Love the look of those wheels.....Nice ride!!
Thanks!
And yup.... got the Matrix and front skid from ER Nurse. He's shipping them out tomorrow morning. :)
Just need to fab up a way to mount my Rallye4000 lights on there now. I have a few ideas but really need to see the Matrix in person to figure out the spacing/connections. The lights have a 9" outer diameter so they may not fit on the standard mounts on either side of the hoop.

Damn man Doing big things up there! How much did you get the matrix and front guard for?
Lets just say that ER NURSE gave me a good deal that I didn't want to pass up :) (even though i spent too much combined with the skid plates just now because i have a rule against putting "mods" on plastic... i bent the rules this time and will just pay it off in 2 months)
Putting the skids on tomorrow and the Matrix / front guard should be here Monday so I'll get that stuff on the following weekend. Then just need to find a way to mount those 9" lights on there and i'll be set!

Cool another Jersey dude!Looks sweet! Once I get my skid from 4xguard I'd like to head up to Rausch and hit a few blues and maybe a green here and there some time this summer ! I'm running stock size tires now,so I'll need the skid..
I'd love to check out those sliders you have... see a set in person. You have the OEM skids already?
I think im going to take a trip to the pines either Sunday or Monday of Memorial Day weekend if you're up for it.

Dont know about next week..I have the tank skid from the factory that's it though. The slider are real nice and solid. I havent had a chance to use them yet xcept on the snowbanks..I put them on before the winter and their showing no hint of rusting.
Does your tank skid have the threaded holes to mount the tcase skid? If not, its very thin sheet metal and won't work well as a skid plate .
Check out whats going on this weekend!!! 2nd shot is just to give an idea of the size of the lights... they're 9" OD.

Yea you'll have to do some modding to get them to fit. Mine just fit and I think their 6"? Will look awesome though!!
Frank
Yeah I definitely realized that when i looked at the Matrix in person. I decided that i'm just going to make a light bar out of one of my left over Thule load bars and mount that to the Matrix. Or something similar... not sure. Will have to see how it works out once i put it together.
Another option im considering is not using the grill hoop and just mounting the lights directly to the Matrix... but, I was also thinking about using the hoop to make a hi-lift mount as well. Decisions decisions!
06blkhemi
05-24-2011, 08:23 PM
Definitely for the two top lights, just make a bracket to extend the light mounts away from the hoop.. I'm jealous you got the front skid from 4xguard also! Looks like a nice piece too..
Quick update and some teaser pics.
NO, the lights are not mounted yet. I'm going to put the lights on a Thule load bar that i'll cut to length. Then i plan on mounting the load bar above the Matrix at about the same height as the light tabs.

The only problem that I can see might happen. Is your going to overheat, especially in the woods wheeling with the radiator being covered from the lights..If it can't suck cold air through it.. Something to think about... Besides that it looks awesome! Do any wheeling over the Memorial day weekend?
lol thanks. That body has its fair share of beauty marks though... just the magical thing about white vehicles, they always look clean in pictures. It's actually dirty as all hell right now.
And i broke a tab on the top corner of the bumper putting it back on too. Still held in place alright, especially with the front guard on there which adds support to the bottom.

The lights are going to be off of the front of the Matrix which puts plenty of space between them and the grill. With the E-Fans, there won't be any issues pulling air through since the lights will be too far away to restrict flow created from the suction of the fan.
Didn't get a chance to wheel over the weekend. Went crazy with house work.

Rock rails installed: click here for thread (http://www.theultimatejeep.com/showthread.php/1150-Matts-rock-rail-install)
... the ONLY thing i wish i had now is a more aggressive set of tires. Don't get me wrong, the AT2's are awesome... but when we got them my wife was using the Xk as her DD so we kept the size slightly smaller and went with an AT tread instead of MT. Now that it's my DD (much shorter commute), and that i've taken it over as my "hobby" (i always have a car im working on), i wish I would've went with something like the Duratrac, ATZ or even the KM2...
Got some parts in today. Now i just have to wait (im)patiently for my front OME springs/struts. Then no more sagging!!

Wow man, I am extremely envious of that setup. You are taking a very calculated, and precise approach to your build. I really like it, and thank you for sharing

I've been modifying vehicles for a long time.. so i know the pain of "wishing i would have done something different" all too well. Those are nice, the wedding eats all my extra funds though. Yeah in Hind sight, I would have gotten QDII and probably switched a couple things around. This is my first build that was more than just big with mud tires, and I am seeing now how much more thought goes into it.

Unfortunately, it's getting harder and harder to wheel around here. Was reading a thread on the Grass Roots forum about a guy getting ticketed $1000 for trespassing, but he was on a legal road! He's fighting it, and will win... but it just puts in perspective how bad it's gotten around here. :(
I'm afraid me next real offroad adventure is going to be RC in January..

