It depends on more than just BS... width is just as important.
For example I have 4.5" backspace on my wheels- but they're 8" wide. And they still rub with my 245/75/17s. So if i wanted to go with a 9" wide wheel I would need 5.5" backspace to have the same clearance as i currently do. A 9" wide wheel with my current 4.5" backspace would cause major rubbing (though if i get ride of my rear HVAC lines it might be manageable....)
Edit: Summary = NO, 5.5" backspace isn't required. You can go with 5" or 4.5" backspace as long as the wheel width decreases as welll to allow sufficient clearance based on the particular tire diameter/width.
