Q: What lifts are available for the 2006-2010 Jeep Commander?

A: The following lifts are available ranging from a 1/4" Front Leveling Spacer to a 4.5" Suspension Lift.

Q: Do I need extended shocks to run a 2 inch Spacer Lift?

A: No, you do not need extended shocks, but many will recommend spending the extra money for them. The only downfall with using stock shocks is that you will be limited on the the down travel of the rear suspension. However, due to your rear sway bar end links being connected, your only going to get some much down travel regardless.





Q: Does anyone make sway bar quick disconnects for the Jeep Commander?

A: Yes, JKS makes a Quick Disconnect, JKS part #2001, that can be used for the rear of the Commander. Refer to the "sticky" in the Suspension / Tire section for installation insturctions.







Q: What is a Wheel Spacer?

A: A wheel spacer allows you to use an oversize tire and/or expand the distance between wheels on the same axle while using your existing wheels.

A: A wheel adapter changes the bolt pattern of your vehicle's hub and moves the wheel out allowing you to use custom wheels for your vehicle.

Q: How do I determine the actual height and width of a tire?

Q: How do I read my tire size, and what do the numbers mean?

A: When reading tires, there is a few things you need to know. Ill start out by talking about the stock tire size which is 245/65R17.
The first number is how wide the tire is in Milimeters. The stock tire is 245mm wide which is equivalent to 9.6 inches. Just for future reference, for ever 10mm you are looking at approx .3937 inches wider.
The second number is the percentage of the width that makes up the side wall of the tire. So 65% of the 245mm width is how tall the side wall of the tire is. That comes out to be approx 6.2 inches. Now if you take that 6.2 inches and multiply it by 2 (since you have side wall both above an below the wheel) and then add the size of the wheel, 17 inches you get 29.4 which is the approx size of the tire.
The last number is the wheel size. Stock wheels and the Commander are 17 inches.

Now if you are looking at a tire that is 33x12.5R17 it is a little different.
The first number is how tall the tire is. In this case it would be 33 inches tall.
The second number is the width of the tire which is 12.5 inches wide.
The last number stays the same and still represents the size of the wheel which is 17 inches.





Available Tire Sizes from Stock to 4.5" Suspension Lifts


Tire sizes on the Jeep Commander are limited due to rubbing on the upper control arm ball joint bolt and the rear portion of the plastic fender well. Depending on the size tire, wheel spacers may be needed to clear the ball joint bolt. Depending on the height of the tire, the rear portion of the fender well plastic might need trimming and bending over the pinch weld might be required.


Stock Jeep Commanders or Commanders using the 1/4" leveling spacer can fit the following tire sizes WITHOUT wheel spacers and no rubbing:

245/65R17 (Stock Tire Size)

Jeep Commanders with 4" of lift or more can fit the following tires WITH the proper back spaced wheel and have minor rubbing. Trimming will be required. New wheel with maximum of 5.5" of Back Spacing is required or a 1" wheels spacer for installation.

*Any tire larger than that size will need additional lift and major cutting/trimming of the fender well/fender flares/pinch weld.




Q: What is wheel back spacing and how does it effect my Commander?

A: Backspacing is simply the distance from the back of the mounting pad to the back lip of the wheel. It is measured by laying the wheel on its face, placing a straight edge across the wheel, and then measuring down to mounting face. The higher this measurement the more the wheel is pushed inboard towards the car’s centerline.

Q: What is wheel offset and how does it effect my Commander?

A: Offset is the distance from the mounting surface to the centerline of the wheel, expressed in millimeters. Positive offset means that the wheels are pushed inboard towards the centerline of the car like a car with front wheel drive. Negative means that the wheels are moved outboard towards the fenders, widening the track

Q: What is the smallest size wheel that will fit on my Jeep Commander?

A: The smallest size wheel that will fit on the Jeep Commander is the stock size, which is a 17" Wheel. The 16" wheels won't clear the front brake calipers. Some 17" wheels will require at least a custom 1" wheel spacer to clear the brake caliper due to the design. The 17" JK Rubicon wheel is one of them.




Q: What is the bolt pattern of my stock wheels?

A: The Jeep Commander wheel bolt pattern is 5 on 5. It shares the same bolt pattern as the JK Wrangler and the WJ Grand Cherokee. So make sure when ordering wheels or spacers that you get the correct bolt pattern.




Q: What is the width and back spacing of the stock Commander wheels?

A: The stock wheel is a 17x7.5 and has 6" of back spacing.




Q: What size wheels other then stock can I run on my Commander?

A: When looking for new wheels you will see that they come in a variety of different sizes and widths ranging from 17x7.5 to 17x9 and so on to include bigger wheels such as 18", 19", 20" etc. You can fit larger wheels on the commander as long as they have the proper back spacing and bolt pattern. You will just have to get a tire size that would be equivalent to the stock tire size that comes on the Commander.
