That's actually why i went with TIME. Both TIME and CB are better in muddy/slushy conditions. I started on SPD's and they'd have issues when they get clogged up. I like the "firm" feel of TIME over the floaty feel of CB (but that's a personal thing... my buddy likes CB for the opposite reason, he likes having some side-to-side play in the pedal)
Picked up a bike for my wife last night... found an awesome deal, $550 for a 2011 Giant Talon 29er-1 (bike sells for $900+ at LBS, so almost $1k after tax).

.... and these are the pedals she uses (TIME ATAC Z); well, "used to use"... she hasn't ridden in ~ 2+ years because of the kids. But they'll be going back on this bike for her first ride

Nice score bro, awesome price on that.
Thanks!! I just cleaned it all up and gave it a good tune-up. Previous owner had the rear derailleur tension all wrong ;)

going to get her "stocking stuffers" this xmas with parts to go 1x9. Just need to decide how I want to go about it.... I'm running an MRP x1 and a SS chainring, but I think she may need some bash protection (especially being a small sized 29er). I've done the bash guard + N-gear jumpstop... but have had issues with the jumpstop not doing the job on really bumpy stuff. So im thinking of one of those chainrings that have inner & outer guards...
Ok this is how I read all that https://theultimatejeep.com/notfound.png
LMAO... guess that was a different language for you huh Sal?
hahahaha. Basically what I said was I want to take the gears off the front of the bike. You know how bikes have 3 rings in the front and 9 rings in the rear for a 27 speed bike? (or 8 in the rear for a 24 spd bike). Well, no one actually uses that "big" chainring offroad and it actually gets in the way when trying to clear obstacles. And unless you live in the mountains you don't need that "small" chainring (likes like a low gear in 4x4 low in the tcase).
There's a few different options for taking those gears off and still retaining the chain.
Here's what I have on my bike:

... and im debating what route I want to go with the wifes bike.
Here's what my bike used to have... a bashguard on the outside (the white piece) and a chainkeeper on the inside (that little metal thin mounted to the frame).

^ I didn't like that very much though... that piece on the inside was a bit too flimsy and my chain would still come off once in a while.
Thanks for dumbing it down for me https://theultimatejeep.com/notfound.png I never got into the mountain bike thing I was in the BMX crowd :) I have two mountain bikes now I bought used but I'm pretty sure they were walmart specials or something LOL
Weighed my mountain bike today... 25.26 lbs!! Not bad for a medium sized 29er https://theultimatejeep.com/notfound.png (Sal, anything under 25lbs is really really really good for a mtb. 27-29lb is common for quality bikes)
https://theultimatejeep.com/notfound.png
Also threw my wifes new bike on the scale... 31.28 lbs https://theultimatejeep.com/notfound.png ... Going to have to cut some weight on that thing, ouch!
https://theultimatejeep.com/notfound.png
My bikes feel light I'll have to weight them and see now. I think one of the is a diamond back or something like that.
mine is 33LBS so I guess that's heavy then?
Diamondback? I'd guess 34-35lb
Edit: na, sounds about right for the bike :)
Mine should be around the 25lb mark as well, but I have no way of weighing it.
$12 scale from amazon prime :D
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...00_i00_details
I just weigh my self then pick the bike up and do the math.
I used to do that too, but bathroom scales are usually only accurate to 1/2 lb. For example my bike weighed 25.5 using that method and so I wasn't sure if it was actually 25.6-25.7.
Now knowing that I'm 25.26, I can conceivably get to the 24.xx lb mark. (Its Just another hobby lol). Whereas if I was in the 25.6-25.7 lb range that's a lot harder to get below 25 ($$$$) and I wouldn't even think about it.
Dropped .88 lbs on my wifes bike last night when I installed her xmas gifts. We put on new grips, bottle cage, chainring, Inner/Outer bash rings and removed the front gears for a 1x9 setup.
She started at 31.28 lb and is now down to 30.40. We'll be dropping another ~1.5 lb when I install her new (used off ebay) marz 44 micro ti fork :)

..... oh and my son made me weigh his tractor afterwards! lol it was a whopping 9.44 lb with some of his tools under the seat

^^^^^^^^LOL......
I still cant believe that Giant weighs that much, holy crap dude.
I will do the Sal weight method tonight. I know I know, $12...........<---thats almost a box of ammo. Lol...
I'm getting her a tubeless kit.... that may just get us to the 29.xx range lol
Took the beast out today after work, it was a nice ride and workout. My buddy brought out my old mtb that I gave him a while back, it's still going strong. I baught it new back in '94ish and he will not give it back....LOL.

I did the "Sal Weight Method" tonight and have come to two conclusions.....
One......I'm a fatass (thanks SAL).
B..........My bike is also a fatass, needs some weight management. 28lbs current
So, I'm enlisting the help of Matt, if he likes it or not. =P
I need some lighter, grippier, great value tires w/tubeless kit.
Also, anything else to lighten it up a bit.
If you can provide some info on where to "Best" buy these items, I would appretiate the help, bro.
Also Mr. Matt, I want to go to single gear up front like you have done since I don't ever change from 2nd. What do you recomend that is lightweight and affordable?
I just ordered the Stans No Tubes 29er conversion kit for $60 from Amazon today (free 2 day shipping).
Next thing, if you don't use them, convert to 1x9. Easy weight reduction, more ground clearance.
Depending how much you want to spend... might want to look into a SLX or XT crankset. The external bearings really stiffen up the crank (which is good, less flex when you hammer down) and it cuts a lot of weight by eliminating that cartridge bb.
Id have to look up the specs, but from there you're probably looking at a lighter stem & bars; these are normally "boat anchors" on good, but affordable bikes.
Just saw that last post.... what kinda budget you looking at?
Well 1x9 isn't a brand... its a method. The best way to do it IMO is to get a crank (shimano slx or xt), singlespeed chainring (surly or blackspire mono veloce), and MRP x1 chainguide.
....but that'll be a bit pricey. So you can do like I did on my wife's bike (and like I had mine setup till I needed a new crankset ):
singlespeed chainring (blackspire)
bashguard (and bolts)
BBG inner bashguard
This is the crankset that I have........----> SR Suntour, 22/32/42 teeth
How many teeth are you running?
Its probably the Suntour XCT...
If you can swing it... do what I did. Get the slx and sell the chainrings from the new crank on eBay. Pretty sure I got about $80 for mine.
Chainring: http://www.bikebling.com/Blackspire-...-chainring.htm
(which one was on amazon?)
Edit: Found it for $25 here:

Truvativ bashguard for $30 (32T, 104-4bolt): http://www.pricepoint.com/detail/201...Guard-2011.htm
And the BBG inner ring: http://www.bbgbashguard.com/Mountainbike.html (64 BCD, 32T Superlight)
$25...... even better.
