I purchased my Commander in August 2007 with only 8 miles on the odometer. It now has over 60,000 miles with quite a few mods done to it.

This picture was taken a few weeks after purchase while it was still bone stock.

you've done some great research with the upgrades... quick discos are one of the first things i always recommend, and i haven't heard one bad thing about the new MT/R-K's and i know guys running all sizes from 235/75/15's up to 40" x 17" on full beadlocks

I absolutely love my MT/R's. I just wish I took care of them a little better. For I while I drove with the alignment off after adding the 1/4 inch leveling spacers and they started to cup on the outside edges. That and a few times I went many miles without rotating them. Towards the end of summer I plan on buying another set but might get the 275/70's this time in Load Range E.

i see a lot of the jeeps that have a mismatched spare on the back, or a brand new spare on the back that has never touched the pavement. i always recommend getting it in the mix as it will extend tire life by 20% if you have the room to carry it. when i had alignment problems i immediately switched my front tires to the back. after each trip out i assess the tire wear/damage from the rocks and pull the worst tire off and swap in the spare. i don't have much luck with sidewalls so the MTR-K's are what i really want to put on mine, but having a spool in the rear i wear tires quickly & it's hard to justify $1200 for tires once a year.

My MT/R's have approx 27,000 miles on them with about 35-40% tread left. I think they wore well for being a mud tire.

New Old Man Emu HD Coils, front struts and rear shocks have been installed on the XK. It drives so much better now. OME HD rear coils and JBA UCA's will be the next thing purchased for the XK!

I had to replace the driver's side front wheel bearing/hub the other day. It was howling pretty bad. Unfortunately when I was taking off the 36mm nut that holds the cv axle to the hub the threads on the cv got all messed up. I thought I would still be able to get the nut back on once I replaced the wheel bearing/hub but it didnt work out as planned. I had to install a new cv axle too. I'll be gone the next few months but once I get home the entire front end is getting rebuilt. New JBA UCA's and OEM LCA's since the ball joint and bushings are going bad. I'll probablly do outter tie rods while im at it and get rid of that garbage cv axle I just installed and go with an OEM cv. Unfortunately the dealer didnt have one in stock the other day when the threads stripped so I had to go with a rebuilt cheap one from the local parts store. The boots are paper thin compared to the oem shaft.

Sal-XK
07-25-2011, 06:19 PM
How much of a pain was it to replace the CV axle? The boot is paper thin but do you think the new half shaft is not up to par for the abuse that it will see?

The CV axle was very easy to replace. I already had the brakes off along with the wheel bearing/hub so all I had to do was disconnect the sway bar end link from the lower control arm and disconnect the upper ball joint to allow the steering knuckle to swing forward. After that I just had to pop the cv axle out of the differential. Nothing to it at all. The new cv boots are very thin compared to stock. Definately not heavy duty at all. Even the metal bands that hold the boot on are no where near as HD as on the OEM cv's. Im not sure if it will take the abuse that it will see on my lifted XK. But it has a 3 year warranty so im not really worried about it.

I got mine from the local Napa. It was the only cv shaft in the area. I would have had to wait several days to get one from the dealer or anywhere else. It was only $59 + tax. Not bad but no where near as strong as the oem shaft. I had no problem getting the shaft out of the differential. It was actually a little harder to get the new one in all the way.

07JeepXK

They are very easy to replace though and with a 3 year warranty I guess you cant go wrong. If the boot rips or I break the cv it will be replaced for free.

Ya I guess with that warranty it doesn't sound to bad but you will have to supply all the labor as well. The plus is if they are really weak you will get wicked fast at changing half shafts LOL. I've never had to do one myself so in a weird way I'm looking forward to one of mine breaking LOL. Did you need a new alignment after the change or no?

pjmjr508
07-26-2011, 05:32 PM
I got mine from napa as well, and paid I think 44 for it. Going back in was the easy part. lol Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't yours a QTII drivetrain? I don't know if it makes a difference because I have the QDII and the OEM was quoted from the stealership @ close to 250 for the half shaft. Also the replacement seemed quite stout. But we will see when I go back to TSF in Sept to do the same trail again to get my revenge. Thanks for the info again.

My last question is (for now) how do you like the JKS Swaybar disco's for the rear? also do you have the part # for them?

The only thing that'll make it a PITA is if you're one of those guys who can't get bolt out of the strut fork. Since the fork spans the CV it needs to be taken out to get the CV out.

