EC-XK Sept 2010 Trail Run @ Rausch Creek

Its been a while since I have been to Rausch Creek so I'd like to get a trail ride together for the end of September (unfortunately I have some Army Training taking place in July and August). I will be taking leave towards the end of September, so whatever weekend works best for everyone else is the weekend we will go. I plan on getting there Friday night and camping there until Sunday. If for some reason you cant make it out Friday night then just make sure you are at the park by 8 am Saturday morning for registration.

Depending on how many people show up, we might break up into two groups like we have done in the past. This way if some guys want to run the harder trails they can and we will still have a group running the green trails for guys who are new to off roading or just dont have enough lift to run the harder trails.

Man dude I wish I could go but thats way to far for me with all thats going on and I promised the wife that after Flag pole Uwharrie was as far as I would go the rest of the year. I spent a ton of money this year on off road trips.

Not a problem. Off roading tends to be a little expensive. Its a good thing that Rausch Creek isnt to far away from where i live!

I am thinking about this one... maybe just me coming out in the XK. Problem is i have a jamboree the first weekend in October and i work saturdays now.... I will let you know but I am going to vote for the 17th weekend

Well I definately had fun, but the weekend didnt end so well. Lets just say that I need a new transfer case for my XK and had to get towed from PA home. :(

Going to pick up new transfer case now. I should have it in by early morning!

Update: Just got the transfer case and the front output seal is bad. The case needs to be opened to replace it. :(

Made some progress last night.....

Picked up the new transfer case from junkyard. It came out of an 05 HEMI Jeep Grand Cherokee that had an electrical fire.

Tore the old transfer case out of the XK

Split open the new transfer case to replace both front and rear output seals

How did your T-case break?

Well its a long story. A few weeks back I received a late phone call from my brother needing assistance pulling out his friends F250 that was stuck in a mud hole at Cat Creek. The kid was burried and I had to give him a few hard tugs to try to get him out but the F250 wouldnt move an inch. During the process I started hearing a noice from underneith the XK that I have never heard before. I wasnt sure exactly where the noise was coming from so I decided I would check it out after our trip down to Rausch Creek, PA. When we were at Rausch Creek I heard the noise again a few times on Saturday whenever one of the front tires came of the ground and lost traction. It mostly happend on hill climbs when there was a lot of torque being applied. I made it through the day and then first thing Sunday morning we ventured over to Lake Christy. To get down by the lake there are severaly really steep hills that you must decend. When we were done messing around down there a few of us started making our way to the top again and chose which hill climb we were going to attempt. I obviously chose one of the harder hill climbs and after a 08 Toyota 4runner had to be whiched up I decided to take that same route. I made it 99% of the way up without any problems what so ever. At the very top there was a large rock that I was going to try to climb over with the passenger side front tire. I had to turn the XK a little to position my tire on the rock and when doing so I got the XK a little off camber and started to lose traction. When the traction control kicked in I started hearing that noise again coming from underneith. Instead of backing down the hill I figured I needed to make it the rest of the way up or id have to be winched up from down by lake christy. As soon as I gave it a little gas to get my front tire on that rock the transfer case blew and I had to be winched up the final few feet of the hill climb.

Transfer cases tend to blow when you fill them up with Coors Light instead of Oil...:p:p:p

The jeep is ALIVE! Jay replaced the front and rear output seals and put the transfer case back together again. Of course the dealer messed up and ordered the wrong seal for the rear output shaft so we had to wait several hours for them to get it in. Once we received it, everything was back together within 3 hours and ready for a test drive. Jay stayed back to clean up his garage and of course the XK was making all kinds of weird noises that didnt sound good in both 4 high and 4 low. I drove back to pick him up so he could hear the noises and once he got in the XK it drove fine. Go figure right. I'll keep an eye on it the next couple days and will mostlikely swap the fluid out next week to get any little dirt and debris out.


Front output seal installed and reinstalled the chain and sprokets.

I had my tires aired down to 18 psi. When I was getting winched, they were dragging the front end of the XK sideways and the tire came off the bead.
