And welcome to the Wild Wild West.

I've said it before and I'll say it again... if Jeep rolled the Commanders off the lots looking like this, they would have sold 10x as many! Awesome XK man... also love the color!

Hey thanks guys, I really liked the color too, don't see too many of them like that around here.

The 5% tint on the back was great for road trips with the kid, but it's tough backing out of tight places at night now.

Future mods are sliders and skid plates, to make sure I don't trash the body too fast, and a T.V./DVD for the kid. Wish list though is much longer, but since this is the old ladys Jeep it is a little more difficult to convince her.

Matt

What do you drive? My XK used to be my wifes too... and I drove the GMC Sierra. Recently traded in the Sierra to eliminate the payment so I took over the XK!! hahaha

Your sig says "OEM Skid Plates", do you already have the upgraded metal skids? If so, the 4xGuard is really the last "major" skid for the underbody and isn't very expensive :)

Holaday07 4.7
05-15-2011, 07:14 AM
I drive a Nissan Altima, there is no way I could afford my 1000 miles a week of driving for my job with the Jeep, I get about 29.4 mpg with the car compaired to 14.6 with the Jeep. All the skip plates are plastic, but at least they are there. The plan is to switch them all out to the metal ones, as time and money allow it.

Someday the Jeep will be mine, when the last payment is done, and she wants a new car. I still can't believe she let me do the mud tires.

Matt
05-15-2011, 07:21 AM
Ah, i hear that man!

The OEM skids aren't horribly priced either. I actually just priced up the complete set, came to $330 shipped (gas tank + tcase + front susp). I'm itching to do some real offroading and thinking about getting the skids, even if i just have to pay them off over 3 moths to fit my budget (it's cheaper than damaging something offroad... and my wife agrees)

Holaday07 4.7
05-15-2011, 11:09 AM
sounds like something I could Habdle. Most of the trails here are woods and mud, so I'm not horribly worried about the sliders though until Moab and Teluride. I want the heavier skid plates just because she takes the Jeep to work every day, and it sucks to be down to one car. I like yours a lot, it looks great

Matt
05-15-2011, 12:57 PM
Thanks. Part of me wishes I got some more aggressive tires at first... but my wife was DD'ing it at that time and she has a much further commute than I. I've got my eyes set on a 4 inch'er though in the future, so i'll get the more aggressive tires then :)

Quick update. Getting a set of Bilstein 5150 rear shocks from Kevin on the other forum. Really nice guy, and since my current ones are the original rear shocks with 96,000 miles on them I hope they will improve the floating feeling on the highway. Looking forward to getting them this week. Also, finished painting the underside of the Commander with Satin black, nice and slick to help clean off dirt. Hopefully will keep it from rusting in these sh*t Missouri winters too. I'll post pics after I get the shocks.

Holaday07 4.7

Got the shocks on today. I totally pussed out on the front strut spacer. I am no mechanic, and just changing out the rear shocks was something I would not normally try. Afther getting the top 4 strut bolts out, I couldnt get it to drop. Finally said f it and did the rear shocks.

Yeah I knocked them out in about an hour, really much better than I had predicted. I wish I could do the strut spacer, but I am getting a quote to see what it costs to have them installed. I just dont know what I would have to do to get them to drop, dissconect the sway bar? or do i take appart the whole damn thing?

Matt
09-01-2011, 11:41 AM
Disconnect the sway bar and loosen (or take off) axle nut. I also disconnected the upper balljoint. Things will move much more freely at that point.

superacerc
09-01-2011, 06:02 PM
^ ditto.
The sway bars are an easy bit to disconnect. You just need two wrenches, one for the inside bolt and one for the outside of the bolt. eight millimeter for the inside. dont remember the outside size. You just hold the eight mill and turn the outside bolt. If they aren't too rusty it may take ten minutes. make sure the wheel is off the ground so no weight is on the spring. Take the top bolts out and it may take some whacks with a rubber hammer.

I have sent Marvin a handfull of Emails trying to get what I need, but I will just buy my own and use Grade 8 Hardware.

Thanks

You can download the installation instructions from the 4xg website.... it has a parts list on the first page.

superacerc
11-07-2011, 01:05 PM
Just curious. Did you use an actual angle grinder wheel or the steel wool pads? If you had the steel wool pads i think there wouldn't be any rust left on these whatsoever after about 20 mins.

Sal-XK
11-07-2011, 01:26 PM
you have to get all the rust off. Any rust left on will bleed threw and continue to rust the steel. I don't particularly trust the claims some companies make that you can spray there product on rust and it will seal and stop it. I know your considering the money you purchased these for but remember what a new set costs so as long as you come in cheaper your in good shape.