Great looking shot sir
Since this is somewhat of a PITA and has also left my interior a mess after a few muddy rides (although i try to avoid riding when its muddy):
https://theultimatejeep.com/notfound.png
.... and because that's not going to work when both my wife and I go riding unless i take out the car seats..... I just ordered the Yakima Blockheads to mount on my roof rack. It'll work perfect up there. And i'd rather throw a step stool in the back than two bikes!

https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2011/12/20111211112150-1.jpg
Also, went to mcmaster to get some strut spring nuts for easy installation.
https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2011/12/channelnut-1.jpg
I got 1/4-20 for the bike mounts but also ordered a box of 3/8-16 because i'm going to get some eye bolts and make moveable tie-down points like this:
https://theultimatejeep.com/images/imported/2011/12/0416100852a-1.jpg
^I'll put one eye bolt on the center cross rail, under where the frame of the bike is. Then i'll just use a lashing strap to secure the bike. Technically the fork mount will be enough; but the lashing strap will really secure it by making the back tire grip the rails and not want to bounce up or slide to the side.

I've got two fork mount racks on my roof too. I love them. I was in the same boat having to load it in the back, and hated doing it when my bike was all mud. Its a bit easier for me with no lift to get them up there though lol.
Got the main parts today and threw them on. Only thing I dont like about the Yakima fork mounts is they dont tighten up without something in there.... so I used one of the leftover spacers from my roof rack install to "lock" it in place when there's no bike.
Install took me all of 5 minutes. I LOVE this strut channel roof rack!!
Will need to take pics with the bike up there this weekend.... and get a 15mm thru axle adapter for my wifes bike..

Everything looks great man! Looks like you have a Gary Fisher MTB - I loved mine til it was stolen. Can I bother to ask how you have the Rola installed on the roof - looks low profile and I have been racking my head on how to get it off of the factory roof rails and lower profile. I only carry my spare plus a hi-jack lift up there. Is that uni-strut you are using? how is it attached to the lateral rails?
That is a Gary Fisher.... x-caliber. I love it.... lol although the only thing still stock is the frame, seatpost and handlebars (see a trend???)
I am using strut channel for my load bars and I machined stanchions for them. Anything I've done to my XK has a link associated with it in the first post of this thread... so if you're ever looking for this link again all you have to do is find my garage thread (hint, links in my sig)
This is a long thread, but it shows how/why the mounts look like they do:

Wow that is one heck of a job you did. That is the look I have been trying to get with the Rola and I don't feel so bad now that I could not figure out an elegant solution - but at the time and effort and esp cost I would have to pay to get the parts machined (I don't have those types of tools) I might just be better off buying the Defender roof rack (which is as wide as and mounts directly in the factory channels). The extra few inches lower that you created with your set up doesn't seem like much but I bet it make a HUGE difference in keeping the center of gravity low (esp with a spare tire on top) and wind drag. Looks great man.
Thanks man. :)
Take a look at Sal and Dans setup.... they used bolts and spacers to essentially do the same thing. Also, a new member copied my setup with an easier to make solution. .. ill see if I can find that thread for you.
I have a feeling that a commercial version of my setup (but much nicer) may be coming in the relative near future.... so you may want to go with one of those lower cost interim solutions for the time being.
I do have some material left over too.... so if you want me to machine some for you, shoot me a PM. I'm taking some time off during the holidays so I can set a day aside to machine a set (only reason I haven't been making a bunch of these to sell is because of the time it takes.... lol cleanup alone takes well over an hour.. but the garage looks awesome with metal shavings all over the place!)

I saw that Sal in one of the links Matt had provided. Got me thinking about the best way to do this for now.
Just so you know, I made these mounts as low as possible keeping two things in mind:
1) Clearing the satellite antenna
2) Getting S-hooks from ratchet straps, etc under them.
When measured at the centerline of the roof:
The bottom of my load bar is 7/8" above the roof
The bottom of my load bar is 3/16" above the antenna
The bottom of my Rola cross rail is 1-5/8" above the roof (so you have basically 1.5" to squeeze your arm under there to wash the roof, pass straps, etc)
If I was just using a 2-bar system and didn't need to clear the antenna, I could probably drop it down 1/2" lower.... but it's so low as it is, im not sure it would really make any difference at this point...