And alignment isnt required after doing it... but couldn't hurt to have it checked after having the entire front end torn down.

Labor is free! Haha Its nothing but time to me and I love working on my Jeep. As for the alignment. I didnt get one done after the install. The CV shaft doesnt change anything with the alignment. The wheel bearing/hub would have more effect on the alignment but it drives the same now as it did before the install. Just not howling from the drivers side front anymore!

Those strut fork bolts are a PITA. I'd recommend for everyone out there to apply never seize on that bolt everyonce and a while. My buddy had to torch off the lower control arm when we installed his 4 inch lift because the fork bolt pretty much welded itself to the inside of the LCA bushing. LCA's arent cheap either. He ended up getting one used from a junkyard for around $200.

Last month I did a lot of work to the XK. I installed a new MOOG inner tie rod and dealer outter tie rod on the drivers side. I also took out my BDS rear spacers and replaced them with OME HD coils along with new upper and lower coil isolators. I also installed a Rusty's adjustable rear track bar, new Timken rear wheel bearings/hubs on both sides with new axle seals and finished it off with some fresh differential fluid.

I scored an amazing deal on an Air Flow snorkel though the distributor here in the U.S. for $100 shipped to my door. It was missing a few major parts (to include the template for drilling the fender). Total instal time was approx 16 hrs due to all the missing pieces and fabrication to the XK that needed to be done.

Hey did you adjust your own rear axle? Just curious how hard was it to get it centered.

Yes I adjusted it myself. What I did was adjusted the new track back to the same length as the oem track bar. Then made a couple extra turns to make it a little longer. I installed it and the axle was still a little off to the drivers side. Probablly due to me just installing the OME HD Coils and getting more lift out of it. This past weekend after I relocated my antenna I crawled under the XK and re adjusted it to make it a little longer and now my axle is very close to being centered now. Its not hard to do, however I couldnt figure out a way to measure to get it exact. Close enough is a lot better then the axle way off to the drivers side. Once I fix the front end and take it in for an alignment ill see if they are able to get it dead on.

I think you had me confused the other day. It sounds like you cut the pinch welds clean with the existing metal, threw some tack welds on it to strengthen it up and then grinded it smooth. Is that correct? Im actually cutting the entire pinch weld area out of the XK and relocating it back about 2 inches farther then what yours currently looks like. I thought thats what you did at first. I'll be going to lowes or home depot for some sheet metal tonight.

Ya that's exactly what I did and only did it to about the lower 8" as well were the tire contacts. Your plan has my attention I never thought to do that take pics. I'd need a new welder to do that as well the one I borrowed only has two power setting min and max so it's kinda limited that's why I did tack welds instead of running a bead.

I've posted this picture before of my friends 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.7 L with the 4 inch BDS lift that the pinch weld mod was done on. He's the same one running the 3.73's now. Once he got to where you are with your pinch welds, he completely cut out the entire pinch weld area and relocated it back about another 2 inch and welded in sheet metal.

Wheels dont clear the front brake caliper bracket. 1/4 hub/wheel centric wheel spacers are being made as we speak and over nighted to my house. I'll update more on this tomorrow once the tires get in and are mounted on the wheels. It doesnt look like the wheel/tire will sit out as far as I figured. Guess I'll find out.

The 1/4 wheel spacers turned out perfect. They really lock that wheel in tight to the hub. The front is done for the moment until Jay finds some time to weld in new steel in the pinch weld area I cut out. I didnt do as planned with the fender flares by cutting an inch all the way around because it was needed to clear the tires. If it rubs when off road ill do it then. As far as the rear, I have 1 inch bump stop spacers I still need to install and I might do a little work to the rear flare. Im going to wait and see what Sal has up his sleeve for that. Not rubbing at all during normal street driving. The new wheels dont have tpms sensors so using my Flashpaq I enabled the off road setting so the light isnt on the dash. Changed the tire size also with the flashpaq and its dead on. These new tires measure 32.75 inches tall at 40 psi. From the ground to the fender flare im at 37 3/4 inches all the way around. I was dead on at 36 inches prior to the tires.

I did trim the front flares a little. Just not what I originally planned because I wanted to be able to throw the plastic inner fender wells back in until jay can weld in some steel. The pinch weld area was totally chopped right out. With the flares off I could easily clear 35s. I'm still thinking about the rear. I'll let you know what I come up with. I have an idea but need to make sure a friend is free to use his plasma cutter :)

Thanks...I noticed a slight difference with the heavier bigger tires but the 4.7 has no problem pushing them. I also noticed a little difference in braking. Its a little harder to slow the XK down. No big deal.

