You guys have me dying today while I am at the office, by laughing so much; the people in my office thinks I'm nuts.

I hate to be the one to try to pull this thread back on topic but...
I recently wanted to find something for varmints around my place. Then it got me thinking about something for home defense as well. Unfortunately nothing fits both. So I was looking at a Gano air rifle for the varmints and a shotgun for the house, probably pump action. I'd consider a pistol but from what I've read and know about myself even with training if I was woke up by a burglar I would have a better chance of actually hitting them with the shotgun.
I haven't handled a gun in about 15 years and even then I was a kid shooting my uncles guns. He was cool. He had a great collection and a range at home with his own homemade targets.
For the untrained or people without a steady hand or good eye sight the shotgun is perfect. The noise alone even if you miss will get people moving away form you.
Honestly... for someone who isn't going to use the gun once in a while (even a shotgun), I think you'd be better off with a .45 loaded with blanks. Someone breaks into your home and comes remotely close to you, scream at the top of your lungs "IM GONNA KILL YOU *******" and just start unloading those blanks. Bet ya the thief jumps through a window to get out of there...
