Mine came yesterday. It shipped from Salt Lake City. It was supposed to be shipped June 8th, but I got a tracking number on the 30th. Go Sportsman Guide!

I fabricated two brackets from 3" aluminum angle. (Which is about 1/4" thick) I needed my Foxwing to mount to the roof rack, as there's not enough space on the cargo bars with a roof rack in place.

Here's what I did:

The brackets:

All hardware is stainless steel.

Mounted to the roof rack:

My alley light worked out, because it just got stacked on the bracket:

Installed! I had to slide it back and forth to find the best position for the rearmost bar, so it would span over the hatch without cramming it.

Because my mounting keeps it low, (about an inch above the roof line) the front extension doesn't look too bad.

Deployed!!
https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2011/06/DSCF1180JPG-1.jpg

The rear hatch is almost all the way up. The Foxwing's 3rd bar holds it down a bit.
https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2011/06/DSCF1181JPG-1.jpg

The open side door clears okay.
https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2011/06/DSCF1183JPG-1.jpg

There's a lot of room under there, more than my commercial 10x10 Easy-Up. That 75 lb. two-people-for-30-minutes-to-set up thing won't be going on anymore camp trips!

Knappster, I looked at your photos again... I see why you went with a driver's side mounting. (e.g. an Australian right hand drive version)

Your tire carrier swings to the passenger side doesn't it? That would put the tire etc. right smack dab in the way of a passenger side mounted Foxwing. You'd have no space left under the awning. Or... you'd have to walk out into the rain and back from the hatch to side door. :)

My thought was the passenger side because should I pop it out for a roadside lunch stop or the like, it wouldn't be in the way. Pull over off a trail a bit, pop it out, and other 4x4's can still drive past.

Anyone considering a Foxwing might think about their mounting options if they have a swing away tire carrier.

By the way, I can see why they retail for $600. It ain't cheap made!

Looks good Adondo! If I see 2 of them in Colorado I may just have to buy one. I too am a SG member.

My tire carrier hinge is on the driver side but I had not considered that when I ordered the awning. It would be better if it swung the other way but it's too late now.

More pix.

A surplus army strap works better for me.

ARB makes a decent system. Did you guys look into theirs?

Seeing those made me think how cheap it was for my boat canvas. Aluminum tent poles are another $40. I bet you could put together a system for less than $200 and have it cover more or less area as needed. Just a thought.

I just looked at ARB's site. It looks like a small fraction of the area covered. That same type awning could be had by just buying a Girard or Carefree of Colorado awning from the local RV store and hanging it on the roof rack. You could even get a powered one for a push button deployment. Girard is seen on high end motorcoaches, and magically jut straight out with no visible support. They're expensive though.

The Foxwing has more area than my 10x10 commercial Ez-Up. And, you get coverage over the back end as well as side door. I measured the arm length, and it's 8 1/2' from the Jeep's corner to the awning corner, with a few inches of arm left. The flat sides are a little over 6 1/2' out from the Jeep. I'll have to do some math to see what the square footage is.

As for cost, the Foxwing's material is about as heavy as my boat's Bimini top, it ain't thin nylon tent crap. I'm still learning how to fold it up so the thing doesn't look like a python that just swallowed a rabbit when it's zipped up. That's because the stuff is probably denier 600. The rest of the hardware is heavy duty.

I might order an extension panel, having one off the back end would add to the rear covered area for a nice camp site. Or, put one at the driver's door side for extra that way. SG has them for $58 each.

I picked up two extensions kits and the sand bag kit when I placed my order.

I already have sandbags for the 10x10 Ez-Up, so that'll be handy. We used it for art shows in years past. Mom (the artist) is all done with outside shows these days, it's inside or nothing. I guess I might sell it, it is a nice setup, and not the cheap Costco one either. But, it's heavy and a bit much for camp trips. Try lifting a 75 lb. storage bag 'o stuff up onto your roof rack. It just about has to be raining cats and dogs before we decided to get the thing down and set it up. :)

With the Foxwing, setting up camp is just a matter of ''whipping it out.'' The neatest thing is the side/back coverage, you can get inside the Jeep without getting soaked. (Or sun baked)

Oh yeah, the costs of the ARB awning. The way I see it, is you'd need two $167 awnings, and then you'd still need a tarp stretched across the middle.