I'm still thinking about the rear. I'll let you know what I come up with. I have an idea but need to make sure a friend is free to use his plasma cutter :)

Ya I seen what I could cut out but not how to make the end result look right yet. The rear door design if done wrong could let water come in and I didn't like that LOL

You could definitely run some bigger tires with little modification. You have tube fenders up front. Make us some for the rear and I'm sure you would have at least two sets sold. One to me and on to Sal

I thought the metal wheel well was too small, is it just the plastic getting in the way?

Are you talking about up front or in the rear. If your talking about the rear, the tire will hit the plastic fender flare.

Yes I was talking about the back. I have never taken my flair off so I will have to play with it to see if a tube fender can work there.

Rear end tore apart once agin to install 2 inch bump stop spacers.

Testing the following day. Im happy so far. The tire just touches the rear portion of the flare and its at full stuff (bump stop wont allow it to tuck in anymore).

Yeah I can't wait to get this spacer on today. My XK sits a hair lower in the rear and wasn't happy with it. The rear locker was supposed to get ordered this weekend but I was reminded by the X last night that we were going school shopping for my son tomorrow. My American Rebel 10 bolt rear differential cover should be shipping today. Made a few phone calls to order the powertrax no-slip rear locker and they are back ordered right from the manufacturer. 07JeepXK

Yeah it was about $150 cheaper then the powertrax no-slip. But I don't think it will be as transparent as the no-slip. So I might hear it making a little noise every once and a while. But in the end both wheels will be locked and it's been installed in a WK so I know for sure it will work.

Yeah. For her to use it as a daily driver I won't have to sink as much money into it compared to what it would need if I keep it and contine to wheel it. I have the rear main seal already and it could use a new steering rack. As far as the tires I'd probably get her some 265/70s so it's not as bad on gas. Again I'm not really sure what my plans are yet.

If I'm at a rolling turn its quiet. It's when I'm at a stop light or stop sign and turn left or right. It's crazy loud. Don't like it at all. Nothing like the powertrax no slip I had in the rear of my ford ranger. I never heard one noise come from that. I'm so pissed that they aren't available and on back order. Still not sure. Its a tough decision because the Jeep needs work done to it. So either way I would probably have to foot the bill to fix it so if I were to do that I might as well just keep it. The locker works great. Just dont like the noise it makes. Im so pissed though. Made a few phone calls today and supposedly Richmond gear has 5 no-slips in stock. I was told last week from a different distributor that they didnt have any in stock and would take 6 months to get one.

Being locked is nice. If you ever plan on doing so do it soon. There are only 5 powertrax no-slips available in the US as of now and will be another 9 months or longer until another shipment makes it here. No. Already bought two new bottles for the swap. I figure I'm already out the cost of the Aussie locker so why not spend another $40 on new fluid. Lol Plus with the old diff cover not having a drain plug it would be hard to catch all of the old fluid and don't have a clean oil pan.

I'm hoping to. Not sure if they will take it back yet. Might have to sell it on Craigslist. It works great just to loud for a daily driver. Unless you don't mind hearing the noise when it ratchets when making turns from a stop.

Sounds like a plan. I'm supposed to be calling Aussie back tomorrow once it's out but if I can help out another member on the forum I'd rather do that. Just a heads up though. It does ratchet when you make turns from a stop which is sort of loud. Its doing exactly what it was designed to do I just figured it would have been quieter like the no-slip I had in my Ford Ranger. With the windows up and radio on its a lot less noticable.

Basically my rear end is totally locked all all times. The only time it unlocks is when you are at a stop and make a right or left turn. The locker disengages due to the tires rotating at different speeds while making the turn. Once through the turn and the vehicle is going straight again it goes back to full lock. Also anytime your hard on the skinny pedal it stays locked

Technically it's locked anytime you're hitting the gas, even around turns. The noslip has a better tooth design that allows it to ratchet a bit more seamlessely so its not as noticeable as the lock right when it "releases" to allow the tires to spin at different rates.

