they arrive they will get installed. He put JBA 6 inch coils and has fox shocks in the rear so he didn't need the Superlift springs or shocks.

Today I extended te breather tube for the rear differential above the passenger side inner fender well liner. It's now sitting almost 45 inches from the ground. Also I drained and filled the rear differential again to ensure I got all the water. Of course the gf texts me saying that the bushings for the Superlift shocks arrived at the house but I'm 30 min away at my brothers.

07JeepXK
11-24-2013, 12:25 PM
Superlift shocks are on. Figured it would take like 20 min but had trouble getting the shocks in the lower mounts. Turns out one of my OME shocks was blown so I'm happy to have new shocks on that are the proper length.

Ross

What did you use to extend the breather tubes? Also, when doing deep water crossings, is there any other precautions you take for the rest of the drive-train, electronics, etc.? Since I got my snorkel I have been taking the XK in deeper mud holes but I'm wary of how deep is too deep.

I only extended the rear breather as the front breather goes all the way up to the nut that bolts the strut in. All I did was take off the rear breather hose and took it to a local auto parts store and go the same size hose about 3 1/2 feet long. I ran the hose into the passenger side inner fender well above the wheel well liner at the highest point. To do this I had to remove the plastic liner. I used a bracket and two self taping screws to hold it in place at the end of the hose where the breather valve is. Once you put the plastic liner back in it hold the rest of the hose in place. Cost about $6 and now the breather is about 45 inches off the ground. Keep in mind I'm running 4 inch Superlift rear springs and 34 inch tires so the height where it's located will be higher than if you located it in the same spot.

As far as how deep of water you can go in all depends. Again I'm sitting higher than someone with a 2 inch lift and 265's.

Lookin' good, thanks for the how-to on the breather lines, I'll definitely be doin this mod soon. Whats your overall height in the front and rear after the tires and spring change? I have been pondering running this setup in the rear, as I'm already at 38" up front with worn down 265's, making the rear quite un-level.

07JeepXK
11-25-2013, 12:09 PM
It's hard to say on the front because I cut about an inch all the way around on the fender flares but if I measure the front to where I cut I'm at 39". In the rear I'm right at 40". In the spring I'm going to do something similar to what Matt is doing with the adjustable bilstein struts and OME MD springs. Waiting to see how much height he gets out of his setup. I'd like the front up about another 1/2-3/4 inch more.

07JeepXK
11-25-2013, 12:18 PM
Btw if I didn't cut an inch off the front flare prior to installing the rear Superlift springs my jeep would probably look ridiculous with the rear a lot higher than the front. But due to me trimming the flare it makes it not look as bad. Keep in mind all I have up front is the OME struts and HD coils. I love how it looks right now but once I redo the front suspension it will look good with the front a little higher.

Yeah. I just want that little extra gear for the hills. I know going from 3.73's to 4.10's won't be that much of a difference but for $750 I think it will be worth it. If I had to pay for install I wouldn't even bother

I have a 4.7 liter Sport. It has no options other than heated mirrors and back up sensors which probably all commanders come with. So basically it's got cloth seats, single disc CD player no sun roof....etc

There is no way I could get anywhere near 12k for it

Edit:

KBB says $7,643 for private party in good condition.

H53Ecrewchief
03-06-2014, 09:38 PM
No, maybe not 12, but 3 just seems like a crazy low offer if it was serious. 7600 seems way more reasonable. 12 was the window sticker price on the wk, the sign hanging from the mirror was 9K.

I've never broke a CV shaft on the XK. What I was trying to say was I really don't want to put that kind of money into the Jeep at the moment. I want to start saving money for mods for the next Commander I buy. It will be getting 5-6 inches of lift with 35's.

I haven't updated this in a while. A few weeks ago I installed a new steel rear drive shaft with rebuildable u-joints. Due to the mileage of the XK and angle from the lift the stock shaft was making noises and I was getting driveline vibrations. Just recently I also fabbed up a 3/8 inch transfer case drop (3/8 spacer between the transmission crossmember and frame) to help the rear pinion angle and angle of the shafts from the transfer case. I should have gone a little thicker, possibly 3/4 inch but not a big deal. The mod cost me about $20, helped the angles a little and also got rid of the driveline vibes I was having. I just recently hit 171,00 miles and will be replacing the transfer case soon along with a new Mopar transfer case shift motor.
