Edit: Summary = NO, 5.5" backspace isn't required. You can go with 5" or 4.5" backspace as long as the wheel width decreases as welll to allow sufficient clearance based on the particular tire diameter/width.

The ZX, in 17", is 9" wide and comes with either a 0mm offset (5" BS) or -12mm offset (4.5" BS).

So what this means is that the ZX is 1.5 inches wider and has one less inch of backspace.
And if I understand correctly that will put the outside edge of the rim 1/2 further out than stock?

No that means they'll stick out 2.5" further than stock. (I made that excel sheet you can download... its a sticky in the wheel/tire forum right?)
