Bringing this back up.... For some reason my SWR's are still in the high 2's (2.7ish) which is OK, but indicates there's a deficiency somewhere. My cable is properly terminated, is 18ft long, my mount is grounded, but I think I have insufficient ground plane still. I'm mounted off the front bumper and am running a ground wire directly to the frame rail. Everything checks out with the ohmmeter.
I'm thinking that, for whatever reason, the hood isn't acting as a good ground plane. Thinking of changing over to a NGP cable & antenna. Thoughts?
Does it have a tunable tip? Would that bring the SWRs down? I have firestik's NGP mount and antenna and have had no issues. My SWR reading is about 1.5.

Tuning equalizes the SWR between all of the channels. Like if the SWR is high on the high channels and lower and the low channels you would tune the antenna to even it out. I'm above 2.4 for all channels so tuning won't really help here.
I'm thinking NGP setup is needed for my mounting location.
I'm having the exact same issues with mine and makes no sense to me either. NGP might be worth looking into for sure.
....but i like my stars&stripes antenna lol
As long as im not the only one having the issue.
