The gun owner told the neighbor it would never happen.... then proceeded to place a sign in his front yard that simple said:
"The owner of this house is well armed and trained... My neighbor on the other hand is against weapons of any kind and has a nice TV --->"

As for preventive measures, I don't have an alarm, but I do have a noisy, black, 110lb lab/rotty/newfie mix. She barks before anyone even has a chance to ring the bell. My friends know this and therefore do not ring, they just weight for me to answer. When the doorbell does ring, I know it's a stranger. Also, the dog leaving her half eaten cattle thigh bone outside the backdoor is probably a good deterrent for anyone approaching from the rear.

Sounds just like my uncle's house, the dog will start barking as soon as you pull into the driveway. They also have a Rotty/ Lab mix that is trained to attack in German. My cousin braught her back as a pup from his first tour in Iraq.

I think you guys are definitely taking the right steps to ensure ur kids don't get a hold of firearms. It has always been my primary concern, and it is one of the few reasons why I don't own a gun. My grandfather took advantage of my quick reflexes when I was in HS and enrolled me in a number of self-defense and hand-to-hand combat courses. Mostly mixed martial arts. But most of what I know is only defensive counter attacks. When I was at Duke for a couple semesters, a guy pretty much taught me everything I know about shooting a bow and arrow. When I got back to Raleigh, I bought a compound bow - and kept up with my targeting.

nothing nerdy about those things! The training for mix martial arts is agonizing. And I'd give props to anyone who can work a 60-75lb draw weight on a bow and hold it.