Well yea. When driving on a straight road and on the gas the rear end will stay locked. If there is a curve in the road and still on the gas then it wont unlock. When you come to a stop sign or stop light and make a left or right turn, the two rear tires will start to travel at different speeds around the turn and thats when it unlocks. But the no slip doesn't ratchet like you mentioned. Which ever wheel is on the inside will get the power and the out will unlocks. It doesn't actually ratchet like the Aussie. It opens that side of the locker and spins freely until you start going straight again (both rear tires turning at the same speed) and then re locks that side. The Aussie actually ratchets meaning the teeth on the locker open and close repeatedly around the turn when one rear wheels is moving faster than the other. When I did the spin test with both lockers installed and the rear diff cover off you can totally see how both lockers work and that the no slip is far more superior.

You have to call American Rebel directly to place the order. They didn't have it listed on their website when I purchased it because its a new product that they just finished making. Unless they updated their website since I ordered mine. Just search Anerican Rebel Diff covers on google for the website.

When You call them just let them know you have a Chrysler 8.25 10 bolt. You have to tell them you want the jeep logo on the cover along with the black coating

Ugh, mine has the exhaust leak that seems to plauge the XK/WK guys at the manifold. Mine Seems its on the drivers side, but I have no clue how to get to the bolts etc. Did you pull the whole motor out?

Im a little scared to have it fixed because of the price it may be. Never tackled anything that big on my own.

07JeepXK
10-31-2012, 08:41 AM
It not "hard" to do just takes a few hours. The motor doesn't need to come out. I moved a few things like the battery tray, battery and fuse box to make it easier to get my arms in there. I also took out the inner plastic fender well liner. This helps you gain access to the rear manifold bolts and down pipe bolts. The dealer recommended me to replace the manifold too since they are know to warp. Maybe someone with a service manual can send you the pages on replacing the manifold to help you out.

I didnt take any pictures and used the install instructions that came in the box. All you do is pop out the passenger side rear core plug, clean the edges around the machined part of the hole and then insert the heater and tighten the center screw that holds it in place. After that, i ran the wiring harness towards the front of the jeep and secured it down by the passenger side tow hook for easy access. It's a very easy install. Just make sure you have extra coolant on hand

My jeep doesn't have a remote start. But there is a big difference between an engine block heater and a remote start. All a remote start does is keep you inside your warm house and allow you to start you vehicle without going out in the cold. It still takes the normal amount of time for your engine to heat up and blow hot air out of the vents.

An engine block heater installs in the side of the motor and heats up the coolant in the engine so right away when you start the vehicle the heater blows hot air. It's a nice addition if you like up north like me.

When I did the spin test with both lockers installed and the rear diff cover off you can totally see how both lockers work and that the no slip is far more superior.

My understanding of the no-slip is that it allows a wheel to freely spin faster than dictated by the driveshaft but not slower. This is different than a locker where both wheels move in lock step with the drive shaft and an open diff or limited slip where the load is balanced across the wheels and one may spin faster while the other spins slower than the driveshaft. This agrees with your statement that the no-slip drives the inner wheel around corners.

Have you experienced any adverse affects to date from the no-slip combined with the xk traction control...... e.i., what happens when the xk brakes one wheel on the axle, how does the no-slip react? Does this have any ill effects at the other end of the axle??????

07JeepXK
11-13-2012, 04:15 PM
I'm not sure if it allows a given tire to spin faster then the drive shaft? I didn't even know that is possible?!?

No adverse effects with the no-slip since it has been installed. It is literally transparent for daily driving. No traction control issue either. When off road, the traction control shouldnt brake one of the rear tires because there is never a time that one rear tire is moving faster then the other because the no-slip is at a full lock. Especially in 4 low with your foot on the gas. I've notice since the no slip has been installed the traction control really doesn't kick in at all due to the crazy amount of traction I'm now getting with the locker and aggressive mud tires

I'm not sure if it allows a given tire to spin faster then the drive shaft? I didn't even know that is possible?!?

If you go around a corner with an open diff the outer wheel spins faster than the inner wheel as it has farther to go and the same amount of time to get there. When you do the same with a locker you get skipping and popping as one wheel has farther to go than the other but they are both forced to rotate in lock step.

In an open diff when a tire slips (ice under one tire for example) all power goes to the slipping tire and the other one just sits still. With a locker they both spin together and the one with traction keeps the vehicle moving forward.

A no slip attempts (and does a great job from what I hear) of giving the best of both worlds.... allowing one tire to spin faster than the other when cornering while not allowing all power to go to the faster moving (slipping wheel). it must either be allowing one tire to rotate faster than what's dictated by the driveshaft or slower. If it were slower, than the outside wheel would be the driving wheel around the corner.

Thanks for the great evaluation of it's behavior in our highly computer controlled xk's.
