What does the 8.25 stand for?

So driving into work today I had a brainwave.... what the heck does the 8.25 stand for when referring to Chrysler 8.25? Or a Ford 8.8?

Random question I know, and probably a noob question but I couldn't figure it out.

Its the diameter of the ring gear.
