    Yes. It was hard to do the first time. Grab the little chrome ring just below the knob and it turns one way or another. It is pretty tight , just try it back and forth. Once it screws loose the knob just comes right off.

    Yes, the chrome ring is like a binder on a fishing rod. When the knob is installed, a twist tightens a set of binding fingers inside which grip the end of the shifter rod. When it's turned one way or the other, the fingers loosen up, and the knob gets loose enough to remove.
