What did YOU do this last Memorial Day?

Mike and I went on a day trip to Wahluke Slope. We were hoping for wild flowers to take photos of, but... A) the flowers were few and far between, and B) the wind was blowing at 27 MPH (we measured it) which destroys macro shots.

Before heading up Wahluke, we headed south into White Bluffs instead.

A stop at the old cabin was in order.

An info plaque in front of it.

And I love this antique sign. There is no Atomic Energy Commission anymore, now it's the D.O.E. This sign itself is an antique.

A few macro shots at a huge catalpa tree near the cabin.

    Almost on top of Wahluke.

One of our radio sites on top.

Looking down into White Bluffs where we were a couple hours earlier.

Sitting on top. It's kind of funny being here to play instead of working on radio stuff.

    Looking north from the top.

Some reeds along Crab Creek. How'd we get here? We found an old road that switch-backed down the 2,500' or so of Wahluke's north side. It was a rough road, much like the mule trail stuff in Colorado! FUN!!

We headed west along the creek, then made a stop at Beverly Dunes.

The wife and I drove to Payson to pick up a jacket for a friend. Since it was a bomber jacket belonging to a Vet it was a good use of the holiday!

Man we didnt do anything nearly as cool as that!! Our weekend consisted of hanging around the house and getting some much needed work done. I removed my 4XG Matrix, hooked up the wagon to my sons Jeep Hurricane so he could pull it around the yard, got some other housework done, had some friends over and a little bonfire, yadda yadda yadda. All in all, a productive weekend.

On memorial day I mourn. This is for remembering not all of us who have made it back but this is the day to remember and honor all of those who have not. I don't mean to bring anybody sadness or anything but this year was kinda rough. I just want everyone to remember this is the day to honor the fallen not those of us who have made it back.

    Well put man.

I always watch "Taking Chance" at least one evening on memorial day weekend... it really brings you back to reality about whats important.

    Lightbulb

We always got to the Veteran's Remembrance at a local cemetery each year. The Boy Scouts and the VFW are part of the procession back to the Veteran's section of the cemetery. A local high school band & chorus play and sing patriotic music, a couple of politicians make BRIEF speeches , and then a local veteran gives the main address - usually a RECENTLY retired vet whose been in Afghanistan or Iraq - at least in my experience here the past 6 years.

My pictures from THIS year are on my computer that died, but heres some from a few years ago, with my oldest. He has Autism, so you'll have to forgive his slightly unorthodox 'parade rest,' but here we are AFTER the festivities. The Scouts anf VFW always stop at this man's grave on the way TO the ceremony, and they conduct a special tribute to him. You'll know why, when you see his marker.