Holaday07 4.7
11-07-2011, 01:53 PM
Used the Angle Grinder, **** was brutal to get off,the rust was thick. The pics are taken in my basement with my Blackberry, so they are not great. Almost all of it is off, and I am still going to get the Steel wool pads to get any left overs. They are starting to come through though. Matt, it shows part number and size, but not lengths of the bolts or Screws, I guess I will just wing it.

Sal, I agree. I want them bare metal before they are painted, I will try and get better pics, but they are darn close.

Ordered a new front suspension skid today since the other one was too bent to get back on. Hopefully the old lady gets me my Belly Guard for xmas. Going out on NYD with the Midwest Jeep Thing to The Ranch and running the hard trails this time. Should be interesting, as the Mild/Med. trails were no walk in the park due to ground clearance.

Sal-XK
12-08-2011, 02:06 PM
I would wait to run those trails which is easy for me to sit here and say with my crunched up rocker panel LOL But the difference in wheeling with full protection is nice. The belly guard is essential for wheeling the hard trails mine is pretty beat up and I know a few others have there's bent up as well. My demolished running boards saved me from tons of damage which was obvious because the first time I wheeled without them I smashed my rocker in LOL. It's been hard to keep the XK off the trails until the sliders are on but I've done it and my SA sliders should be here soon.

I installed my 4xguard belly guard the day I got to Rausch Creek right in the parking lot. After a day and a half of wheeling (blew my t-case) the belly guard was bent up pretty good. Took a big hit right where the two plates bolt together :( Nothing a BFH cant straighten out.

Holaday07 4.7
12-08-2011, 03:06 PM
I have survived the 3s and some 4s so far without it, so I will probably roll the dice again if i dont get it, lol. I am stoked to have the side guards, but the Belly Guard will finally give me piece of mind. (my cats and exhaust is already all dented up)

I should have my new HD video camera by then too, so hopefully i will get some good shots of the action.

Once you get that belly guard and your completely protected your going to love the new feeling of freedom you will have. To wheel knowing your fully protected underneath is so nice. Caution this will make you want to try lots of obstacles you would normally pass up LOL and find yourself in some awesome sticky situations hahaha

Thats the Idea!

I think the fuel tank is the only real weak point after that. Mine holds about 1/2 gallon less than normal after the last trip. I cant imagine what it would look like without a skid. Hopefully no damage this time out

The upper diff bushing is easy. Jack up front end and put on jack stands so the tires are off the ground. Disconnect the front drive shaft from front diff. Take out the two bolts that hold the front diff cover bracket to the front crossmember. Take the other two bolts out that hold in the front diff (one is located above the diff and the other on the passenger side of the housing that come out the side of the differential. Rotate the entire front differential upside down. Press out old bushing and press in new one. Then reverse order to put it back together

Decided to keep the XK for the wife. I will eventually trade my Altima in for a 1/2 ton truck. Just dont do enough towing to justify the big rig.

Updates on some of my junk:

tore appart the TJ and replaced all the steel armor with Aluminum

and finally got it back on the road

Still using the XK as a tow rig

And now that the TJ is done, I can get more done to the XK. Front springs have really started to sag, and the new tires rub

Looks like you need to install the OME lift in your XK!!

Thanks Guys!

Between the new 255.75.17s (which measure almost 33 inches mounted) and the front end sag I cant wheel the XK at all. Hell I can barely take it off a curb too fast and it gets into everything.

Can I just run the OME front springs?or do I need to get their struts too? I think the rear is fine as well, and I am putting in air bags for when I tow with it.

Appreciate any advice

You can run just the springs. their struts are the same size as stock. Though if you have your original front struts, you may want to swap them out anyway.

Swapped them out less than 2 years ago. might be worth it though if the front end is already appart

What 255/75R17 tires do you have that measure 33 inches? A 255/75R17 is 32 inches tall

Kenda Klever M/Ts. I have to admit I was a little shocked to say the least.

Traded in the Commander yesterday for this.

It was an awesome Jeep but we just needed to be able to tow more. The trans was starting to slip and the dash never recovered from my wife leaving the sunroof open during a huge rainstorm. Thanks for all the help over the past couple years!

Hope so. My wife cried when we traded in the Commander though. Wish we could have kept it too

Thats what im hoping to be able to do in a few more years. Definitely need a vehicle with more room. But we have our XK and old beater accord payed off already. Once at least one of the kids are done with daycare im hoping we can add a burb or yukon xl to the lineup.

The trans and water damage problems kind of forced our hand on this one. We were going to get the Yukon XL, but they gave us a hell of a deal. I think the dealer wanted it off the VW lot. I still drive an Altima with 200k on her. Happy wife happy life I hear

No lift. Putting 285 45 22 all terrains on it though. Not sure that counts though

No pinch weld and body modifications with a heat gun.