Looks sick Matt.
Well I took my rear storage compartment apart today to see how i could increase the space.... I decided not to mess with it (BUT if i didn't have/use the rear HVAC, i definitely would have). Because of the HVAC tube there really wasn't a whole lot of added space to be had so it wasn't worth it to me to make brackets to hold the HVAC tube in place and the cover on.
Plus, i can fit everything I need in there now:
Stock jack equipment
Collapsible tire iron
Work gloves
Night safety equipment (reflective triangle & glow sticks)
Ponchos
Ratchet straps
Recovery strap
So... I'll go with what i got :)

For Christmas I got a Midland 75-822 CB. I really like this thing for offroading.... the car connection for it runs power off cigarette lighter and (more importantly) connects to an external antenna for extended range. The reason I like this is because it also comes with a battery pack; so if you're wheeling and need to get out of the vehicle but still want to communicate (say its raining and you're helping spot someone), you just put on the shorty antenna and quick connect the battery pack, then you're using it as an all inclusive handheld

I kinda like that mounting spot. I put mine up high. Its over 8ft up which creates problems getting in a parking garage. I dont want to grind the top off against the concrete.LOL. I guess I could get a quick disconnect, not sure how good they work.
Thanks. I'll probably keep mine inside and just put it on when going offroad... but at the same time I didn't want it much taller than my roof line so it doesn't scrape branches and other overhangs.
Finished it up. As a reminder I have the Midland CB that plugs into the outlet and has the option for connecting an exterior antenna.
I used Velcro to hold the end up to the center console... simply peel off and plug in. :)

You have to re-tune your antenna again....

Blue! Just make sure it's the tunable one and not the one you trim to tune.
That's one of the reasons i want to get a new one... get a tuneable one to set it up properly. The one i have now is a trim-to-tune that's already been cut.. and it's pretty beat up.

I'm confused are you getting a cover or are you getting a guard? You'll def have to hammer that lip down to fit the guard on. Because as I see it now, it will not fit with that lip bent like that. But, obviously if ya get the cover, you are good. Does the Guard also fit over the cover???
I'm getting the guard. Going to fix the cover today (i have to hammer down that lip regardless to get it to seal again).
Edit: but hammering it down is just a temp fix since theres a leak path which means the RTV seal is compromised. so this weekend i'll pull the cover off and redo the seal, and install the guard as well.
Guard came in yesterday. Ill paint it tonight and probably install it. Friday. :)

I like that Matt! It's different than most people.
Question, on your Monroe shocks, has that rubber sleeve slid back down again or is it holding up pretty good? I gotta fix mine and want to do it similiar to yours.
My gorilla glue + 2 wraps of electrical tape did the trick.... they haven't budged.

Now you have to color match the shackle bolt with the diff guard.
I actually have blue shackle guards on the way... figure i'll leave the bolts red for the red/white/blue theme (though i want to keep red accessories to a minimum and make my vehicle primarily white/blue)

I'm pretty sure I already said it before, but i really like the way you have the lights set up, up front.
Put my USA firstik on yesterday. Also tried tuning it... my SWR was around 2.5 on the lower channels and a little over 3 on the higher channels.... not great, but I couldn't get it any lower. I probably need to redo my termination point since I didn't have the proper splicer (or maybe I used nonconductive solder... hmm just thought of that....)

Ya about 20 minutes after I posted I rememberd you had the load levellers on the rear. Im thinking about taking off the rear inner fender well liners. I wonder how many members have done that. All they really do is stop mud/dirt from getting everywhere but there point less to me because when I go mud bogging mud get everywhere anyways.

I am very ambitious looking for a used OME lift............
Matt/Adam....how much of a difference is the ride with the OME compared to RC? I know the offroad capability is much improved if im not mistaken?
It firms up the ride.... which is a matter of opinion whether that means "better" or not since some like the smooth ride of the factory suspension. While I enjoy a smooth on road ride, the firmness of the OME doesn't bother me one bit.
Off-road it helps because the spring/shock combo doesn't compress as much when you drive off a rock or ledge which comes in handy due to our limited ground clearance.
Going to start taking the powdercoat off the rro arms tonight.

Yeah I remember you guys talking about it yesterday. I will 100% switch to OME towards the end of next year. A few of my buddies who have wranglers keep yelling at me for having a spacer lift LOL "It's going to wear out your entire suspension" is what they say
Your spacer lift wont wear out anything any quicker than the OME will. Spacers that add preload to the stock springs tend to wear the springs out quicker, but that's a different type of lift (probably the issue Andrew had)

Yeah that makes sense and I guess it really depends on how much off-roading your actually doing. I seen that the OME Andrew bought came w/ rear shocks. Did you decide on the load levelers above those OME shocks?
Yes, only because I wanted to lift the rear a bit more and the load levellers accomplish that, for the price of 1 OME shock too. But I can make some spacers that will work too so we don't have to rely on helper springs and can run any shock we want.
